A Single-Center Retrospective Review of Perioperative Complications and Reoperation Rates Between Open Cranial Vault Remodeling and Distraction Osteogenesis for Unilateral Coronal Craniosynostosis.

BACKGROUND: Unilateral coronal craniosynostosis (UCS) is the third most prevalent form of craniosynostosis. Traditional treatment of UCS has been achieved with fronto-orbital advancement and cranial vault remodeling (FOAR), but utilization of cranial distraction osteogenesis (DO) techniques has increased. This study aims to compare perioperative complications and reoperation trends in FOAR versus DO techniques at a single institution. METHODS: An Institutional Review Board-approved retrospective review was performed from January 1999 to November 2018 at a single institution. Patients were tho

Multiple Arterial Vascular Anomalies in the Periorbital, Paranasal, and Intracranial Spaces Treated With Systemic Bevacizumab.

Arteriovenous malformations of the orbit are rare congenital hamartomas defined by a direct connection between the arterial and venous systems without an intervening capillary bed. Treatment can be challenging, as these lesions are anatomically complex, often involve multiple locations, and have a tendency to recur. A multidisciplinary approach is typically required, involving endovascular and surgical teams. The authors present a case of a 33-year-old man with a complex, recurrent orbital arteriovenous malformations in the context of wider head and neck vascular anomaly syndrome involving the

Anthropometric Study of Human Ear: A Baseline Data for Ear Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Creation of an auricular framework plays the main role on first stage of microtia reconstruction. The size of framework is determined based on the size of the contralateral healthy ear and customized with Nagata theory. The height of rib that added behind the previous framework is the same with the projection of the normal ear. But the height of rib needed and framework in bilateral cases is unknown. A population based auricular framework pattern and projection are urgently needed. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed at determining the mean values of normal anthropometric measurement of

Clinical and genetic findings in patients with congenital cataract and heart diseases.

BACKGROUND: Congenital cataract (CC) and congenital heart disease (CHD) are significant birth defects. In clinical practice, the concurrence of CC and CHD is frequently observed in patients. Additionally, some monogenic diseases, copy number variation (CNV) syndromes, and diseases associated with intrauterine infection involve both cataract and heart defects. However, little is known about the association between CC and CHD. Here, we characterised the demographic, clinical, and genetic features of patients with CC and heart defects. METHODS: Medical records for 334 hospitalised patients diagn

Photogrammetric evaluation of corrective surgery for trigonocephaly.

The aim of this study was to capture preoperative, postoperative, and follow-up head shapes of male trigonocephaly patients who underwent fronto-orbital remodelling (FOR), using three-dimensional (3D) photography. Fifty-seven male infants with metopic synostosis operated on using standardized FOR during a 5-year period were included. All measurements were compared with those of an age-matched healthy control cohort (n = 253 for early postoperative comparison, n = 43 for the 1-year follow-up comparison) to determine the effect of FOR at 14 days and at 1 year post-surgery. Intracranial volume, f

Galactokinase deficiency: a treatable cause of bilateral cataracts.

Congenital cataract can be caused by several systemic diseases and differential diagnosis should be done between infections, genetic or metabolic diseases. We present a case of a 12-month-old girl with bilateral nuclear cataracts that was referred for investigation. Since she did not present a family history of congenital cataracts or metabolic diseases, and her physical examination was normal, a systemic evaluation was performed. Biochemical studies disclosed abnormal galactose metabolism signs. The diagnosis of galactokinase (GALK1) deficiency was considered and the study of the GALK1 gene a

Genome sequencing in congenital cataracts improves diagnostic yield.

Congenital cataracts are one of the major causes of childhood-onset blindness around the world. Genetic diagnosis provides benefits through avoidance of unnecessary tests, surveillance of extraocular features, and genetic family information. In this study, we demonstrate the value of genome sequencing in improving diagnostic yield in congenital cataract patients and families. We applied genome sequencing to investigate 20 probands with congenital cataracts. We examined the added value of genome sequencing across a total cohort of 52 probands, including 14 unable to be diagnosed using previous

Kahook Dual Blade Ab-interno Trabeculectomy Compared With Conventional Goniotomy in the Treatment of Primary Congenital Glaucoma: 1-Year Results.

INTRODUCTION: Kahook dual blade (KDB) removes a strip of the trabecular meshwork from the angle, which may make it superior to simple goniotomy in treating the angle anomaly in primary congenital glaucoma (PCG). This prospective study compares KDB ab-interno trabeculectomy to conventional goniotomy in PCG. METHODS: Forty-two eyes of 29 patients with PCG underwent ab-interno trabeculectomy using a KDB or conventional goniotomy using a 25-G irrigating needle, targeting 100 to 120 degrees of the nasal iridocorneal angle. Patients were seen at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. Success was d
