BACKGROUND: We have previously described the prevalence in pregnancy of hypertension, proteinuria, oedema and preeclampsia/eclampsia according to maternal body mass index (BMI) and smoking status. We found that these disorders were less frequent among smoking women. To investigate whether this relationship is causal or a chance finding, we here present an analysis according to BMI and smoking specified according to the number of cigarettes consumed per day.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were from the German Perinatal Survey of 1998-2000. We classified women by BMI as underweight (BMI<18.5 kg/m2

INTRODUCTION: Pre-eclampsia (PE), a severe pregnancy-specific disease characterized by the new onset of hypertension, proteinuria, edema, and a series of other systematic disorders, is a state of widespread mitochondrial dysfunction of the placenta.
METHODS: We compared the morphology of mitochondria in pre-eclamptic and normotensive placentae using electron microscopy. To reveal the systematic protein expression changes of placental mitochondria that might explain the pathogenesis of PE, we performed iTRAQ analysis combined with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) on di

INTRODUCTION: Hypertensive disorders complicating pregnancy seriously endanger the safety of the mother and fetus during pregnancy. Very few studies have explored hypertensive disorders of pregnancy in India, even though this disease has been associated with adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes. This study aimed to analyze the disease pattern and risk factors associated with the disorder and assess the maternal and fetal outcomes in cases of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This case-control study was carried out over 1 year from 2011 to 2012 at the Department of

BACKGROUND: Pre-eclampsia associated hyponatraemia is a very rare condition that can potentially lead to serious maternal and fetal complications and that constitute a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge even for an experienced physician.
CASE REPORT: A 25-year old female presented to the clinic at 25.3 weeks of gestation with mild physical signs of edema along with hypertension, proteinuria, and a severe hyponatremia (113 mEq/L). Hyponatremia was classified as hypervolemic and resolved 72 hours after the delivery with water restriction.
CONCLUSIONS: The pathogenesis of pre-eclampsia associ

OBJECTIVE: To determine how urine dipstick test, edema, and/or excessive weight gain (EWG, defined as ⩾500g/week) at antenatal visits predict significant proteinuria (defined as a protein-to-creatinine ratio [P/Cr, mg/mg] ⩾0.27) and preeclampsia.
METHODS: Data from 3279 antenatal visits between 30 and 36weeks of gestation were studied in 783 women with singleton pregnancies. In 24 preeclamptic pregnancies, data from 89 antenatal visits at and before diagnosis of preeclampsia were used. Spot P/Cr was determined in women with repeated positive dipstick test results in two successive antenatal v

Preeclampsia monitored by the amount of proteinuria usually does not show amelioration during pregnancy. A 37-year-old nulliparous woman was admitted to our hospital at gestational week (GW) 24(-1/7) due to rapid weight gain (6.2 kg/4 weeks) and oligohydramnios. Hypertension (151/91 mmHg) appeared at GW 25(-0/7) and proteinuria not detected at GW 24(-0/7) became significant (0.55 g/day) at GW 25(-2/7) . During the 2 successive weeks after administration of betamethasone at 12 mg twice and transabdominal amnioinfusion with 250 mL of Ringer's acetate solution at GW 25(-3/7) , generalized edema,

BACKGROUND: Undiagnosed maternal congenital heart disease can result in significant risks to both mother and fetus. When maternal symptoms and signs are atypical of preeclampsia, broadening the differential diagnosis and multidisciplinary consultation can lead to improved outcomes.
CASE: A 24-year-old primiparous woman with a pregnancy complicated by elevated blood pressure and proteinuria presented at term with symptoms of decreased fetal movement, increasing dyspnea, and cough. Her symptoms progressively worsened until she experienced cardiorespiratory arrest during attempted intubation. Em

During human pregnancy, a subset of placental cytotrophoblasts (CTBs) differentiates into cells that aggressively invade the uterus and its vasculature, anchoring the progeny and rerouting maternal blood to the placenta. In preeclampsia (PE), CTB invasion is limited, reducing placental perfusion and/or creating intermittent flow. This syndrome, affecting 4%-8% of pregnancies, entails maternal vascular alterations (e.g., high blood pressure, proteinuria, and edema) and, in some patients, fetal growth restriction. The only cure is removal of the faulty placenta, i.e., delivery. Previously, we sh

Preeclampsia (PE) is an important, common, and dangerous complication of pregnancy; it causes maternal and perinatal illness and is responsible for a high proportion of maternal and infant deaths. PE is associated with increased blood pressure and proteinuria, with a whole host of other potentially serious complications in the mother and fetus. The maternal syndrome in PE is primarily that of generalized dysfunction of the maternal endothelium, and this generalized endothelial dysfunction appears to be part of an exaggerated systemic inflammatory response that involves maternal leukocytes and

Pre-eclampsia is a disorder that occurs only during pregnancy and the postpartum period and affects both the mother and the unborn child. Affecting at least 5-8% of all pregnancies, it can be a rapidly progressive condition characterised by hypertension and proteinuria. Oedema, sudden weight gain, headaches and changes in vision are important symptoms. However, some women with rapidly advancing disease report few symptoms.

Preeclampsia is a syndrome specific of pregnancy and placenta diagnosed after 20 WG on the association of an hypertension and a proteinuria. It is responsible for significant maternal-fetal morbidity and mortality which justify the development of markers for screening, diagnosis and prognosis. These markers are actors or witnesses to the various stages and mechanisms of the disease : the initial defect of trophoblast invasion and remodeling of uterine arteries (proteases [PAPP-A, ADAM-12, uPA, MMPs], their inhibitors, and angiogenic factors [PlGF, sflt-1, s-eng]) which induces hydrostatic abno

Preeclampsia is the most common hypertensive disorder to occur during pregnancy. A healthy 38-year-old primipara presented with pretibial edema at 33 weeks of gestation followed by the development of proteinuria at 36 weeks of gestation. She had no past medical history of hypertension and was normotensive during gestation. Her proteinuria persisted after delivery, and she was also hypoalbuminemic. A renal biopsy revealed a remodeling of the glomerular basement membrane (GBM) with double contours. Some of the glomerular segments showed endothelial swelling. Immunoperoxidase staining for C4b-bin

Mirror syndrome is a rare disorder in which fetal hydrops is associated with maternal oedema, proteinuria and hypertension. The aetiology of the maternal condition is unknown, but it is thought to be related to preeclampsia. Few descriptions exist of placental morphology in mirror syndrome, but placentomegaly is consistently observed. In this case placental morphology showed villous oedema and syncytial nuclear aggregates where villi were in direct contact. Immunoperoxidase staining for VEGFR1 and Endoglin was more intense in mirror syndrome compared to gestational-age matched controls, and at

Pre-eclampsia (preE), a pregnancy disorder with the de novo onset of hypertension and proteinuria after 20 weeks of gestation, has multiple triggers that initiate pathophysiologic mechanisms. This review addresses translational aspects of preE by synthesizing information on preE pathogenesis, describing diagnostic biomarkers that predict disease, and suggesting strategies to lessen adverse outcomes. Key to this understanding is the role of cardiotonic bufodienolides, with marinobufagenin (MBG) as the prototype, and angiogenic factors in preE pathogenesis. Data from a rat model believed to mimi
