Early morphological and physiological parameters of survival and mortality in cultured southern flounder (Paralichthys lethostigma) larvae.

This study focused on the relation between larval southern flounder (Paralichthys lethostigma) growth, cardiac performance, and metabolic physiology (metabolic rate, hormones). Two-way ANOVAs were performed among larvae groups that successfully survived through metamorphosis (n = 1) vs. those that succumbed to mass mortality early in development (n = 2). Larvae were monitored from 5 to 50 days post hatch (dph). The comparison of morphological and physiological parameters for the three batches for equivalent life-stages from 5 to 12 dph (n = 8-10/dph), showed specific growth rate (SGR) in the s

Dual-Path Associations Between System Operation Quality and Autonomous Taxi Use Intention in a Cross-Sectional Survey.

This cross-sectional study examines how system operation quality is associated with intention to use autonomous taxis through personal cognitive and social information pathways. Residents of Wuhan, Suzhou, and Shanghai who had heard of or been exposed to autonomous taxi services completed an anonymous 5-point Likert questionnaire. System transparency, system safety, and service quality were modeled as operation-quality dimensions; perceived risk and online word-of-mouth (OWOM) information evaluation were tested as parallel statistical mediators, with trust and conformity tendency as moderators

NEK kinase TcRDK2 controls differentiation, host cell infection, and remodeling of the translation initiation machinery in Trypanosoma cruzi.

UNLABELLED: Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiologic agent of Chagas disease, alternates between replicative epimastigotes and amastigotes and non-dividing, mammal-infective metacyclic and bloodstream trypomastigotes. Protein phosphorylation is a major regulatory mechanism in trypanosomatids, whose kinomes reveal an expanded family of NIMA-related kinases (NEKs). Here, we investigated the role of T. cruzi RDK2 (repressor of differentiation kinase 2), a conserved NEK that carries a C-terminal pleckstrin homology (PH) domain. Endogenous gene tagging showed that TcRDK2 is expressed in all major life cycl

Beyond Accuracy: Do Large Language Models Provide Clinically Adequate Responses to Parent-Initiated Questions on Pediatric Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder?

BackgroundParents increasingly use large language models (LLMs) to obtain information about child and adolescent mental health. In pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), where early recognition and intervention are critical, the accuracy of AI-generated information may have clinical implications. This study evaluated LLM responses to parent-oriented questions about pediatric OCD.MethodsAn exploratory cross-sectional evaluation was conducted using three conversational AI systems: ChatGPT (GPT-4o), Google Gemini, and DeepSeek. Twenty questions reflecting common parental concerns were ide

Effects of the AI-HEALS intervention based on the Fogg behavior model on self-management in postoperative breast cancer patients: a randomized controlled trial study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy among women, and postoperative self-management is critically associated with long-term quality of life. Traditional clinical nursing and mobile health interventions frequently lack behavioral theory support, thereby failing to meet individualized rehabilitation needs. The Fogg Behavior Model (FBM) provides a theoretical framework for precise intervention through the dimensions of motivation, ability, and prompts. Accordingly, this study developed an FBM-based AI-HEALS intervention and will validate its effectiveness via a Randomized Contr

Massive histone H3 phosphorylation without mitotic chromosome condensation.

Histone post-translational modifications change dramatically as cells enter mitosis. Indeed, histone phosphorylation and deacetylation have been proposed to be major factors driving the compaction of mitotic chromosomes. However, whether these modification changes directly regulate mitotic chromatin compaction remains a subject of debate. Here, we use a CDK1as chemical-genetic system to accumulate cells in G2 phase. Treatment of these G2 cells with the phosphatase inhibitor calyculin A efficiently causes them to undergo premature chromosome condensation, even when the CDK1as allele is inhibite

Management of sacral fragility fractures leading to spinopelvic dissociation: a scoping review.

PURPOSE: Fragility fractures affecting the sacrum present an increasing challenge to orthopaedic practice, due to limited comparative data and the absence of consensus on optimal management. U-Type and Rommens Type IVb fractures may result in a bilateral pattern of spinopelvic dissociation with possible neurological injury. This scoping review aims to summarise the current principles of care, indications for surgery, and outcomes of operative versus non-operative treatment for low-energy bilateral posterior sacral fractures (BPSFs). METHODS: This scoping review adhered to the Preferred Report

Fibrinolytics in the Management of Complex Abdominal Collections: a case report and review of the literature.

Complex intra-abdominal collections typically present management challenges, with percutaneous drainage remaining the standard of care. Fibrinolytic therapy has limited data for complex intra-abdominal collections despite solid evidence in intrapleural empyema. Here, we report a case of successful fibrinolytic therapy in a patient with persistent intra-abdominal collection. A 57-year-old woman with a history of open Roux-en-Y gastric bypass presented with a perforated marginal ulcer. Following successful surgical management, she developed a recurrent/persistent intra-abdominal collection that

Extending prophylactic antimicrobial use beyond 48 h postoperatively fails to reduce surgical site infections and other healthcare-associated infections in patients undergoing colorectal resection: a Propensity Score Matching study.

