Lateralized local circuit tuning in female mouse auditory cortex.

Most offspring are born helpless, requiring intense caregiving from parents especially during the first few days of neonatal life. For many species, infant cries are a primary signal used by parents to provide caregiving. Previously we and others documented how maternal left auditory cortex rapidly becomes sensitized to pup calls over hours of parental experience, enabled by oxytocin. The speed and robustness of this maternal plasticity suggests cortical pre-tuning or initial bias for pup call stimulus features. Here we examine the circuit basis of left-lateralized tuning to vocalization featu

Neonatal Sucrose and Internalizing Behaviors at 18 Months in Children Born Very Preterm.

IMPORTANCE: In the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), neonates born very preterm (<33 weeks' gestation) are exposed to great numbers of painful procedures, which is associated with more internalizing (anxiety and depressive) behaviors later in childhood. Oral sucrose is commonly used in NICUs to treat acute procedural pain and is effective in reducing behavioral responses, but the long-term associations between oral sucrose and child behaviors have not yet been examined. OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between cumulative neonatal pain and sucrose exposure in early life (prior to approxim

Effects of maternal depression and antidepressant treatment on neurotransmitters, brain regions, and mitochondrial function in rat dams.

Increasing evidence suggests that mothers experience stress before or during pregnancy, which can significantly impact their GABAergic system and lead to amygdala hyperactivity. While animal models are expected to reflect the above findings in humans, the current knowledge on the effects of chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) in rat dams remains insufficient. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the structural and neurochemical alterations in the dorsal hippocampus, specifically gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate (Glu) relative to total creatine (tCr), induc

Evaluation of parenting interventions for those with additional health and social care needs during pregnancy: THRIVE a multi-arm RCT with embedded economic and process components.

BACKGROUND: Women who have additional social and care needs in pregnancy (e.g. social adversity, maternal depression and anxiety) are likely to produce high levels of stress hormones. This has the potential to affect fetal brain development, increase infant reactivity to stress, and impair sensitive mother-infant bonds from developing. These in turn may have long-term effects on children's health, social and educational outcomes. Parenting interventions show promising improvements to child outcomes; however, there is little evidence of their efficacy in the UK. OBJECTIVE(S): THRIVE compared t

Prenatal Antidepressant Exposure and the Developing Brain: A Review of Neuroimaging Findings.

Antenatal mood disturbances are experienced by as many as 20% of pregnant mothers and are commonly treated with serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SRI) antidepressants. Both maternal depression and SRIs during pregnancy are associated with low birth weight and infant neurobehavioral disturbances, as well as longer-term impacts on child neurodevelopment, behavior, and mental health. As maternal depression and its pharmacotherapy are inherently interrelated prenatal exposures, distinguishing how these early life factors uniquely impact child development remains methodologically challenging. Over the

Antidepressant use during pregnancy and risk of obstetrics and neonatal outcomes: A propensity score-weighted population-based cohort study in 2003-2018.

Gestational antidepressant exposure may be associated with increased risks of adverse obstetric and neonatal complications, but many earlier studies inadequately addressed confounders and were conducted in Western countries. This population-based cohort study identified women aged 15-50 years who delivered first/singleton child in 2003-2018, using data from electronic health-record database of public healthcare services, with an aim to examine the risks of a comprehensive range of adverse obstetric and neonatal outcomes associated with gestational antidepressant use in a predominantly Chinese

Effect of gestational anemia on breastfeeding- a prospective follow-up -study.

BACKGROUND: Gestational anemia is a common pregnancy complication that affects approximately 40% of pregnant women globally. The health benefits of breastfeeding are widely acknowledged for both mothers and infants, and recognizing the factors that affect the duration and quality (exclusive / partial) of breastfeeding is therefore of great importance. METHODS: Women who participated in the FinnBrain Birth Cohort during 2011-2015 and whose hemoglobin levels were available in the third trimester (n = 1238) were included in this prospective study. The study group comprised women in the third tri

Cannabinoid overrides triggers of GABAergic plasticity in vestibular circuits and distorts the development of navigation.

