An epidemiological study of terbinafine (TBF)-resistant dermatophytes was conducted in 2023 as a follow-up to our 2020 and 2022 surveys. Dermatophytes were isolated in 2023 from the same dermatology clinics in Tokyo, Saitama, Shizuoka, and Kumamoto, Japan, as in the previous studies. In total, 311 isolates (122 Trichophyton interdigitale isolates, 1 Trichophyton indotineae isolate, and 188 Trichophyton rubrum isolates) were obtained from 311 human cases of dermatophytosis (195 tinea pedis cases, 54 tinea unguium cases, 28 tinea corporis cases, 27 tinea cruris cases, and 7 tinea manuum cases).

Background and objective Dermatophytosis refers to superficial skin fungal infection in humans. The laboratory diagnosis of the pathogens causing dermatophytosis is challenging. In recent years, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has emerged as an effective tool for diagnosing and identifying microorganisms. This study aimed to compare MALDI-TOF MS with conventional methods of identification to assess the existing knowledge on the diagnostic capabilities of MALDI-TOF MS for dermatophyte infections. The findings of this study have signifi

The anthropophilic dermatophyte Trichophyton interdigitale and its counterpart T. mentagrophytes are phylogenetically closely related species. In India, the most common endemic dermatophyte species belongs to the T. indotineae. The internal transcribed spacer genotype VIII within this species complex was recently renamed as T. indotineae based on its rapid emergence in India and its elevated virulence and terbinafine resistance. While humans are considered a source of T. interdigitale infection, animals are considered a source of T. mentagrophytes. For T. indotineae it is not known whether inf

Dermatophyte infections, including tinea pedis (athlete's foot), tinea corporis (ringworm), and tinea cruris (jock itch), are widespread fungal infections that significantly impact global health and quality of life. Naftifine, an allylamine antifungal agent, is noted for its potent fungicidal activity, targeting fungal cell membranes by inhibiting squalene epoxidase. Additionally, Naftifine has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, enhancing its therapeutic potential. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to comprehensively evaluate the efficacy and safety of Naftifine in tre

Background:Trichophyton indotineae terbinafine-resistant infections are emerging in healthy individuals. Luliconazole, an imidazole antifungal that is effective against skin infections, faces challenges due to low water solubility and poor skin penetration. This study aimed to formulate a luliconazole-loaded nanostructured lipid-carrier (NLC) gel in a Carbopol-based system to enhance drug absorption and efficacy in a guinea pig model of dermatophytosis. Methods: Luliconazole-loaded nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) were prepared using a solvent evaporation method and gel formulation. Skin a

Phaeohyphomycosis caused by Phialophora americana is relatively rare in clinical practice. Deficiency in the human caspase recruitment domain-containing protein 9 (CARD9) is associated with infections caused by Phialophora americana. In this case, the patient has had a decade-long history of recurrent tinea corporis and recently presented with an invasive, deep subcutaneous infection in the right axilla caused by Phialophora americana. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) confirmed that the pathogen infecting the patient was Phialophora americana. Whole exome sequencing (WES) revealed

Background Dermatophytosis has become a growing concern in India, with rising cases fueled by recurrent infections, antifungal resistance, and misuse of steroid-antifungal treatments. Beyond the physical discomfort, many patients struggle with embarrassment, depression, and a diminished quality of life (QoL). This study bridges that gap by using the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) questionnaire to assess how dermatophytosis affects patients' daily lives, while also exploring the financial strain it imposes, offering valuable insights to improve care and address the challenges these indiv

We encountered a case of familial infection of Trichophyton rubrum infection affecting five of six cohabiting family members: father, tinea pedis; mother tinea corporis; first son tinea pedis; second son tinea corporis; and third son tinea corporis. We conducted mycological culture observations from each member's lesions and performed genetic analysis of the ribosomal RNA genes of the detected T. rubrum strains using ITS-PCR-RFLP and non-transcribed spacer region analysis. Based on the results, we investigated the source and route of infection. Our findings suggest that the T. rubrum infection

Dermatophytes (ringworms) are possibly the most prevalent causes of human infection globally. At least 40 dermatophyte species infect humans. For example, onychomycosis, which is responsible for about half of abnormal nails, may: produce ridging, ingrown nails, bleeding and nail loss; make walking painful; and facilitate secondary bacterial infections. Several diseases increase the risk of onychomycosis caused by dermatophytes, including knee osteoarthritis and poorly controlled diabetes. This article focuses on nursing approaches to managing skin and nail dermatophyte infections. Topical anti

Tinea faciei caused by zoophilic dermatophytes can simulate several facial inflammatory skin conditions, such as eczema, lupus erythematosus, and cellulitis, often leading to misdiagnosis or a delayed diagnosis. A young girl around primary school age developed inflammatory, favus-like lesions on the face after the purchase of a pet rabbit. The patient had been evaluated at a local clinic where she received treatment with dexamethasone acetate cream topically twice daily for suspected eczema. Mycological examination confirmed that both the patient and her rabbit were affected by tinea corporis,

INTRODUCTION: Dermatophytosis is a chronic public health issue in India, often requiring systemic antifungals. Itraconazole (ITZ) is commonly used, but conventional forms show variable absorption. Super-bioavailable itraconazole (SUBA-ITZ) offers improved pharmacokinetics, though clinical comparisons are limited.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy, safety, relapse, and recurrence rates of three oral ITZ formulations-Conventional ITZ 100 mg (C-ITZ), SUBA-ITZ 65 mg, and SUBA-ITZ 50 mg-in superficial dermatophytosis.
METHODS: In this open-label, randomised study at a tertiary hospital, 150 pati

BACKGROUND: Trichophyton quinckeanum is a zoophilic dermatophyte causing mouse favus, that was only sporadically detected in Germany for decades. Since 2014, an increasing number of isolates have been found in central Germany, giving rise to dermatophyte skin infections and skin appendix infections like tinea capitis or even kerion Celsi.
OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to characterize the specific features of dermatophyte infections due to T. quinckeanum.
METHODS: We collected the data of 550 isolates of T. quinckeanum from Germany between March 2014 and December 2024 in the laborato
