Young adult perspectives regarding receiving medically actionable gene testing results for newborns: A qualitative investigation.

In the United States, standard newborn screening identifies medically treatable conditions in about 1 in 300 newborns. The integration of whole genome sequencing (WGS) into newborn screening programs has the potential to identify a wide variety of medically actionable conditions. Yet, some scholars caution about disclosing medically actionable genes (MAGs) of children to their parents. Given that young adults are future parents, understanding their views on receiving MAGs results for newborns is as important as they are currently poorly understood. To address this gap, we explored young adult

Mortality and premature life lost from leukemia in China, 2005-2020: A study based on the National Mortality Surveillance System.

BACKGROUND: The "Healthy China 2030" initiative, which aims to achieve a 30% reduction in premature mortality by 2030, recognizes leukemia as the primary cause of cancer-related deaths. Given the limited previous research, providing comprehensive national and subnational estimates and temporal trends of the premature leukemia mortality burden from 2005 to 2020 is crucial. METHODS: Using data from various sources acquired through the national surveillance mortality system, estimates were derived and compared across 31 provincial-level administrative regions in the Chinese mainland, revealing t

Administration of Sodium Bicarbonate in Critically Ill Newborns: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: Metabolic acidosis is a frequent and serious complication in critically ill neonates, particularly preterm infants, and is associated with an increased risk of mortality, intraventricular hemorrhage, and long-term neurodevelopmental impairment. Despite limited evidence, sodium bicarbonate (SB) is widely administered in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) to correct acidosis, largely extrapolated from adult and pediatric practice. However, concerns have been raised about its potential adverse effects, including paradoxical intracellular acidosis, impaired cerebral autoregulation,

Child's disability status and postnatal healthcare utilization among forcibly displaced women in Pakistan: A Secondary data analysis.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that about half of maternal and 40% of neonatal deaths occur within 24 hours of childbirth. Many women and newborns, especially among forcibly displaced populations, lack timely access to essential care. While research has examined antenatal and postnatal care (PNC) utilization in low-resource settings, little is known about displaced women raising children with disabilities. This study explores factors influencing PNC utilization among forcibly displaced women in Pakistan, focusing on displacement, maternal health, and childhood impairment. Using

Designing inclusive newborn sequencing research: insights from parents in underrepresented communities.

BACKGROUND: It is essential that studies of genomic sequencing (GS) in newborns and children include individuals from under-represented racial and ethnic groups (URG) to ensure future applications are equitably implemented. We conducted interviews with parents from URG to better understand their perspectives on GS research, develop strategies to reduce barriers to enrollment, and facilitate research participation. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with 50 parents from URG. RESULTS: Nearly all parents said they would be interested in participating in an infant GS study. Parents were interes

The Role of Socio-Structural Factors in Influencing Feeding Intentions and Practices Among Mothers with Infants in Mthatha, South Africa.

Breastfeeding is universally regarded as the cornerstone of infant feeding, as it is the ideal infant feeding choice for optimal nutrition and development. Socio-structural factors of breastfeeding in child health play an important role in guiding women's decisions on options to feed their babies. A cross-sectional study was conducted among mothers with infants aged 0-6 months in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, with the aim of assessing the role of socio-structural factors in shaping feeding intentions and practices among mothers with infants. Written Informed consent was obtained in accordance with th

Food and Drug Administration Expert Panel on Infant Formula "Operation Stork Speed" June 2025: Part 3, Marketing of Infant Formulas, Breastfeeding Support, Hypoallergenic Formulas, and Nutrition for Preterm Infants.

The United States formula industry uses aggressive marketing strategies that exploit parental anxieties, undermine breastfeeding, and violate ethical international standards, all of which contribute to early formula introduction and disparities in breastfeeding. In addition, misleading or complex labeling contributes to caregiver and provider confusion regarding the content of formulas. A centralized, Food and Drug Administration-maintained database of infant formulas could support caregivers and healthcare professionals in countering misinformation and making evidence-based decisions. The Impact of Enteral Nutrition Type, Volume, and Time of Introduction on the Risk of Growth Failure and Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia in Preterm Infants.

Background/Objectives: Greater than 50% of surviving very preterm infants are affected by postnatal growth failure and are at high risk of associated development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Given the influence of enteral feeding on growth failure, we aimed to determine the impact of type, volume, and time of introduction of enteral feeds on mitigating the risk of postnatal growth failure and BPD risk. Methods: This was a retrospective chart review of mothers' own milk (MOM), pooled pasteurized donor human milk (PDHM) feeding, postnatal growth, and BPD severity in preterm infants <33 w

Postpartum Care for Parents of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Infants before and after Adoption of Telemedicine.

