Hypoglycemia in pregnancy: maternal characteristics and neonatal outcomes from oral glucose tolerance tests.

OBJECTIVE: Heterogenous results were reported in the effects of hypoglycemia in pregnancy. This study evaluated pregnancy outcomes in women with hypoglycemia during the antenatal 75-gram oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). METHODS: OGTT results of the mothers of all live-born delivered in a tertiary obstetrics centre were evaluated between Jan 2021 and June 2022. All patients had OGTT at 26-30th weeks of gestation. Hypoglycemia was defined as any low plasma glucose ≤ 3.5mmol/L on OGTT. Maternal and neonatal outcomes were compared among the four groups; normal results (group 1), hypoglycemia i

A 12-hour versus 24-hour magnesium sulfate intravenous regimen in postpartum women with preeclampsia: a randomized clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) is the standard drug for treatment of eclampsia, and to prevent its occurrence in women with preeclampsia with severe features, however, the ideal postpartum treatment duration remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether a 12-hour postpartum MgSO4 regimen is non-inferior to the standard 24-hour regimen. METHODS: This was a single-center, randomized, non-blinded, non-inferiority clinical trial conducted at a tertiary hospital in Brazil. The intervention involved the use of MgSO4 for 12 h after childbirth, compared to the standard regimen of 24 h. Wome

Breastfeeding self-efficacy, milk output, and influencing factors in mothers of preterm infants: a prospective cohort study in the NICU.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding self-efficacy (BSE) is a critical predictor of lactation success, yet its role among mothers of preterm infants remains understudied, especially during the early postpartum period. This study aimed to (1) examine the association between BSE, feeding choices, and milk output in preterm mothers within 3–14 days postpartum, and (2) identify factors influencing BSE. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted with 200 mothers of preterm infants in a Chinese NICU. Data on demographics, social support, breastfeeding behaviors, and BSE (measured via the BSES-SF scale)

A brief international screening tool for traumatic birth and childbirth-related PTSD: the city BiTS-short form.

INTRODUCTION: Screening to identify traumatic births and childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder (CB-PTSD) is critical for reducing the global burden of maternal mental health challenges. Despite this, no brief, validated tools exist for international use. This study therefore developed and validated a short version of the City Birth Trauma Scale (City BiTS) to provide a brief, globally relevant screening tool. METHODS: The City BiTS-Short was developed in three stages. In stage 1, exclusive lasso statistical analyses were conducted on survey data of 11 302 postpartum women in 31 co

Improving perinatal mood and anxiety disorders through integrated infant mental health care in obstetrics: evidence from a program evaluation study.

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety in the perinatal period affect many women and have multiple negative impacts on the mother and baby. The Integrated Infant Mental Health approach embeds a Behavioral Health Consultant (IMH-BHC) who has specialized training in Infant Mental Health into OB/GYN clinics. This manuscript reports a quasi-experimental comparison of two groups of women through pregnancy and the first year postpartum, receiving integrated IMH care versus standard OB care. We hypothesized integrated IMH care patients would show less anxiety and depression across pregnancy and postpartu

Childbirth under prolonged and cumulative stress: The roles of perceived risk, self-compassion, and intolerance of uncertainty in predicting postpartum psychological well-being.

PROBLEM: Childbirth under prolonged cumulative stress and uncertainty conditions poses unique challenges to postpartum psychological well-being, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. BACKGROUND: Under such extreme conditions, the relationship between perceived childbirth risk and maternal adjustment may be mediated through internal regulatory resources like self-compassion. Personality vulnerability factors such as intolerance of uncertainty may modulate these pathways. AIM: This study examined how perceived risk during childbirth, self-compassion, and intolerance of uncertainty inte

Prevalence and Factors Associated With Depression Among Antenatal and Postnatal Women Attending Government Health Clinics in Selangor, Malaysia: Protocol for a Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mental health concerns either during pregnancy or the postpartum period are a public health challenge. Depression, anxiety, and stress can lead to poorer outcomes in the antenatal and postpartum periods. There is evidence that the effect of stress, anxiety, and depression during pregnancy negatively affects fetal neurodevelopment and children's developmental outcomes. Early diagnosis can improve treatment outcomes and prevent negative impacts on the mother and baby. Identifying risk factors, such as age, socioeconomic status, mental health history, and family dysfunction,
