Metagenomic next-generation sequencing enables early detection and outcome improvement in perioperative mucormycosis after liver transplantation: A single-center experience.

OBJECTIVES: Mucormycosis is a rapidly progressive and highly lethal fungal infection in liver transplant recipients, with early diagnosis remaining a major challenge. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical utility of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) for early detection and management of perioperative mucormycosis in adult liver transplant patients. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 539 adult patients who underwent liver transplantation between June 2022 and August 2025 at a single tertiary center. Nine patients with clinically confirmed perioperative mucormyco

Adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen combined with surgery and antifungal therapy for the management of soft tissue mucormycosis: a case report and review of the literature.

Soft tissue mucormycosis is a rare fungal infection that can develop on contaminated wounds. We report a case of Mucor circinelloides ankle infection in an immunocompetent man following a high-energy motorcycle accident, which has successfully been treated by surgery (multiple debridements, arthrodesis, soft tissue defect reconstruction with flap and skin graft), systemic antifungal therapy (initial liposomal amphotericin B followed by isavuconazole) and hyperbaric oxygen. This case highlights the therapeutic challenges and need for a multidisciplinary approach of such infection.

A Rare Case of Cutaneous Mucormycosis by Syncephalastrum Species in a Patient With Diabetes Mellitus: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Infections caused by Syncephalastrum species in humans are relatively rare. However, clinicians must maintain a high suspicion for it in immunocompromised patients with cutaneous mucormycosis. Prompt histopathological and microbiological investigations, combined with timely antifungal therapy and surgical intervention, are crucial to prevent subsequent complications and amputations.

Local amphotericin B for a neglected Rhizopus microsporus necrotizing soft tissue infection following crush syndrome: a case report.

Cutaneous mucormycosis is a highly fatal infection increasingly seen after severe trauma. We present a previously healthy 45-year-old man who developed an invasive Rhizopus microsporus infection following a haystack crush injury. Initially treated for crush syndrome and acute kidney injury (AKI), he developed distinct right temple necrosis on hospital day 13. Immediate debridement exposed bone involvement. Notably, standard serum (1,3)-β-D-glucan and galactomannan tests were non-contributory in this case and did not exclude mucormycosis. However, histopathology and targeted next-generation seq

Cutaneous mucormycosis confirmed using a Mucorales-specific monoclonal antibody: a case study.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a highly aggressive and destructive angio-invasive infection caused by fungi of the order Mucorales. Diagnosis currently relies on lengthy and insensitive culture of biopsy specimens, as well as time-consuming histopathological examination of tissue samples, which lacks specificity. CASE PRESENTATION: This case study describes an unusual presentation of cutaneous mucormycosis in an immunocompetent 49-year-old man following a traumatic farming injury to the hand. Despite appearing clinically well and having wounds that looked macroscopically clean after repeated deb

Cutaneous Mucormycosis Clinically Mimicking Necrotizing Fasciitis in a Patient Without Active Immunosuppression.

Cutaneous mucormycosis is a rare invasive fungal infection caused by fungi of the order Mucorales. Although it classically occurs in immunocompromised hosts, traumatic or minor cutaneous inoculation may result in infection even in patients without active immunosuppression. Because vascular invasion may lead to rapidly progressive necrosis, cutaneous mucormycosis can clinically resemble necrotizing soft-tissue infection. A 70-year-old man with a history of laryngeal carcinoma in remission and no active immunosuppressive treatment presented with 1 week of progressive pain, swelling, discoloratio

Clinical characterization of cutaneous mucormycosis in patients receiving Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy with Ibrutinib: A new case report and comparative discussion.

INTRODUCTION: Mucormycosis are invasive fungal infections caused by fungi of the order Mucorales that classically affect profoundly immunosuppressed patients. Recently, cases have emerged in patients receiving Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitors like Ibrutinib, used for chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). METHODS: We report a 58-year-old man with CLL on Ibrutinib and Venetoclax who developed a rapidly progressing necrotic ulcer on his leg after minor trauma. Histopathology revealed angioinvasive, non-septate hyphae; Rhizopus spp. was confirmed by culture. He was treated with surgical debridemen

Coronavirus disease 2019-associated mucormycosis and cytomegalovirus infection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a severe opportunistic fungal infection that has become a notable complication in patients recovering from coronavirus disease 2019, particularly in individuals with preexisting diabetes mellitus or a history of corticosteroid administration. Coinfection with cytomegalovirus in immunocompromised patients with coronavirus disease 2019 is increasingly documented yet remains insufficiently acknowledged. This case is significant owing to the uncommon simultaneous occurrence of cutaneous mucormycosis and cytomegalovirus infection in a post-coronavirus disease patient, un

"Adjunctive topical amphotericin B in post-transplant surgical-site mucormycosis in an immunocompromised diabetic patient: a case report".