BACKGROUND: It is controversial whether antibiotic should be used prophylactically 48 h after colorectal resection. Hence, the association of prophylactic antimicrobial (PA) use beyond 48 h postoperatively with the incidence of surgical site infections (SSI) and other healthcare-associated infections (HAI) in patients receiving colorectal resection surgery was evaluated. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 2691 patients who underwent colorectal resection between March 1, 2023, and December 31, 2025. Patients were categorized into the non-PA beyond 48 h postoperatively group (n

Open Reduction for Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip in the Newborn Hip Screening Era: Changing Patient Characteristics and Surgical Strategies Without Compromising Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Newborn hip ultrasound scan (USS) for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) has significantly reduced the number of delayed cases. However, open reduction (OR) is still required when nonsurgical treatment fails in properly screened patients, as well as in neglected and late-presenting cases. The aim of this study is to compare the clinical and radiologic outcomes of OR for DDH between screened and neglected cases. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with DDH and who underwent OR at a single center were included and categorized into 2 groups: Screened patients with an unsuccessful non

Role of Amorphous Chains in Nanoplastic Formation from Semicrystalline Polymers.

Semicrystalline polymers, e.g., polyethylene terephthalate (PET), release micro- (100 nm to 1 mm) and nanoplastics (up to 100 nm) [MNPL] when they are degraded under quiescent conditions. However, the exact molecular mechanisms leading to material fragmentation into MNPL are unknown. Here, we monitor the evolution of chain molecular weight and the MNPL production kinetics during hydrolysis of PET pellets. We find that only ≈0.6% of the amorphous phase ester bonds are hydrolyzed at the onset of MNPL release. Then, by combining a random scission model with measured amorphous spacings, we estimat

Multilayer defense collapse model and rare taxa-based early warning for solid-state vinegar fermentation stagnation: A time-series metagenomic study.

Fermentation stagnation is a persistent challenge in industrial vinegar production, yet its microecological mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we conducted time series metagenomic analysis comparing normal and stagnant solid state acetic acid fermentation, and propose the Multilayer Defense Collapse (MDC) model as a unifying framework for stagnation mechanisms. We found fermentation stagnation represents a cascade collapse of four progressive defense layers rather than a single-point failure. Initial perturbation first impairs community network resilience, manifesting as community simp

Computational Performance Evaluation of Porous Ti-6Al-4V Scaffold Architectures for Femoral Defect Healing Using a Coupled Finite Element-Mechanoregulation Framework.

Additively manufactured porous titanium scaffolds can provide fixation and guide regeneration of large bone defects, but design choices are constrained by uncertainty in how tissue formation and fatigue-driven failure co-evolve under rehabilitation loading. A patient-specific femoral diaphyseal defect was reconstructed and filled with Ti-6Al-4V scaffolds spanning 16 architectures across strut-based, sheet-based triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS), and stochastic families, all designed at 75% porosity with a 1 mm minimum feature thickness. A coupled finite element-mechanoregulation framework

PDIM drives the transition from repairable to catastrophic EsxA-mediated vacuole membrane damage during Mycobacterium marinum infection.

During infection, pathogenic mycobacteria damage the membrane of the Mycobacterium-containing vacuole (MCV), triggering host repair responses that preserve an intracellular permissive niche before bacteria escape to the cytosol at later stages. How the MCV transitions from repairable injury to catastrophic rupture remains poorly understood. Here, we dissected the respective contributions of the ESX-1 effectors EsxA/EsxB and the cell-envelope lipid phthiocerol dimycocerosate (PDIM) during Mycobacterium marinum infection of the amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum. Combining host reporters for membra

Oral versus intranasal probiotics for nasal microbiome modulation: a comparative review of route-dependent mechanisms and clinical implications.

Probiotic modulation of the nasal microbiome can be achieved through oral administration, which relies on the gut-nose axis and systemic immunomodulation, or direct intranasal instillation, which provides immediate local action. Despite growing evidence, no systematic comparison of these routes has been published. This narrative review synthesizes clinical and mechanistic evidence comparing oral versus intranasal probiotic strategies to inform route selection based on disease pathophysiology and strain-specific efficacy. We evaluated randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, meta-analy

Cavitary status and differential treatment response in refractory or severe Mycobacterium avium complex pulmonary disease: Amikacin liposome inhalation suspension versus intravenous amikacin.

BACKGROUND: Despite guideline-based treatment, Mycobacterium avium complex pulmonary disease (MAC-PD) often fails to achieve culture conversion. The current guideline recommends adding amikacin liposome inhalation suspension (ALIS) or intravenous amikacin (IV AMK) as intensifying treatment for refractory MAC-PD; however, no clear guidance exists for selecting these treatment options. We compared culture conversion between these agents and explored whether the difference varies by cavity status. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review from August 2019 to July 2025. Methods and Techniques for Closed-Loop Gastrointestinal Pacing.

PURPOSE: Gastrointestinal slow waves are rhythmic electrical events that contribute to the coordination of motility. Functional motility disorders such as gastroparesis are linked to abnormal slow wave activity, and current treatments do not target the underlying electrical dysfunction. Gastrointestinal electrical pacing restores normal rhythms, but open-loop pacing lacks adaptation to underlying slow wave activity, leading to reduced energy efficiency and potential overstimulation. METHODS: A novel closed-loop pacing system was developed to detect gastric and intestinal slow waves and dynami

Medicare and Medicaid Professional Fee Reimbursement for Spinal Cord Stimulation: An Analysis of National and State-level Trends.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is an important modality for treating chronic pain in patients who have failed conservative therapy and a substantial portion of the population rely on fee-for-service Medicare or Medicaid for coverage. We aimed to determine physician professional fee reimbursement rates and the ratio of Medicaid to Medicare professional fee reimbursement (MMI) for three common Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes related to SCS therapy (63650, 63685, and 63655) across states. Secondarily, we explored trends in utilization and reimbursement of these procedures by
