Evaluating the clinical effectiveness of repeat screening for gestational diabetes mellitus following a diagnosis of large for gestational age and/or polyhydramnios.

OBJECTIVE: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) screening is often repeated in the third trimester when large for gestational age (LGA) and/or polyhydramnios are diagnosed. We evaluated outcomes for individuals who did versus did not rescreen, and also for individuals who passed or did not pass rescreening. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study from January 2011 to March 2024 of term, singleton pregnancies diagnosed with LGA and/or polyhydramnios after a normal GDM screen at 24-30 weeks was performed. Non-inferiority analyses were performed for the comparison between those who did not rescreen

Prenatal radiofrequency ablation for bronchopulmonary sequestration: a case report of successful fetal intervention and longitudinal outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Bronchopulmonary sequestration (BPS), a rare congenital pulmonary malformation, is characterized by nonfunctional pulmonary parenchyma with aberrant systemic arterial supply (typically from the aorta or its major branches) and absence of communication with the tracheobronchial tree. Large BPS lesions pose significant fetal risks, including hydrops fetalis, mediastinal shift, and polyhydramnios, necessitating timely prenatal intervention to prevent fetal demise. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of successful ultrasound-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of the feeding arter

Development and validation of a predictive risk model for placental abruption in women with pre-eclampsia using SMOTE.

Placental abruption is a serious complication in pregnant women with preeclampsia. This study investigated the risk factors for placental abruption and developed a predictive model using the Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE). A total of 280 pregnant women with preeclampsia treated between September 2020 and September 2025 were enrolled and classified into placental abruption and non-placental abruption groups. Logistic regression showed that parity ≥3, severe preeclampsia, anemia, polyhydramnios, and short umbilical cord were independent risk factors for placental abruption. R

Adherence to gestational diabetes screening guidelines: Retrospective audit in three public hospitals in Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a major contributor to adverse perinatal outcomes. Most guidelines recommend universal GDM screening using standardized testing protocols, yet implementation in low- and middle-income countries remains limited. This study evaluated GDM screening uptake and guideline-concordant testing in routine antenatal care in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. METHODS: We conducted a facility-based, cross-sectional study of pregnant women receiving antenatal care in three public hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A sample of 1,050 antenatal records was abstracted

The Maximal Vertical Pocket Better Identifies Pregnancies with Polyhydramnios at Increased Risk of Severe Neonatal Morbidity than the Amniotic Fluid Index: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background: Polyhydramnios is associated with adverse perinatal outcomes and is commonly assessed using either the amniotic fluid index (AFI) or the maximal vertical pocket (MVP). Although both methods are accepted in clinical practice, they frequently classify the same pregnancy differently, and their relative ability to predict adverse neonatal outcomes remains uncertain. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of pregnancies delivered at a tertiary university medical center between 2010 and 2025. Pregnancies with an AFI or MVP measurement within two weeks before delivery were eli

Normal OGTT does not imply uniform risk: association of area under the curve percentiles with adverse perinatal outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: Although the 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is the standard diagnostic tool for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), women with normal OGTT results may still show differences in glucose metabolism. The area under the glucose curve (AUC) reflects the overall glycemic response during the OGTT and may help identify differences in perinatal risk not captured by conventional thresholds. We aimed to evaluate perinatal outcomes across OGTT-AUC quartiles in pregnancies with normal glucose tolerance. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, 11,607 pregnant women with normal 75

Prenatal diagnosis of cranio-orbito-maxillary neuroblastoma: a case report.

OBJECTIVES: Congenital neuroblastoma is one of the most common solid tumors in the perinatal period; however, primary cranial localization with prenatal onset is extremely rare. We present a unique case of cranio-orbito-maxillary congenital neuroblastoma detected during the early second trimester, highlighting its dynamic prenatal evolution, diagnostic challenges, and postnatal clinical course. CASE PRESENTATION: A 36-year-old pregnant woman was referred at 15 weeks of gestation with a suspected fetal cranial cyst. Fetal neurosonography revealed a unilocular, avascular cystic lesion near the

Third trimester hydrops fetalis as the presentation leads to prenatal diagnosis of familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis.

OBJECTIVE: We first report a case of familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (FHL) diagnosed in utero due to third trimester hydrops fetalis. CASE REPORT: A 28-year-old G1P0 woman had a normal nuchal translucency scan and 2 second trimester ultrasounds at 18 and 24 weeks. The third trimester ultrasound at 30 weeks showed mild polyhydramnios. The follow-up ultrasound at 32 weeks showed features of hydrops fetalis with pleural effusions, ascites, skin edema and polyhydramnios. Fetal blood sampling via cordocentesis showed a mild anemia (hemoglobin-100 g/L), thrombocytopenia (platelets-12×10

[Ultrasound diagnosis of fetal infections: current possibilities and limitations].

INTRODUCTION: Fetal infections, particularly those caused by TORCH agents (toxoplasmosis, other [syphilis, varicella-zoster, parvovirus B19], rubella, cytomegalovirus, herpes), may significantly affect fetal growth and development, resulting in a substantial risk of morbidity and mortality. Since infections are mostly preventable causes of congenital anomalies, early diagnosis relies on serological and molecular testing and fetal ultrasound. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of fetal infections and their detectable ultrasound features. METHOD: This retrospective s

A newborn with type 1 Bartter syndrome: challenges in the treatment and development during 30 months follow-up-a case report.

Type I Bartter syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive tubulopathy resulting from mutations in the SLC12A1 gene, leading to defective sodium-chloride reabsorption in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle. Affected neonates typically present with profound fluid and electrolyte disturbances, polyuria, and metabolic derangements. Early diagnosis and individualized management are crucial to prevent life-threatening complications and support appropriate growth and development. We report the case of a male preterm infant born at 33 weeks' gestation following a pregnancy complicated by severe

Fetal urinary ascites caused by bladder rupture due to paraurethral cyst: a rare case.

Fetal urinary ascites is an uncommon prenatal finding most often associated with lower urinary tract obstruction (LUTO). We report a rare case of fetal urinary ascites caused by bladder rupture secondary to suspected urethral compression by a paraurethral cyst. A 26-year-old gravida 3 para 1 woman was referred at 32 weeks' gestation due to newly detected isolated fetal ascites and mild polyhydramnios. Detailed ultrasonography suggested bladder wall defect and a cystic structure adjacent to the right inguinal canal. Fetal MRI confirmed bladder rupture and supported the suspicion of LUTO. Conser
