Disseminated sporotrichosis masquerading as tuberculosis in a patient without overt immunodeficiency: challenges in tuberculosis-endemic area.

Sporotrichosis is a mycosis with multitudinous clinical manifestation based on varying factors. We report a 78-year-old man who came to an out-patient clinic for progressive ulcerative cutaneous lesions for 6 months with concurrent pulmonary symptoms and osteomyelitis. Initial investigations were negative for infectious organisms and therapeutic trial of standard anti-tuberculous regimen failed to improve clinical symptoms. Subsequent fungal culture from the ulcerative skin showed dark colonies of Sporothrix schenckii complex. A review of sporotrichosis cases mimicking tuberculosis is provided

Double zoonosis: Parinaud oculoglandular syndrome from sporotrichosis and follicular conjunctivitis from Moraxella osloensis, a zoonotic co-infection from our feline friend.

A 41-year-old woman developed chronic unilateral granulomatous conjunctivitis, ipsilateral lymphadenopathy, fever and malaise, diagnostic of Parinaud oculoglandular syndrome, after contact with a sick pet cat. Tear cultures identified Sporothrix schenckii, confirmed by 18S ribosomal RNA PCR, with co-infection by Moraxella osloensis. Biopsy showed suppurative necrotising granulomatous inflammation. Oral itraconazole, topical amphotericin B and amikacin achieved remission. Although Bartonella henselae is the commonest cause of POGS, Sporothrix schenckii warrants consideration in cat-exposed pati

Molecular and Epidemiological Surveillance of Sporothrix spp. in Cats and Dogs from Southern Brazil.

Sporotrichosis, a subcutaneous mycosis caused by Sporothrix spp., has emerged as a major zoonotic disease in Brazil, primarily driven by Sporothrix brasiliensis. The southern state of Rio Grande do Sul exhibits distinctive ecological and climatic conditions that may shape the persistence and distribution of this pathogen in this region. This study conducted molecular and epidemiological surveillance of feline and canine sporotrichosis in southern Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. A total of 100 isolates from the culture collection of the Veterinary Mycology Laboratory at the Federal University of Pel

Iturin A disrupts Cryptococcus neoformans membrane integrity, attenuates virulence, and synergizes with amphotericin B.

BACKGROUND: Use of the ergot-derived dopamine receptor agonists (cabergoline and pergolide) is associated with an increased risk of cardiac valvulopathy. Pergolide was withdrawn from the US market in 2007 because of the risk of valvular heart disease, while the European Medicines Agency (EMA) required a reduction in the maximum daily dosage of cabergoline and pergolide from 6 mg/day to 3 mg/day in 2008. In Japan, the package inserts of both drugs were revised in April 2007 to request that physicians conduct periodic ultrasonic cardiography (UCG) examinations for patients taking cabergoline or

Sporotrichosis in the earlobe caused by placing an earing.

A 22-year-old woman presented with an ulcer on her right earlobe 2 months ago, with inflammation and enlarged ipsilateral lymph nodes in her neck. She was treated with antibiotics without success and then was referred to an infectious disease specialist. She has a cat at home with sporotrichosis, but without direct contact with the lesion, she did not remember any scratching by the cat. She also mentioned wearing a semi-jewel earring. This is a rare and unusual case of sporotrichosis in the earlobe, probably caused by wearing an earring contaminated by the cat's fungus that was present in the

Application of Principal Component Analysis as a Prediction Model for Feline Sporotrichosis.

Sporotrichosis is a worldwide zoonotic disease that is spreading and causing epidemics in large urban centers. Cats are the most susceptible species to develop the disease, which could cause significant systemic lesions. The aim was to investigate and to identify predictive indicators of disease progression by correlations between the blood profile (hematological and biochemical analytes) and cutaneous lesion patterns of 70 cats diagnosed with Sporothrix brasiliensis. The higher occurrence in male cats in this study could be related to being non-neutered and having access to open spaces. Princ

Therapeutic alternatives for sporotrichosis induced by wild-type and non-wild-type Sporothrix schenckii through in vitro and in vivo assessment of enilconazole, isavuconazole, posaconazole, and terbinafine.

This study explores the effectiveness of various antifungal drugs in treating sporotrichosis caused by Sporothrix schenckii, especially in non-wild-type (non-WT) strains. The drugs tested include enilconazole (ENIL), isavuconazole (ISA), posaconazole (POS), terbinafine (TER), and itraconazole (ITC). The study involved in vitro and in vivo tests on 10 WT isolates and eight ITC non-WT isolates. Two isolates were assessed using time-kill assays, checkerboard assays, and Galleria mellonella infection models. In vitro studies have shown that all of these drugs were more effective than or equal to I

Sporothrix brasiliensis Gp70 is a cell wall protein required for adhesion, proper interaction with innate immune cells, and virulence.

Sporothrix brasiliensis is one of the leading etiological agents of sporotrichosis, a cutaneous and subcutaneous mycosis worldwide distributed. This organism has been recently associated with epidemic outbreaks in Brazil. Despite the medical relevance of this species, little is known about its virulence factors, and most of the information on this subject is extrapolated from Sporothrix schenckii. Here, we generated S. brasiliensis mutants, where GP70 was silenced. In S. schenckii, this gene encodes a glycoprotein with adhesive properties required for virulence. The S. brasiliensis GP70 silenc

Accuracy of diagnostic tests for feline sporotrichosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Feline sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous infection caused by fungi of the Sporothrix genus, particularly concerning in endemic regions of South America, where cats are important vectors. Traditional diagnosis through fungal culture is time-consuming, which can delay the start of treatment. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to synthesize the evidence on the accuracy of alternative diagnostic methods for feline sporotrichosis. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted following the Cochrane Collaboration recommendations and the PRISMA-DTA checklist (CRD42023456520). Searches for observationa

Temporal and spatial distribution of sporotrichosis in the Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Area, Brazil: a comparison between human and animal cases (2013-2020).

Cat-transmitted sporotrichosis is currently hyperendemic in the Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Area, Brazil. Despite the zoonotic context, surveillance is fragmented, with human and animal contagion being assessed separately. This study aimed to describe and compare spatial and temporal patterns of sporotrichosis cases in humans and animals (cats and dogs) reported to the Brazilian Information System for Notificable Diseases in the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area, from 2013 to 2020. We conducted an ecological study based on the spatial and temporal evolution of sporotrichosis in the area. We com
