Patients with schizophrenia show progressive clinical deterioration. Brain abnormalities have been suggested in these patients, including enlargement of the lateral ventricles, increased cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) volume and reductions in the frontal and temporal lobes. CSF flow pathology is a central factor in the development of many neurological disorders, but much less is known about the role of CSF flow dynamics in schizophrenia. In this study, parameters of CSF flow dynamics at the aqueduct level of 50 schizophrenic patients were compared to those of 50 controls using phase-contrast cine m

Hydrocephalus is a neurological disorder with an incidence of 80-125 per 100,000 live births in the United States. The molecular pathogenesis of this multidimensional disorder is complex and has both genetic and environmental influences. This review aims to discuss the genetic and molecular alterations described in human hydrocephalus, from well-characterized, heritable forms of hydrocephalus (e.g., X-linked hydrocephalus from L1CAM variants) to those affecting cilia motility and other complex pathologies such as neural tube defects and Dandy-Walker syndrome. Ventricular zone disruption is one

Vein of Galen malformation (VOGM) is a fistulous arteriovenous malformation presenting in the early childhood. Hydrocephalus with VOGM develops in one half of patients during the course of the disease. The concept of hydrodynamic disorders is the key to understand the development of hydrocephalus. VOGM results in venous hypertension that secondarily disturbs cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) absorption leading to hydrocephalus and occurs frequently in infants and young children. The medullary veins are thought to be the main pathway for absorption of CSF by the cerebrofugal gradient act as the driving

Wiedemann-Steiner syndrome (WWS) is a rare disorder characterized by hypotonia, postnatal growth restriction, striking facial dysmorphism, and hirsutism. It is caused by heterozygous pathogenic variants in KMT2A. This gene has an established role in histone methylation, which explains the overlap of WWS with syndromes caused by genes involved in chromatin remodeling. We describe an infant with a novel single base pair deletion in KMT2A with features consistent with WWS, as well as additional features of stenosis of aqueduct of Sylvius and broad toes. The usefulness of Face2Gene as a tool for i

Developmental venous anomaly (DVA) is the most common type of intracranial vascular malformation. These lesions are benign and are considered to be non-pathological variants of normal deep parenchymal veins. Although most of them are asymptomatic, a small subset of them located in aqueductal region have been reported to cause obstructive hydrocephalus. The authors present an interesting case of biventricular hydrocephalus secondary to a DVA located on the proximal aqueduct in an adolescent patient. This case is discussed with in corroboration with current literature and management recommendati

A 25 year-old Nigerian woman with aquaporin-4 antibody-positive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) presented with a 6 week history of nausea, vomiting, and refractory hiccups; as well as progressive lower extremity sensory loss, weakness, saddle anesthesia, and urinary incontinence. She had experienced her first NMOSD relapse seven years prior with bilateral lower extremity weakness and area postrema syndrome. After pulse steroids and plasma exchange she made a complete neurologic recovery and was started on azathioprine. An initial aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibody ELISA test was positi

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 10-month-old neutered male mixed breed dog was presented for assessment of poorly controlled seizures.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain disclosed complete absence of the lateral and third ventricles and mesencephalic aqueduct. Postmortem computed tomographic (CT) imaging and positive contrast cisterno-ventriculography confirmed the lack of a contiguous ventricular system. However, histopathology identified the presence of vestigial lateral and third ventricles with hypoplastic choroid plexus, atresia of the third ventricle, and fused thalami, cons

BACKGROUND: Congenital hydrocephalus is a descriptive diagnosis of symptoms, that are present for numerous reasons, including chromosomal disorders, genetic mutations, intrauterine infection and hemorrhage, amongst other factors. Mutation of L1CAM gene is the most frequent cause of congenital hydrocephalus, contributing to approximately 30% of X-linked congenital hydrocephalus.
METHODS: In the present study, we used whole-exome sequencing and Sanger sequencing to investigate an aborted male fetus present with severe congenital hydrocephalus at 24 weeks of gestation, whose mother had a history

