Unveiling the prenatal features of HADDS: A case report and literature review.

Hypotonia, Ataxia, and Delayed Development Syndrome (HADDS), triggered by EBF3 mutations, is a neurodevelopmental disorder syndrome characterized by hypotonia, ataxia, and developmental delay. The affected individuals often are unable to care for themselves, which has a significant impact on society and families. Hence, prenatal screening and diagnosis are particularly important. However, symptoms and signs of HADDS caused by mutations in EBF3 have not been studied until now. Herein, we report the case of a 1-year-old boy carrying a heterozygous point mutation in the EBF3 gene (c.271 del, p. A

The role of pharmacological interventions in managing urological complications during pregnancy and childbirth: A review.

Pregnancy leads to a number of structural and functional changes in the urinary system, which makes females susceptible to urological complications. This review aims to discuss the epidemiology, complications and prevention and management of urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney stones and bladder dysfunction in pregnancy. UTIs are the most common urological problem presenting in 10% of pregnant women; Escherichia coli is the most common causative organism. If left untreated, UTIs lead to acute pyelonephritis which occurs in about 2% of pregnant women and which has serious consequences for b

Effects of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors and Ondansetron on Urinary Tract Infections in Pregnancy.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are prevalent during pregnancy and pose risks of adverse outcomes. Recent research suggests that urethral serotonin signaling may protect against ascending uropathogens. With the common use of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) and ondansetron, a serotonin receptor antagonist, during pregnancy, it is essential to explore their interactions with serotonin mechanisms to improve maternal health care. This study examines the relationship between SSRIs and ondansetron use in pregnancy and the incidence of UTIs and other negative outcomes. A retrospective

Multidisciplinary Management of Pregnancy in Bladder Exstrophy: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Classic bladder exstrophy (CBE) is a rare congenital condition affecting multiple organs, primarily the urinary and musculoskeletal systems. Management involves multiple reconstructive surgical procedures and aims to maintain renal function, achieve urinary continence, and support normal reproductive health. Pregnancies in women with CBE can be complicated by recurrent urinary tract infections, pelvic prolapse, and a higher risk of preterm birth. CASE REPORT We report the case of a 33-year-old woman with a history of CBE, admitted at 32 weeks of pregnancy with fever and symptoms of

Emergence of recurrent urinary tract infection: Dissecting the mechanism of antimicrobial resistance, host-pathogen interaction, and hormonal imbalance.

Urinary tract infection is one of the most common infections worldwide, causing numerous deaths every year. The gut-bladder axis has been recently found to be a key factor in initiating UTI pathogenesis, along with the imbalance in the gut microbiome, which is associated with advanced susceptibility to rUTI. The patients who suffer from UTIs are, more often than not, the ones who have the lowest levels of butyrate-producing gut bacteria. Antibiotics cause dysbiosis in the gut and increase the growth of uropathogenic strains. Moreover, the gut-vagina and vagina-bladder axes are involved in UTIs

[Limited dorsal myeloschisis: From antenatal screening to postnatal evolution. About a series of cases from the Grand Est, Bourgogne and Franche-Comté].

INTRODUCTION: Limited dorsal myeloschisis (LDM) is a rare closed neural tube defect characterized by the presence of a fibroneural rod connecting the spinal cord to the skin, and a focal closed skin defect. Distinguishing between open and closed forms of dysraphism is a major challenge, given their variable prognosis. However, the diagnosis of LDM in the antenatal period is difficult and the prognosis of children is little studied, although these data are vital in order to establish suitable prenatal advice and provide couples with the best possible support. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted

