Physical activity for psychological and physical well-being in menstruating individuals: an integrative review.

BACKGROUND: Physical and psychological symptoms vary across the menstrual cycle and may influence well-being and engagement in physical activity. While physical activity may alleviate menstrual pain, fatigue, and mood disturbances, evidence regarding beneficial types, intensities, and timing remains fragmented. This integrative review aimed to synthesise evidence on how physical activity contributes to psychological and physical well-being in menstruating individuals and to identify practically relevant recommendations. METHODS: An integrative review was conducted using a PIO-based search str

Menstruation in adolescents with familial Mediterranean fever: attack trigger or dysmenorrhoea? A prospective cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the relationship between menstruation and familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) attacks in adolescents and whether menstrual symptoms indicate true FMF flares or primary dysmenorrhoea (PD) or premenstrual syndrome (PMS). METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional study included 42 adolescents diagnosed with FMF. Patients with comorbidities, secondary dysmenorrhoea or less than 1 year post-menarche were excluded. FMF attacks were classified according to Eurofever/PRINTO criteria, and CRP was measured on the first and 15th days of attacks and menstruation. Partic

Anti-Dysmenorrhea Effects and Safety of Guizhi Fuling Capsules for Primary Dysmenorrhea: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

BACKGROUND: Primary dysmenorrhoea is common and disabling, while available treatments may be limited by incomplete response or adverse effects. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Guizhi Fuling Capsules (GZFL) for primary dysmenorrhoea. METHODS: We searched eight English- and Chinese-language databases from inception to 1 December 2025 for randomized controlled trials comparing GZFL, alone or as add-on therapy, with placebo or conventional medicines. Meta-analyses used risk ratios (RRs), odds ratios (ORs), or mean differences (MDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Risk of bias

The genetics of primary dysmenorrhoea: a systematic review.

ABSTRACT: Dysmenorrhoea is the most common gynaecological condition in women of reproductive age. Approximately 90% of cases are primary dysmenorrhoea (PDM), which is not associated with an underlying pathology. Dysmenorrhoea can have a substantial impact on quality of life, yet current therapies do not provide adequate relief to everyone. Family history (FHx) is a known risk factor that suggests genetic involvement. We therefore aimed to synthesise the literature describing the genetics of PDM. Three databases (MEDLINE, Embase and Web of Science) were searched for studies published up to Nove

Endometriosis in adolescent: a review of current diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines and expert consensus.

OBJECTIVES: Endometriosis is a widespread gynecological condition characterized by the presence of endometrial like tissue outside the uterine cavity. According to the literature, the frequency of endometriosis in adolescents remains unclear; however, studies suggest that histologically confirmed disease may be present in up to 47% of girls with chronic pelvic pain (CPP) and in nearly 70% of girls with primary dysmenorrhoea unresponsive to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or hormonal therapy. The aim of this study was to review and compare current diagnostic and therapeutic recomm

A Bioinspired Cellulosic Elastomer with Ultrahigh Robustness Enabled by Structure-Induced Reconstruction for Impact Protection.

BACKGROUND: Xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis (XGC) is an uncommon variant of chronic cholecystitis, characterized by marked thickening of the gallbladder wall and dense local adhesions. It often mimics a gallbladder carcinoma (GBC), and may coexist with GBC, leading to a diagnostic dilemma. Furthermore, the premalignant nature of this entity is not known. This study was undertaken to assess the p53, PCNA and beta-catenin expression in XGC in comparison to GBC and chronic inflammation. METHODS: Sections from paraffin-embedded blocks of surgically resected specimens of GBC (69 cases), XGC (65)

Exploring the impact of herbaceous Apiaceae family plants on primary dysmenorrhea: a systematic review protocol.

OBJECTIVES: Primary dysmenorrhea is a leading cause of job and school absenteeism among young females. Despite its high prevalence, contemporary medicine offers limited treatment options. Herbaceous members of the Apiaceae family, such as Pimpinella anisum L., Anethum sowa L., Cuminum cyminum L., and Foeniculum vulgare Mill., are commonly used in traditional medicine to treat primary dysmenorrhea. Currently, there is no comprehensive assessment of their therapeutic efficacy and safety. This study protocol assesses how effective and safe these herbs are in managing primary dysmenorrhea. METHOD

The role of self-management in endometriosis pain: insights from a cross-sectional survey in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis has a significant negative impact on women's lives. Unfortunately, current medical treatments often fail to provide adequate pain relief and may cause intolerable side effects. Although many women experiencing primary dysmenorrhoea employ self-management strategies to help alleviate period-related symptoms, there is a paucity of knowledge about how women with endometriosis manage their symptoms through self-management. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was distributed in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, between August and December 2022, targeting women aged

Home-based self-administered transcranial direct current stimulation for women affected by primary dysmenorrhoea in Northeastern Brazil: a protocol study.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of women with primary dysmenorrhoea is high and negatively impacts physical and mental health. The intense cyclic episodes of pain generate central nervous system dysfunctional processing. In this sense, strategies focused on the central nervous system are important to re-establish normal functioning. Home-based self-administered transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) emerges as a strategy to modulate dysfunctional brain areas and improve the symptoms. This protocol aims to evaluate the effects of home-based self-administered tDCS for pain, premenstrual sympt

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Primary dysmenorrhea (PD) is common and has a major impact on women's daily activities and quality of life. Wenjing decoction (WD), a classic Chinese medicine formula, has been widely used for thousands of years in China to treat PD. However, the key pharmacodynamic substances in WD responsible for its anti-dysmenorrhea efficacy are still unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to screen WD for anti-dysmenorrhea components using the spectrum-effect relationship analysis and validate their efficacy equivalence. METHODS: The chemical composition of WD was id

Pregnancy after Tompkins metroplasty for Robert's uterus.

Two patients of early adolescence age presented with medically resistant primary dysmenorrhoea. Imaging (MRI scan) confirmed an asymmetric uterine septum with a unilaterally obstructed horn with haematometra. Laparotomy and Tompkins metroplasty was performed to unify the uterine cavity in each case, a technique not used for this condition before. Dysmenorrhoea resolved postoperatively. One patient got pregnant spontaneously 3.5 years later and was delivered by emergency caesarean section at 36 weeks of gestation. There are five reported cases of pregnancy after treatment for a Robert's uterus,

The effects of taping in the management of primary dysmenorrhoea: A systematic review with meta-analysis.

In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we explored the efficacy of taping as a non-pharmacological intervention for pain reduction in primary dysmenorrhoea (PD), a prevalent condition causing significant quality of life impairment. We conducted a comprehensive search across databases including PubMed, PEDro, and Web of Science to identify randomized controlled trials assessing taping's effectiveness in PD for pain relief. Our criteria focused on studies comparing taping to no intervention or alternatives, with pain outcomes primarily measured using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). The qu
