Cost-effectiveness of the hepatitis B birth-dose vaccine in South Africa: a mathematical modelling analysis.

BACKGROUND: In 2022, South Africa had an estimated hepatitis B prevalence of 4·7-6·0%. In an effort to eliminate viral hepatitis as a public health threat, a targeted (ie, selective) hepatitis B birth-dose vaccination (HepB-BD) policy was introduced in 2023. Under this policy, only infants born to mothers with confirmed hepatitis B positivity are eligible for HepB-BD, which is given in addition to peripartum antiviral prophylaxis (PAP) for mothers from the second or third trimester of pregnancy. This policy differs from the WHO recommendation that all newborns should receive a HepB-BD vaccine

Epidemiological assessment on birth outcomes among Marshallese migrants: a retrospective cohort study in the largest Marshallese community in the USA.

BACKGROUND: Marshallese migrants have experienced unique historical exposures related to nuclear testing, with potential implications for reproductive health. This study examined maternal and infant outcomes and birth defect prevalence among Marshallese individuals in Arkansas compared with Asian and other Pacific Islanders. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study using Arkansas vital records and birth defects surveillance data (2001-2020) assessed prenatal care, birth outcomes and major congenital anomalies. Adjusted prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% CI were estimated using Poisson regression.

CHARGE syndrome with hypothyroidism: a case report.

BACKGROUND: CHARGE syndrome (CS) is a rare genetic disorder caused by mutations in the chromodomain helicase DNA binding protein 7 (CHD7)gene. CS is characterized by a spectrum of disorders, including coloboma, heart malformations, atresia choanae, retarded growth and development, genital hypoplasia, and ear abnormalities and/or deafness. Additionally, some patients with CS may have some type of endocrine disorder, which affects their development. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 6-month-old female infant diagnosed with CS and congenital hypothyroidism (CH) who presented with various

D-- phenotype and anti-Rh17 alloimmunization: a comprehensive review of identification and clinical management.

The D-- phenotype is an exceptionally rare Rh blood group phenotype characterized by expression of D in the complete absence of C, c, E, and e. Individuals with this phenotype are at risk of developing anti-Rh17 (anti-Hr0), a clinically significant alloantibody that can severely complicate transfusion support and pregnancy management because compatible blood is exceptionally difficult to obtain. This review critically synthesizes the available published evidence regarding the D-- phenotype and anti-Rh17 alloimmunization, integrating data from case reports, case series, family investigations, a

Global, Regional and National Burden of Hemolytic Disease and Other Neonatal Jaundice, 1980/90-2021, and Projections to 2050: A Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn and other forms of neonatal jaundice remain important causes of morbidity and mortality among children under five worldwide. Despite improvements in prevention and treatment such as Rh screening, phototherapy, and exchange transfusion, the burden remains uneven across regions. This study assessed global, regional, and national trends in incidence, prevalence, mortality, Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), Years of Life Lost (YLLs), and Years Lived with Disability (YLDs) from 1980/1990 to 2021 using Global Burden of Disease (GB

EHA Guidelines on the management of children and adults with hemoglobin SC disease.

HbSC disease is the second most common type of sickle cell disease (SCD) in populations of African origin. Although it is often grouped together with other types of SCD, particularly sickle cell anemia (HbSS), it has unique pathophysiology and a different spectrum of laboratory and clinical features. Compared to HbSS, hemoglobin levels are higher, HbF is lower at less than 5%, and most vaso-occlusive and vasculopathic complications are less frequent, although retinopathy is more common. Despite these differences, there have been no specific guidelines on the management of HbSC disease. This cl

Lifespan variation during mortality transition in Bangladesh: evidence from a local surveillance and global estimates.

INTRODUCTION: Variation in life expectancy has become a critical dimension in understanding inequality in human populations, complementing average longevity by capturing how unequally years of life are distributed across individuals. Reducing such variation, especially by preventing premature mortality, has emerged as a key priority in global health and demographic research. For low- and middle-income countries, monitoring lifespan variation alongside life expectancy enables the detection of persistent mortality inequalities and uneven survival gains that average indicators alone may fail to r

Prevalence and factors associated with domestic accidents in children in the district of Orodara, Burkina Faso.

BACKGROUND: In West Africa, domestic accidents are generally underestimated, and only few scientific population-based studies have assessed their prevalence. When available, existing data often focus only a single type of accident. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of domestic accidents and their determinants among children aged 0-14 years in the Orodara health district in Burkina Faso. METHODS: We surveyed a fixed number of households across all 37 villages of the Orodara health district, Kénédougou Province, Burkina Faso. The dependent variable was the occurrence of a domestic ac

Associations of glyphosate exposure in pregnancy with preterm birth: a longitudinal birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Emerging data suggests that glyphosate, a non-selective herbicide, can influence reproductive health. We investigated associations of prenatal exposure to glyphosate and aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA), with preterm birth and its subtypes. METHODS: We used data from the NYU Children's Health and Environmental Study, a prospective birth cohort in New York City (2016-2019). Participants (n = 1450) provided urine samples at 4 to <18 weeks and 18 to 25 weeks gestation. Exposure was adjusted for creatinine and natural log transformed. End tidal carbon monoxide and significant hemolysis.

The American Academy of Pediatrics identified significant hemolysis as a significant neurotoxic risk factor for newborns with jaundice in its 2022 guideline for managing hyperbilirubinemia. The guideline recommends starting phototherapy at a lower level than otherwise if significant hemolysis is present. Currently, the optimal way to measure hemolysis is by determining an infant's level of end-tidal carbon monoxide corrected for ambient carbon monoxide (ETCOc). However, it is unclear what the optimal ETCOc level is for determining significant hemolysis. Given the differences in ETCOc levels am

ETHNIC DISPARITIES IN BIRTH WEIGHT AND PRENATAL CARE UTILIZATION IN ECUADOR, 2024.

Low birth weight is defined as a weight of less than 2,500 grams. It is one of the leading causes of infant morbidity and mortality; furthermore, in the long term, it contributes to the development of severe malnutrition, neurological disorders, respiratory complications, and immune deficiencies, as well as to increased costs for the national healthcare system. This is an observational, analytical, cross-sectional study. The data are drawn from the "Live Births 2024" administrative registry database, managed by Ecuador's National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC), covering the period f

Global, regional, national trends and economic evaluation of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia burden, 2003-2023.

Severe neonatal hyperbilirubinemia remains a preventable cause of neonatal death and lifelong neurologic disability, yet contemporary global estimates are limited. Using Global Burden of Disease 2023 data for 204 countries, we analyzed incidence, deaths, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) from extreme hyperbilirubinemia (EHB) among neonates from 2003 to 2023, applying joinpoint regression, income-stratified k-means clustering and correlation analysis, and value-per-statistical-life (VSL) and human-capital economic valuation. Globally, incident cases fell 29% (542,966-387,366) and death