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous mucormycosis is a rapidly progressive and often fatal fungal infection predominantly affecting immunocompromised hosts, with post-transplant patients being particularly vulnerable due to immunosuppressive regimens and metabolic derangements. Despite its high mortality, especially in the context of surgical-site involvement, optimal therapeutic strategies remain underexplored. We present a rare case of surgical-site mucormycosis in a renal transplant recipient with poorly controlled diabetes, successfully managed using adjunctive topical antifungal therapy, highlighting

Clinical Spectrum, Microbiological Characteristics, and Outcomes of Apophysomyces Infections in Immunocompetent Patients: A Case Series From North India.

BACKGROUND: Apophysomyces species are emerging etiological agents of mucormycosis, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. Unlike classical mucormycosis, which predominantly affects immunocompromised individuals, Apophysomyces infections frequently occur in immunocompetent hosts following traumatic implantation of fungal spores. OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical manifestations, microbiological characteristics, management strategies, and outcomes of Apophysomyces infections diagnosed at a tertiary care center in North India. METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conduc

Cutaneous mucormycosis in a patient with Hailey-Hailey disease (benign familial pemphigus) - first reported case.

This report describes a case of primary cutaneous mucormycosis in a patient with Hailey-Hailey Disease (benign familial pemphigus). The diagnosis of primary cutaneous mucormycosis was confirmed via microbiological culture as well as histopathology. Our patient improved with prompt surgical debridement and excision of infected, necrotic tissue with complementary antifungal therapy. To the best of our knowledge this is the first reported case of cutaneous mucormycosis in a patient with Hailey-Hailey Disease and contributes to the literature regarding pathophysiology, management and treatment for

Fatal Cutaneous Mucormycosis Initially Misdiagnosed as Necrotizing Fasciitis in an Uncontrolled Diabetic Patient: A Case Report Highlighting Diagnostic Delay.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a rare yet highly aggressive invasive fungal infection associated with significant mortality, particularly among patients with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. Early diagnosis remains challenging because its clinical presentation may closely mimic bacterial necrotizing soft tissue infections, particularly in critically ill patients, while conventional diagnostic tests such as potassium hydroxide (KOH) smear have limited sensitivity. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 64-year-old male with undiagnosed diabetes who presented with progressive decline in consciousness and e

Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Restore Standards in Medical and Dental Education in Pakistan.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Chronic cutaneous and mucosal mucormycosis: Rhizopus arrhizus as a major pathogenic fungus.

Chronic cutaneous mucormycosis is a rare condition distinct from the acute form, characterized by a prolonged, indolent course and varied clinical presentations. This study presents a 5-year experience from a tertiary dermato-mycology clinic, identifying six cases, the majority of whom were immunocompetent, with trauma history reported in four patients. The median duration from symptom onset to diagnosis was 60 months. The primary pathogens identified were Rhizopus arrhizus, Mucor variabilis, and Lichtheimia ramosa. Histopathological analysis demonstrated the absence of fungal angioinvasion, a

Violaceous Nodules on the Left Forearm of an Immunosuppressed Patient Following Heart Transplantation for Cardiac Amyloidosis.

We present the case of a 60-year-old immunocompromised man who presented with two pruritic pink-red indurated nodules with overlying scale and focal areas of ulceration on his left dorsal and left medial forearm, which evolved over a 2-month period. The pathology showed numerous fungal hyphae present that were pauci-septate with various branched angles and variable hyphal thickness. Fungal cultures grew Rhizopus species and a universal fungal PCR detected the Rhizopus oryzae complex. Based on the clinicopathologic correlation, the diagnosis of cutaneous mucormycosis was made. Management of a pediatric patient with rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis and cutaneous mucormycosis: a case report.

Mucormycosis is a highly invasive and rare opportunistic infection caused by mucor fungi, characterized by challenging diagnosis and rapid disease progression. It predominantly affects patients with compromised immune systems due to various reasons, such as kidney failure, long-term use of antibiotics or corticosteroids. We recently successfully treated a pediatric patient with rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis accompanied by severe cutaneous mucormycosis. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis nephritis accompanied by dermatophytosis i
