PURPOSE: Diabetes mellitus is recognised as a global health problem and has increasingly been associated with fungal infections, as an independent risk factor. Diabetic patients are predisposed to both superficial as well as invasive fungal disease, and account for substantial morbidity and mortality. Recent pandemic of COVID-19 underlined the global problem of mucormycosis, however, the burden of fungal infections among diabetics has a much broader horizon. This review aims to summarise the spectrum of fungal infections encountered among diabetic patients, along with elucidating immunopathoge

BACKGROUND: During the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic, there was surge in reporting of COVID-19-associated mucormycosis cases. Government of India declared rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis as a notifiable disease. Managing this condition posed a new challenge to clinicians. Management includes therapeutic drugs and aggressive surgical debridement. Even though prosthetic rehabilitation with zygomatic implants is one of the most conservative and effective options, owing to unpredictability of disease prognosis and financial burden for patients, rehabilitation with interim obturators is benef

Laryngeal mucormycosis is an uncommon form of fungal laryngitis that typically affects immunocompromised individuals. We report a rare such case in a male in his 40s who had recently recovered from severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus disease-19 (SARS CoV-2 infection-COVID 19) and presented with a 1-month history of worsening hoarseness, haemoptysis, and noisy breathing. A chewing gum-like subglottic necrotic mass was biopsied. The rarity of the diagnosis was aided by histopathological and microbial study of the mass, which confirmed mucormycosis. Management included surgical debulkin

Rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) is the most common manifestation of mucormycosis in uncontrolled diabetes and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). This infection is extremely aggressive, invading blood vessels and spreading quickly from the sinuses to the orbit and brain. We present a case of a 57-year-old male with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes who came to the hospital with facial swelling, blurry vision, and severe DKA. Imaging revealed orbital cellulitis, sinusitis with gas formation, and cavernous sinus thrombosis. He underwent an urgent lateral canthotomy and surgical debridement.

BACKGROUND: Invasive fungal sinusitis (IFS) profoundly impacts individuals with hematological malignancies, with rapid progression and high mortality rates. In an evolving therapeutic landscape, outcomes for patients with hematological malignancies who develop IFS warrant further evaluation.
METHODS: We performed a descriptive case series and retrospective review of patients with hematologic malignancies who developed proven IFS (per European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer/Mycoses Study Group criteria) between 2005 and 2024 at a tertiary academic center. Clinical data and o

A 34-year-old male with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus with a painful necrotic ulcer over the lateral tongue, an uncommon site for mucormycosis. Histopathology confirmed broad aseptate right-angle bronching hyphae consistent with primary lingual mucormyosis. Early surgical debridement, glycemic optimization, and liposomal amphotericin B resulted in favourable clinical recovery, highlighting the importance of prompt recognition of atypical oral lesions in immunocompromised patients.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is an invasive fungal infection associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Previous in vitro studies have demonstrated functional abnormalities in natural killer (NK) cells; however, it remains unclear whether circulating NK cell counts are altered in affected patients.
AIM: To assess baseline NK cell counts and explore their clinical associations in patients with mucormycosis treated at a tertiary referral hospital in Mexico City.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analytical study of hospitalized patients with active mucormycosis, as confirmed by dire

BACKGROUND: During and after the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) surge, a notable increase in mucormycosis was observed, particularly among individuals with metabolic and treatment-related vulnerabilities. Emerging evidence suggests that micronutrient disturbances may also influence susceptibility. This study evaluated clinical predictors and micronutrient patterns associated with mucormycosis in post-COVID-19 patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective case-control study was conducted at a tertiary care center, including 139 post-COVID-19 patients who underwent testing for Vitamin B

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Mucormycosis, a fungal infection, usually involves the rhino-orbital-cerebral cavities in immunocompromised patients. The upper limb is one of the most infrequent sites for mucormycosis infection.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a rare and atypical case of upper limb mucormycosis in an immunocompromised patient undergoing chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The diagnosis was confirmed through histopathological examination. Prompt and aggressive intervention - including extensive surgical debridement and intravenous antifungal therapy - led to the successf