Early life exposure to cannabis can result in long-lasting deficits in spatial navigation. We ask if the development of this behavior is subject to early life activity of type I cannabinoid receptor (CB1R) in the vestibular nucleus. In rodents, we found that local exposure to CB1R agonist within the first postnatal week, but not thereafter, led to a decline in the induction efficacy of long-term depression at GABAergic synapses (LTDGABA), a key step in the hard-wiring of vestibular circuits. Within this critical period, endocannabinoid-mediated LTDGABA at inhibitory neurons was selectively tri

Neonatal NLRP3 Inflammasome Activation Leads to Perineuronal Net Deficits in Early Adulthood.

Perineuronal nets (PNNs) are specialized extracellular matrix structures that surround certain neurons and play a critical role in protecting neurons from oxidative stress and maintaining synaptic stability in the central nervous system. They have roles in memory formation, and their loss has been linked to various mental alterations, such as anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia. While immune activation is known to degrade PNNs, it remains unclear whether inflammasomes are involved in PNN formation dynamics during neuronal development, where cases of sepsis are particularly high. In this stu

Impact on maternal mental health on infants development: A narrative review.

Mental health problems among expectant mothers and new mothers are important yet neglected health problems that significantly raise maternal and child morbidity and death in India. The mental health and well-being of parents have an impact on the growth and development of their children. Maternal depression during pregnancy and after delivery reduces the chance that a child survives since it signals that the baby will grow slowly and have a higher chance of developing diarrhea. More specifically, depression, one of the most common causes of disease-related limitation in women, not only impacts

Ibuprofen Does Not Prevent Inhibition of Fetal Breathing Movements Caused by Intrauterine Inflammation in Fetal Sheep.

Antenatal inflammation/infection is a major cause of neonatal apnoea and hypoventilation. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is a key inflammatory mediator associated with depression of fetal and neonatal breathing. We aimed to determine whether antenatal ibuprofen, a cyclooxygenase inhibitor that reduces synthesis of PGE2, restores fetal breathing movements (FBM) in late-gestation fetal sheep exposed to systemic lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Fetal sheep (125 days gestation, d; term ~148 d) were instrumentally monitored for continuous measurement of FBM and physiological parameters. At 130 d fetuses were ran

Mapping the effects of nurses' developmental care education on infants and families in a surgical neonatal intensive care unit: An observational study.

Developmental care (DC) mitigates the impact of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) stressors on infants and their families. However, the effect of variable exposure to DC-educated nurses on infant and parent outcomes remains unclear. Social network analysis (SNA), which maps relationships and interaction patterns, was used to evaluate the influence of nurse DC education in a surgical NICU (sNICU). In this prospective observational study, 45 infants >34 weeks' gestation, their parents, and sNICU nurses participated. We examined associations between nurse DC education levels and infants' behavi

Development and validation of the Mother's Socioemotional Support Circle (MSSC): A self-evaluation social support tool to guide social support efforts for preterm mothers in the NICU.

Emotional support from others plays a major role in a mother's ability to connect emotionally with her infant, particularly in the stressful context of preterm birth. Here, we document the development and validation of a novel assessment tool, the Mother's Socioemotional Support Circle (MSSC). The MSSC is a self-report instrument designed to assess the perceived availability and helpfulness of the mother's socioemotional support network. First reduced the number of items on the MSSC using methods based on item response theory and classical test theory. This analysis resulted in identifying 13

Beyond cognition: psychopathological sequelae of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.

