Placental malaria is recognized as a common complication of malaria in pregnancy in areas of stable transmission, and, as a consequence, serious health problems arise for the mother and especially her baby [1]. Although malaria in pregnancy is a major factor associated with adverse perinatal outcome, the link between malaria and perinatal morbidity/mortality is less clear in areas with stable endemic malaria where pregnant women have acquired immunity [2]. Histological examination of the placenta is a predictor of fetal morbidity, as well as being the most sensitive detector of maternal infect

BACKGROUND: Malaria during first few months of life may be due to transplacental transfer of parasitized maternal erythrocytes. Although IgG and IgM antimalarial antibodies can be detected in maternal blood, only IgG antibodies are present in the infant's blood. These antibodies can delay and modify the onset of clinical manifestations.
CASE PRESENTATION: An infant is described who presented with irritability and feeding problems. Clinical examination and investigations revealed that the infant was afebrile, had jaundice, hepatosplenomegaly and haemolytic anaemia. Peripheral smear demonstrate

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Malaria in humans is caused by any of four species of intraerythrocytic protozoa of the genus Plasmodium (i.e., P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale, or P. malariae). These parasites are transmitted by the bite of an infective female Anopheles sp. mosquito. The majority of malaria infections in the United States occur among persons who have traveled to or from areas with ongoing malaria transmission. Hyper reactive malarial splenomegaly (HMS) is a relatively rare chronic complication of malaria. Previous name of the disease was Tropical splenomegaly syndrome (TSS). It is seen in endemic zone of malaria. In Bangladesh it is very rare. It is more prevalent in Africa, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand etc. It is due to abnormal immune response to malaria. Recently we got a typical case of HMS in our pediatric department of Community Based Medical College Hospital (CBMCH) Mymensingh. The patient, a seven years old boy came from Haluaghat, Mymensingh, which is a hyper endemic zone of malaria. The boy

The cardiotoxicity of halofantrine was a major concern during the past decade. Other old antimalarials (quinine, mefloquine, etc.) and more recent drugs may carry a similar risk. Studies of ventricular repolarization and myocardial cells can throw light on these adverse effects. Studies of QT dispersion measured on the surface electrocardiogram and of QT dynamicity and variability (QT/RR slope) during long-term Holter recording help to identify patients at risk of drug-induced ventricular arrhythmia. Such electrocardiographic investigations have shown that quinine, mefloquine and artemisinin d

There is paucity of data on the risk factors associated with congenital malaria in Nigeria. This study assessed the risk factors for congenital malaria in a population of neonates delivered at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, South Eastern Nigeria. It was a prospective cross-sectional study of neonates who were delivered in the institution from 2 April 2003 to 15 April 2004 as well as their mothers. Thick and thin blood films were made from maternal, baby and cord blood as well as the placenta for each mother/baby pair to determine malaria parasite density counts and for spe

Acute renal failure (ARF) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in children. It may be pre-renal, intrinsic, or post-renal (obstructive) in aetiology. ARF was investigated in children in the south-southern part of Nigeria to determine the prevalence, aetiology, management and outcome of ARF. A retrospective review of data from all children from birth to 16 years of age admitted into the Department of Paediatrics, University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), with the diagnosis of ARF over an 18 year period (January 1985 to December 2003) was performed. Information was obtai

Apicomplexa are unicellular, obligate intracellular parasites of great medical importance. They include human pathogens like Plasmodium spp., the causative agent of malaria, and Toxoplasma gondii, an opportunistic parasite of immunosuppressed individuals and a common cause of congenital disease (toxoplasmosis). They alone affect several hundred million people worldwide so that new drugs, especially for plasmodial infections, are urgently needed. This review will focus on a recently emerged, potential drug target, a plant-type redox system consisting of ferredoxin-NADP(+) reductase (FNR) and it

To assess potential effects of human DDT [1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethane] exposure, we evaluated the reproductive history of 2,033 workers in the antimalaria campaign of Mexico. Data on occupational exposure to DDT and reproductive outcomes were gathered through a questionnaire, and workers provided information about 9,187 pregnancies. We estimated paternal exposure to DDT before each pregnancy using three approaches: a) a dichotomous indicator for pregnancies before and after exposure began, b) a qualitative index of four exposure categories, and c) an estimation of the DDT met