We report the case of a 10-year-old male patient with bone marrow aplasia secondary to Fanconi anemia who was initially admitted for febrile purulent tonsillitis (no throat culture was performed before antibiotic initiation). Despite several courses of broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy, the clinical course was marked by persistent fever and progressive right-sided orbitofacial cellulitis. Imaging revealed extensive involvement of the right maxillary sinus with orbital extension. The appearance of a necrotic black palatal lesion (eschar) in the setting of profound immunosuppression is highly ch

PURPOSE: We report a diabetic patient with rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) and bilateral endogenous Aspergillus endophthalmitis post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection.
CASE REPORT: A 45-year-old man who had diabetes experienced vision loss and sought medical assistance. Prior to developing orbital symptoms, he had undergone intensive corticosteroid therapy for COVID-19. His uncorrected visual acuity was 20/20 in the right eye, but he had no light perception in his left eye. While hospitalized for ROCM, he developed endogenous endophthalmitis in his left eye, which was c

BACKGROUND: Spinal mucormycosis is an exceptionally rare form of invasive fungal infection, with fewer than 12 confirmed cases reported in the prior literature. Immunocompromised patients are disproportionately affected, and mortality exceeds 50% in this population. Chronic liver disease as a primary predisposing condition is underrepresented in the existing case series.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 54-year-old male with Child-Pugh Grade C chronic liver cirrhosis, diabetes mellitus, and hypothyroidism presented with progressive low back pain and bilateral lower limb weakness of one week duration. Lum

Pediatric infections caused by Cunninghamella bertholletiae (C. bertholletiae) are exceedingly rare with only few published case reports. Herein, we describe five cases of C. bertholletiae diagnosed and treated in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Patients. These cases indicated that pediatric C. bertholletiae infection presents with non-specific clinical features, is associated with high fatality, and frequently involves multiple anatomical sites, most commonly the lungs, demonstrating epidemiological patterns distinct from those observed in adults. From a diagnostic perspective, mNGS enables rap

We report a fatal case of a 40-year-old man who developed rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis complicated by central retinal artery occlusion, cavernous sinus thrombosis, and internal carotid artery occlusion. Mechanical thrombectomy was performed for the internal carotid artery occlusion, with subsequent Sanger sequencing of the fungal components within the retrieved thrombus to identify Rhizopus arrhizus. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report establishing the species-level identification of R. arrhizus in mucormycosis-associated large-vessel occlusion. These findings provide

BACKGROUND: Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a simple and reliable technique for diagnosing various inflammatory lesions. Some of these lesions are caused by fungal organisms, which are often missed clinically and thus remain untreated. Most of these infections require prompt diagnosis as they respond to early treatment, and delayed diagnosis may lead to unnecessary complications.
AIM: To study the clinico-cytomorphological spectrum of fungal infections in a tertiary care center.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study and includes a total of 25 cases of various fungal

Mucormycosis is a rapidly progressive opportunistic fungal infection predominantly affecting individuals with diabetes or immune compromise. To our knowledge, this report presents one of the first clinically documented cases of invasive Mucormycosis managed exclusively with an Ayurveda-based approach. A 60-year-old male with recent COVID-19 infection (CT severity score 7/25) presented with facial heaviness, lacrimation, and peripheral vision loss. Diagnostic evaluation confirmed invasive mucormycosis through potassium hydroxide testing, histopathology demonstrating vasculoinvasion, fungal cult

Background Brain abscess following sinonasal mucormycosis is a rare and life-threatening complication. Since our knowledge is mostly based on case reports, a well-documented way of treatment for such cases is yet to be found. Case Description A retrospective case series study was conducted at a tertiary hospital. Patients whose brain abscesses were treated without opening the dura during surgery were selected for the study. The patients received radical debridement of necrotic tissues as well as the infected bones adjacent to the brain abscess. Then, they were treated medically. Three patients