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Sickle cell trait (SCT) has reproductive implications and can rarely cause health problems. SCT counseling improves parent knowledge but is infrequently received by children with SCT compared with children with cystic fibrosis carrier status. There are no national guidelines on SCT disclosure timing, frequency, or counseling content. Parents' experiences with SCT disclosure and counseling are poorly understood but could inform the development of guidelines. We explored parents' experiences with and desires for SCT disclosure and counseling for their infants with SCT i

Air-bone gaps (ABGs) are commonly found in patients with conductive or mixed hearing loss generally due to outer- and/or middle-ear diseases such as otitis externa, tympanic membrane perforation, interruption or fixation of the ossicular chain, and chronic suppurative otitis media. ABGs can also be found in correlation with inner-ear disorders, such as endolymphatic hydrops, enlarged vestibular aqueduct syndrome, semicircular canal dehiscence, gusher syndrome, cochlear dehiscence, and Paget disease's as well cerebral vascular anomalies including dural arteriovenous fistula. The typical clinica

Enlarged vestibular aqueduct syndrome (EVAS) is the most common congenital ear anomaly that causes sensorineural hearing loss in children and may predispose a child to sudden hearing loss from sudden pressure changes or minor head trauma. We report a case of a 4-year-old boy with a history of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt and migraines who presented to the emergency department with parental and child care provider reports of acute hearing loss, without a history of trauma, infection, or hardware malfunction, who was diagnosed with bilateral EVAS. Diagnosis of EVAS occurs with specific temporal

BACKGROUND: Misoprostol is often used for termination of pregnancy in France and other countries. However, some pregnancies are continued after taking the drug and congenital malformations are known to be the consequence of fetal exposure to misoprostol, among them hydrocephalus. The type of hydrocephalus in case of misoprostol exposure is not known.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the first case in the literature of an obstructive hydrocephalus due to an aqueduct of Sylvius stenosis diagnosed during pregnancy after misoprostol intake.
CONCLUSIONS: The possible physiopathologic implications of t

We present a case of symptomatic intracranial hypotension secondary to CSF overdrainage from a cystoperitoneal shunt system. Brain MRI shows distortion of the midbrain with secondary occlusion of the cerebral aqueduct resulting in obstructive hydrocephalus. The symptoms, brainstem herniation, and hydrocephalus resolved after tie occlusion of the shunt.

INTRODUCTION: X-linked recessive mutations predominantly affect male fetuses with milder or no abnormalities in female siblings. Most reports show only one affected member in the family. We are reporting a family affected with hydrocephalus, stenosis of the aqueduct of Sylvius, dysgenesis of the corpus callosum, and Xp22.33 microduplication.
CASE PRESENTATION: Eighteen-year-old patient was evaluated for her 2 pregnancies; the first was a male fetus with severe hydrocephalus and the second a female fetus with mild hydrocephalus. Postnatal MRI evaluation of the male neonate revealed stenosis of

BACKGROUND: Ventriculoatrial shunt (VA) insertion is one of the possible surgical procedures to treat hydrocephalus. However, it is also associated with several complications such as obstruction and shunt infection as well as life-threatening complications like intraatrial thrombus or thrombosis on the distal catheter. In this case report, we share a rare case of a patient with a VA shunt, who was admitted to our hospital with a stroke.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 56-year-old female patient with suspected acute stroke was admitted to the stroke unit. CT and MRI scans showed multiple cerebral infarcti

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a genetically heterogeneous disorder affecting normal structure and function of motile cilia, phenotypically manifested as chronic respiratory infections, laterality defects and infertility. Autosomal recessive mutations in genes encoding for different components of the ciliary axoneme have been associated with PCD in humans and in model organisms. The CCDC151 gene encodes for a coiled-coil axonemal protein that ensures correct attachment of outer dynein arm (ODA) complexes to microtubules. A correct arrangement of dynein arm complexes is required to provide