Bladder Erosion and stone formation: a rare complication of laparoscopic cervical cerclage.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cerclage represents a practical approach to addressing cervical insufficiency, but it also can bring serious complications. We present an extremely rare case of bladder erosion caused by the exposure of Mersilene tape after laparoscopic cervical cerclage for 3 years, which resulted in the formation of bladder calculi. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 35-year-old gravida 5 para 2 female with symptoms suggestive of urinary tract infections after 3 years of exposure to the Mersilene tape, including urinary frequency urinary urgency and painful micturition. Invasive urodynamic investigations in the management of women with refractory overactive bladder symptoms: FUTURE, a superiority RCT and economic evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Overactive bladder is a common problem affecting the United Kingdom adult female population. Symptoms include urinary urgency, with or without urgency incontinence, increased daytime urinary frequency and nocturia. Initial conservative treatments for overactive bladder are unsuccessful in 25-40% of women (refractory overactive bladder). Before considering invasive treatments, such as botulinum toxin injection-A or sacral neuromodulation, guidelines recommend urodynamics to confirm diagnosis of detrusor overactivity. However, the clinical and cost effectiveness of urodynamics has ne

Short CIAFU recommendations on the screening and management of asymptomatic bacteriuria in immunocompromised patients.

INTRODUCTION: Immunosuppression refers to a functional or quantitative reduction in immune defenses, resulting in a diminished ability to combat microbial pathogens. Immunocompromised patients are at increased risk of severe infections, associated with elevated morbidity and mortality. In routine clinical practice, urine cultures are often performed systematically in patients considered at risk of infection, regardless of urinary symptoms, with the aim of detecting and subsequently treating potential asymptomatic bacteriuria. This study aimed to assess the clinical relevance of screening for a

A catheter-associated urinary tract infection mouse model to study bladder dysfunction and pain.

Bladder pain and dysfunction are common symptoms in patients with urinary tract infections (UTIs), including catheter-associated UTIs (CAUTIs). Underlying mechanisms of chronic bladder pain and recurrent UTIs remain poorly understood, and good translational mice models are sparse. Here, we developed a female mouse suprapubic CAUTI model, and combined in vivo and ex vivo imaging techniques and behavioral assays to longitudinally evaluate the consequences for bladder function, inflammation, abdominal pain, bacterial colonization, and biofilm. Catheter-associated urinary tract infection animals,

Pregnancy after repaired bladder exstrophy: a case report.

Bladder exstrophy (BE) is a rare congenital anomaly of the anterior abdominal wall which results in externalisation of the distal urogenital tract and requires multiple surgeries for repair in early childhood. Pregnancy in patients with repaired BE can be high risk and may present with complications across the entire pregnancy. The literature reports decreased fertility rates and increased rates of miscarriage, preterm birth, placental abruption and postpartum complications in pregnancy for people with repaired bladder exstrophy. The present report concerns the case of a pregnant 27-year-old p

Minimally Invasive Approach to Intrauterine Device Migration Into the Bladder Using Holmium Laser.

The intrauterine device (IUD) is a widely utilized method of contraception known for its high efficacy, safety profile, and long-term effectiveness. Despite its favorable characteristics, rare but potentially serious complications may occur, such as uterine perforation and device migration into adjacent pelvic or abdominal structures. One of the less frequent but clinically relevant complications is intravesical migration, where the device perforates the uterine wall and erodes into the urinary bladder. This can result in chronic lower urinary tract symptoms, recurrent urinary tract infections

Nursing support for testicular sperm aspiration and intracytoplasmic sperm injection in patients with high paraplegia: a retrospective case series.

BACKGROUND: High paraplegia, primarily affecting young men during their reproductive years, often results in ejaculatory dysfunction and infertility. Testicular sperm aspiration (TESA) combined with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) offers a viable path to biological parenthood for this population. However, evidence on nursing strategies supporting such procedures is limited. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and psychosocial outcomes of patients with high paraplegia due to spinal cord injury who underwent TESA-ICSI and explore the effectiveness of specialized nursing interventio

Pregnancy Following Clam Cystoplasty and Mitrofanoff Procedure in a Patient With Fowler's Syndrome and Detrusor Overactivity.

Fowler's syndrome causes urinary retention due to failure of the urethral sphincter to relax. Management aims for complete bladder emptying, typically via intermittent self-catheterization. If conservative treatment fails, detrusor overactivity with Fowler's syndrome may be managed surgically using clam cystoplasty and the Mitrofanoff procedure to increase bladder capacity and reduce pressure. We report a rare case of pregnancy in a woman with Fowler's syndrome and detrusor overactivity, who previously underwent clam cystoplasty and Mitrofanoff procedure. She had a continent, functional abdomi