OBJECTIVE: Despite higher morbidity and mortality risks, parents of preterm infants miss postpartum visits more often than parents of full-term infants. Whether the introduction of telemedicine improved access to postpartum care among parents of infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is unknown. We aimed to compare postpartum visit attendance and care comprehensiveness for NICU parents before and after the option of telemedicine. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of postpartum parents without a history of hypertension who gave birth <32 weeks at two Philadelp

The effects of therapeutic drugs on brain development in infants with fetal growth restriction.

Fetal growth restriction (FGR) refers to a fetus that does not reach expected full growth, secondary to placental dysfunction and reduced oxygen and nutrient availability. FGR is associated with mortality or morbidity, including suboptimal brain development. Infants with FGR have reduced brain volume and diffuse, multicellular neuropathology that mediates neurological dysfunctions. In utero, reduced fetal oxygenation initiates a haemodynamic response to preferentially direct cardiac output towards the brain via cerebral vasodilatation, termed 'brain sparing'. This brain sparing response is sus

A Clinically Oriented Framework for Real-Time Heart Rate Variability Analysis: A Novel Approach To Personalized and Robust Monitoring.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a well-established, noninvasive measure of autonomic nervous system activity and is associated with clinical outcomes. Although real-time monitoring of HRV is valuable in clinical practice, its effectiveness is often compromised by major challenges: high inter-individual variability and frequent data contamination from procedural artifacts. To address these challenges, we developed and validated a computational framework for robust and personalized real-time HRV analysis oriented toward clinical application. The framework performs simultaneous analysis and visua

Modular tools for the analysis of pulmonary histological images: A pilot study on the differential thanatological diagnosis between born alive and stillbirth.

The determination of autonomous life signs in neonatal bodies is crucial in forensic practice, given its numerous legal implications. Current techniques, not individually exhaustive, often focus on verifying the occurrence of autonomous respiration, despite potential artifacts from decomposition and/or resuscitation efforts. This preliminary study proposes a novel technique for more accurate differential diagnosis by using modular tools to histologically analyze neonatal lungs. Lung sections, obtained from one fetal intrauterine death, two postnatal deaths due to intrapartum asphyxia, and one

Transfer of organic ultraviolet absorbers consumed by laying hens to various tissues in newborn chicks.

Some exogenous organic pollutants can be accumulated in animals and subsequently be transferred to their offspring. However, the accumulation and maternal transfer characteristics of organic ultraviolet absorbers (OUVAs) in terrestrial species remain poorly understood. This study investigated the accumulation of six OUVAs in domestic hens and their eggs, as well as the subsequent maternal transfer behaviors. Following continuous oral exposure to OUVAs, the average concentration and clearance half-life (33.0 days) of UV-327 were found to be higher than those of the other chemicals in target tis

Unroofed coronary sinus and persistent left superior vena cava: a rare neonatal venous anomaly.

Approach to abnormal cardiovascular signs in the early neonatal period is challenging due to delayed fetal adaptation, closure of the patent ductus arteriosus and physiological immaturity. We present a rare case of unroofed coronary sinus (UCS) with persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) in a term neonate who presented with recurrent desaturation episodes and persistent oxygen requirements. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) revealed this rare venous anomaly, which is mainly reported in the older population and primarily as an incidental finding. TTE with an agitated saline study was the

A decision-tree model to evaluate the impacts of workforce investments aimed at strengthening emergency obstetric and neonatal care (EmONC) facilities in Burundi.

INTRODUCTION: Human resources for health (HRH) in low- and middle income countries (LMICs) are often allocated irrationally based on normative policies that ignore service delivery patterns and health outcomes, failing to account for costs and expected benefits. To help Burundi rationalise scarce resources and tackle health system inefficiencies, we developed four workforce investment scenarios aimed at strengthening emergency obstetric and neonatal care (EmONC) facilities and predicted the costs and benefits associated with these investment proposals over the 2025-2030 timeframe. METHODS: We

The hemodynamic impact of congenital heart diseases during fetal-to-neonatal transition: an in-silico investigation.

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is a significant congenital anomaly, with ventricular septal defect (VSD) and transposition of the great arteries (TGA) being commonly encountered. Despite advancements in prenatal diagnosis and postnatal care, predicting neonatal outcomes remains difficult due to fetal compensatory mechanisms. This study utilizes and adapts existing mathematical models, without patient-specific parameters, to simulate the hemodynamic effects of VSD and TGA during the fetal-to-neonatal transition, validated against literature data. METHOD: The model uses a closed-loo