This study was carried in New Halfa Hospital, eastern Sudan from October 1997 to February 2001. Twenty-eight pregnant Sudanese women infected with Plasmodium falciparum were treated with intramuscular artemether (six injections, 480 mg) after failure of chloroquine and quinine therapy. The patients were followed-up until delivery; the babies were followed-up until the age of 1 year. Artemether was given to one patient in the tenth week of gestation, to 12 during the second trimester, and to 15 during the third trimester. It was well tolerated, the parasitaemia was cleared and the patients were

A prospective clinical study in eastern Sudan described the efficacy and toxicity of quinine in early pregnancy in mothers with chloroquine-resistant falciparum malaria. Twenty-six pregnant Sudanese women in their first trimester (mean gestational age 8.5 weeks) were given quinine 10 mg/kg 3 times per day for 7 days and followed up every 2 weeks until delivery. One patient aborted (3.8%) and 2 patients (7.7%) experienced threatened abortion but delivered term babies. Recrudescence or re-infection was observed on day 21 in 1 patient. One baby died aged 6 months. There were no detectable congeni

Band 3 proteins, members of the anion exchange family of proteins (AE 0-3), are involved in a number of physiological activities such as cell volume and osmotic homeostasis, HCO3-/Cl- exchange, red cell aging, IgG binding and cellular removal, and the maintenance of the structural integrity of cells. They are present in the membranes of all cells and cellular organelles examined including Golgi, mitochondria and nuclei. The first polymorphisms of band 3 discovered were the asymptomatic band 3 Memphis variants carrying the Lys --> Gly substitution at position 56 in the cytoplasmic tail, and ban

A prospective study was carried out in an area of unstable malaria transmission in central Sudan to determine the efficacy and toxicity of quinine in pregnancy. Thirty-three pregnant women with severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria at mean 28.8 weeks gestational age were treated with quinine for 7 days. The mean body temperature on presentation for 3 patients who delivered prematurely was significantly higher than for those who delivered at term (39.2 +/- 0.7 degrees C versus 38.7 +/- 1.3 degrees C). There were no significant difference between the 2 groups in other clinical or biochemical para

OBJECTIVES: To examine the effect of low birth weight (LBW) and fetal anaemia (FA) on haemoglobin (Hb) patterns in infancy. To study the additional contribution of other risk factors known at birth. To examine the effect of iron supplementation during infancy on Hb levels.
METHODS: A stratified cohort of infants in Malawi (83 with LBW (< 2500 g), 111 with FA (cord Hb < 125 g/l), 31 with both LBW and FA, and 176 controls) was followed during infancy. Hb levels were measured at about 2, 4, 6, 9, and 12 months of age. Repeated measures models were used to describe the changes in Hb levels over t

Recently it was reported that 19.8% of the patients with rheumatoid factor, who had no previous history of malaria and had not visited endemic regions for at least the past five years, generated false-positive results in two rapid malaria tests that capture two different plasmodium antigens. This intriguing finding supports the hypothesis presented, suggesting systemic lupus erythematosus and possibly several other autoimmune diseases are caused by a scanty amount of persistent plasmodium parasites in the internal tissues, which provokes diverse autoantibodies production, and can be transmitte

Increasing tourism and growing numbers of immigrants from malaria-endemic countries are leading to a higher importation rate of rare tropical disorders in European countries. We describe, to the best of our knowledge, the first case of connatal malaria in Austria. The patient is the first child of a 24 year old mother who was born in Ghana and immigrated to Austria one and a half years before delivery. She did not stay in an endemic region during this period and did not show fever or any other signs of malaria. The boy was healthy for the first six weeks of his life. In the 8th week of life he

We report a case of neonatal malaria born in Spain. It is about a female newborn whose mother lived the first eight months of her pregnancy in Ecuatorial Guinea. Although our patient was well, in the third week of her life she developed fever mostly in mornings without any other symptoms except pallor. She kept a good physical state in any moment. In complementary proves we remark: anaemia and thrombocytopenia; as well Plasmodium falciparum ruin was found in blood smears. Treatment with mefloquine was successfully, blood smears was negative of parasites in the eighth day and hemogram was resto