BACKGROUND: Since the introduction of therapeutic hypothermia (TH) for neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), mortality and severe morbidity have been reduced, but follow-up studies have shown a high incidence of neuropsychological impairments. By contrast, the possibility of psychopathological vulnerability in children with HIE has not been clearly addressed. Our study aims to investigate the presence of psychopathological symptoms by comparing in the prepuberal period a sample of children with a history of neonatal HIE to a control group. METHODS: This is an observational cohort st

Mental Health in Pregnant Women with a History of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery: A Systematic Review of Depression, Anxiety, Eating Disorders, and Substance Use.

Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) effectively treats obesity in reproductive-age women and has been linked to improvements in pre-existing mental health conditions. However, during pregnancy, women with a history of MBS may still experience an increased risk of developing mental health issues, regardless of their status before surgery. This systematic review of seven studies, encompassing 4992 participants, revealed higher rates of antenatal depression (7.6%-38%) and anxiety (24.4%-64%) in post-MBS women. Marital status, psychiatric history, and weight loss were identified as contributing

The Role of the Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis in Perinatal Depression: Novel Insights for Treatment.

Perinatal depression, a prevalent mood disorder complicating pregnancy and childbirth, poses significant threats to maternal health and neonatal development. While psychotherapy and antidepressants constitute current standard treatments, their clinical application faces substantial limitations during pregnancy and lactation, including safety concerns, treatment resistance, and poor adherence rates. These therapeutic constraints have spurred growing interest in novel gut-brain axis (GBA)-targeted interventions. Emerging evidence suggests that the gut microbiota communicates with the brain throu

Dissecting human cortical similarity networks across the lifespan.

The human cortex exhibits remarkable morphometric similarity between regions; however, the form and extent of lifespan network remodeling remain unknown. Here, we show the spatiotemporal maturation of morphometric brain networks, using multimodal neuroimaging data from 33,937 healthy participants aged 0-80 years. Global architecture matures from birth to early adulthood through enhanced modularity and small worldness. Early development features cytoarchitecturally distinct remodeling: sensory cortices exhibit increased morphometric differentiation, paralimbic cortices show increased morphometr

Antenatal subpial hemorrhage diagnosed by fetal magnetic resonance imaging: imaging spectrum and autopsy findings.

Subpial hemorrhage is a rare intracranial hemorrhage typically described in neonates. We report the first prenatal diagnosis of subpial hemorrhage in a 28-year-old primigravida, defined on fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) by its hallmark cortical inward depression ("cortical buckling") and restricted diffusion on the apparent diffusion coefficient map, and later confirmed by autopsy. This case implicates intrinsic fetal factors-rather than birth trauma or neonatal asphyxia-in subpial hemorrhage pathogenesis and highlights the critical role of fetal MRI in distinguishing subpial hemorrhag

Early life adversity increases risk for chronic post-traumatic pain, data from humans and rodents.

Traumatic stress exposures (TSEs) are common in life. Although most individuals recover after a TSE, a substantial subset develop adverse post-traumatic neuropsychiatric sequelae such as chronic post-traumatic musculoskeletal pain (CPMP). Vulnerability factors for CPMP are poorly understood, which hinders identification of high-risk individuals for targeted interventions. One known vulnerability factor for many pain types is exposure to early life adversity (ELA), but few studies have assessed whether ELA increases risk for CPMP. This study used data from the Advancing Understanding of RecOver

Neonatal Handling Positively Modulates Anxiety, Sensorimotor Gating, Working Memory, and Cortico-Hippocampal Neuroplastic Adaptations in Two Genetically Selected Rat Strains Differing in Emotional and Cognitive Traits.

Background/Objectives: The bidirectional selection of the Roman low- (RLA) and Roman high-avoidance (RHA) rat strains for extremely slow vs. very rapid acquisition of the two-way (shuttle-box) avoidance response has generated two divergent phenotypic profiles: RHA rats exhibit a behavioural pattern and gene expression profile in the frontal cortex and hippocampus (HPC) that are relevant to social and attentional/cognitive schizophrenia-linked symptoms; on the other hand, RLA rats display phenotypic traits linked to increased anxiety and sensitivity to stress-induced depression-like behaviours.
