Epidemiology of cerebral palsy in Brazil through the lens of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health framework.

AIM: To establish an overall description of people with cerebral palsy (CP) in Brazil, including the epidemiology, clinical features, functioning, and access to rehabilitation and equipment, through the lens of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework, using preliminary data from the Brazilian Cerebral Palsy Register (BrCPR). METHOD: Data were extracted from the ongoing BrCPR for individuals with CP aged 0 to 100 years. The information collected included aetiological risk factors and, from the ICF, personal and health-related factors, environmenta

Visual Biofeedback (VB) through Trans-Perineal Ultrasound (TPU) during the active second stage of labor to improve maternal childbirth satisfaction: protocol of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Childbirth can be psychologically traumatic for up to 44% of women. Determinants of a negative childbirth experience include loss of control and lack of emotional support or interaction with obstetric caregivers. Vaginal childbirth also predisposes to somatic trauma, including trauma to the pelvic floor and perineum, which may lead to pelvic floor dysfunctions (PFDs). Providing Visual Biofeedback through Trans-Perineal Ultrasound (VB-TPU) during the expulsive phase of labor has been shown to increase efficacy of pushing efforts and may reduce perineal trauma. The primary aim of thi

Prevention of Pressure Injuries During Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure in Newborns: A Non-pharmacological Intervention Trial.

BACKGROUND: Nasal continuous positive airway pressure (NCPAP) is the gold standard for the treatment of respiratory distress syndrome. However, the main risks associated with NCPAP use are pressure injuries, infection at the device site and related complications, which can affect long-term outcomes. Preventing pressure injuries should therefore be a priority in nursing care. AIM: To evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions to reduce the incidence of nasal pressure injuries during NCPAP in newborns admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). STUDY DESIGN: A non-pharmacolog

From Youth Basketball to the NBA: A Matched-Pairs Follow-Up Analysis of Top-Ranked Youth Basketball Players in the USA.

BACKGROUND: Associations of youth sport participation patterns, health, and social-environmental factors with subsequent participation in the National Basketball Association (NBA) have not been investigated systematically. Prior studies suggest that high-performing athletes who achieve the world-class level of adult sport engaged in less organized training in their primary sport, participated in more multisport practice and competition, and incurred fewer injuries as youths compared with lower-performing adult national-class athletes. HYPOTHESIS: Players who sign an NBA player contract engage

Postpartum Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy Referral Rates in a Multihospital System.

IMPORTANCE: Up to 50% of parturients are at risk of developing pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) during and immediately after pregnancy. There is strong evidence for the efficacy of pelvic floor physical therapy (PFPT) in the postpartum period in reducing PFD. OBJECTIVES: Currently, there are limited data on referral practices to PFPT in the postpartum period. Understanding referral rates and associated patient and clinical characteristics is critical in guiding efforts to integrate PFPT in postpartum care. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study of individuals with term singleton b

Hyperinnervation inhibits organ-level regeneration in mammalian skin.

Some mammalian tissues can replace lost cells within one lineage, but organ-level regeneration-restoring diverse cell types across lineages-remains rare. Here, we show that late embryonic full-thickness skin injuries heal by regenerating epithelial, mesenchymal, neuronal, and vascular tissues with proper connectivity. However, this ability is lost soon after birth, resulting in failure to restore most cell types and hyperinnervation within the wound bed. Single-cell sequencing identified a postnatal wound-specific fibroblast (PWF) population absent after embryonic wounding. Through an in vivo

Systematic Review: Non-Surgical Rehabilitation Interventions for Children With Brachial Plexus Birth Injury.

Brachial plexus birth injuries (BPBIs) can affect children's occupational participation. This review examined the efficacy of non-surgical interventions used by occupational therapy for increasing the range of motion (ROM) and improving motor skills of the affected upper extremities (UEs) of children with BPBIs. Non-surgical interventions are typically used as first-line treatment or in adjunct to surgery with the aim of optimizing recovery, decreasing risk of secondary impairment, and promoting occupational participation. Sources were Scopus, Cochrane Trials (CENTRAL), Ovid (Medline), and CIN

Brachial plexus birth injury in children and adolescents: A current concepts review.

Brachial plexus birth injuries (BPBI), although rare, have a significant impact on patients and the healthcare system. While these conditions tend to be treated at specialty centers around the world that are well equipped to handle the complex needs of these patients, an understanding of the natural history, prognosis, and treatment options for this population is important for all pediatric orthopedic providers. This review aims to detail current concepts of the treatment of BPBI with a focus on clinical examination, operative indications, early surgical interventions, and long-term musculoske

The effect of a pelvic floor training program on perineal trauma during birth: a patient-preference controlled clinical trial.

Pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) is widely recommended for the prevention of urinary incontinence, but its potential to prevent perineal trauma during childbirth remains uncertain. We investigated whether a structured antenatal PFMT program could reduce severe perineal trauma and positively influence selected obstetric and neonatal outcomes. This prospective, non-randomized, patient-preference controlled trial was conducted at two tertiary centers between December 2, 2024, and September 2, 2025. Low-risk nulliparous women (defined as singleton, cephalic pregnancy at term without medical com

Stable platelet-rich plasma double-network hydrogel via insect exoskeleton-inspired crosslinking: A bioactive regenerative scaffold.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is widely applied in regenerative medicine owing to having a variety of growth factors and inherent antibacterial activity. However, its clinical applications remained limited due to its rapid degradation, burst release of bioactive molecules, and poor retention at injury sites. To overcome these challenges, in current study we developed a stable double-network PRP hydrogel (i.e., PEG@PRPG) using an insect exoskeleton-inspired crosslinking strategy. By integrating DOPA-modified 4-arm polyethylene glycol (PEG), laccase, and Ca2+/thrombin, we established a covalently r

The Impact of Nurse Home-Visiting for Pregnant and Parenting Individuals with Previous Live Births.

The Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) benefits first-time parents and their children; however, its effectiveness for families with previous children (multiparous) is not known. This quasi-experimental study used electronic health record data from three NFP sites affiliated with large health systems to evaluate the impact of NFP on pregnancy, birth, and health care utilization outcomes among multiparous families compared with propensity score-matched Medicaid-insured families who did not receive NFP. The study population included 639 multiparous pregnant individuals enrolled in NFP between 2017 an

Ovarian radiation injury and protection: Mechanisms, delivery-enabled interventions, and future directions.

Incidental ovarian irradiation during pelvic radiotherapy or total-body irradiation leads to irreversible endocrine dysfunction, premature ovarian insufficiency, and infertility in young women with cancer. Current clinical strategies-ovarian transposition, shielding, and organ-at-risk dose constraints-provide only partial protection and offer limited control over temporal exposure or spatial confinement. These limitations underscore the need for delivery-enabled radioprotective systems capable of targeting the ovary with precision, synchronizing protection with radiation fractions, and minimiz
