Gastrointestinal manifestations in diploid/triploid mixoploidy.

A girl infant was delivered by cesarean section at 32 weeks of gestation because of growth arrest and poor movement patterns. The infant had feeding problems, which were based on gastroesophageal reflux, laryngomalacia, and decreased gut motility. Hypotonia was notable from the outset, and the patient eventually displayed significant delays in both motor and cognitive milestones. Meanwhile, lymphocytes had yielded a normal karyotype (46,XX), but at 2 years of age the patient underwent a skin biopsy and mosaicism because a 68,XX cell line was discovered in fibroblasts. At the age 6.4 years, the

Dysmorphologic assessment in 115 Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser patients.

Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) patients are characterized by congenital aplasia of the uterus and the upper part of the vagina, with normal secondary sexual characteristics. This disorders affects one in 4000-5000 females and it is classified as typical, type I or isolated, and as atypical, type II, manifesting additional malformations. To date, no specific study has addressed the question of facial features in MRKH patients. The aim of this study is to perform a dysmorphological assessment of a large cohort of patients. We studied 115 women referred to our center from 2008 to 2012. Sev

Thoracolumbar Arachnoid Cyst with Horner Syndrome: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Horner syndrome (HS) results from the interruption of sympathic pathway, and the patients have a group of signs including miosis, ptosis, enophthalmos, and anhydrosis. While HS is mainly caused by cervical sympathetic nerve injury such as sympathetic chain tumor, we report here a HS case caused by a thoracolumbar arachnoid cyst. Imageological examination showed the cyst existed in spinal canal from the T11 to L3 level, which was further confirmed by operation. The tumor attacked the lateral margin of intervertebral foramen at certain stages. In MRI scan, no abnormality was found in the patient

Suspension surgery with autogenous fascia lata via a less invasive modification of the Crawford method on 85 patients with congenital severe eyelid ptosis.

BACKGROUND: Autogenous fascia lata is considered the gold standard for frontalis suspension surgery to correct severe congenital upper eyelid ptosis. METHODS: This study evaluated the efficacy of a less invasive modification of the standard technique described by Crawford. A total of 85 patients with severe congenital ptosis were enrolled in this study and submitted to surgical correction by frontalis suspension using autogenous fascia lata. Among these patients, 51 had previously undergone ptosis correction using other surgical techniques. The final lid level and contour were evaluated in ad

Congenital upper eyelid coloboma: embryologic, nomenclatorial, nosologic, etiologic, pathogenetic, epidemiologic, clinical, and management perspectives.

PURPOSE: To review the recent literature and describe the authors' experience with congenital upper eyelid coloboma. METHODS: In this review, we will summarize the embryologic and etiopathogenetic bases of congenital upper eyelid coloboma, and study the published clinical reports. We will also attempt to briefly shed some light on the rarer syndromic curiosities associated with upper eyelid coloboma. RESULTS: Congenital upper eyelid colobomas are one of the few nontraumatic oculoplastic emergencies that may occasionally present in the first few days of life with a corneal ulcer and may even

DYSKERATOSIS CONGENITA IN TWO ETHIOPIAN BROTHERS.

Dyskeratosis congenita (DKC) is a rare, progressive bone marrow failure syndrome that is characterized by the triad of reticulated skin pigmentation, nail dystrophy and oral leukoplakia. Current evidence indicates that DKC is a disease of defective telomere maintenance, ribosome deficiency and protein synthesis dysfunction. Mortality is often associated with bone marrow failure (BMF), development of malignancy and other multisystem complications of the disease. Here we report two Ethiopian brothers with classical signs and symptoms of DKC. The characteristic clinical features, laboratory findi

Stab Wound in the Skull Treated with a Medial Supraorbital Craniotomy Through an Incision in the Eyebrow-a Minimally Invasive Approach.

BACKGROUND: The surgical management of osteoporotic pelviacetabular fractures poses distinct challenges due to poor screw purchase, severe comminution of fractures, and the inability to perform prolonged surgeries in patients with significant comorbidities. These fractures necessitate tailored modifications in surgical approaches, implant selection, and techniques based on the patient's overall health, fracture complexity, and bone quality. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed and Google Scholar databases to identify relevant articles on the management of oste

Ankyloblepharon filiforme adnatum: report of two cases.

Ankyloblepharon filiforme adnatum (AFA) is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by partial or complete adhesion of upper and lower eyelids, usually seen as an isolated finding but often associated with other anomalies or a well-defined syndrome. We report two cases of AFA who presented at a tertiary eye care center of West Bengal. Family history of consanguinity was absent. One baby had abnormal tuft of hair over the small of the back. No other congenital abnormalities were detected in any of them. The adhesions of the eyelids were divided by a number 15 blade after crushing with mosquito f

Co-occurrence of congenital hydronephrosis and FOXL2-associated blepharophimosis, ptosis, epicanthus inversus syndrome (BPES).

Blepharophimosis, ptosis, epicanthus inversus syndrome (BPES) is an autosomal dominantly inherited congenital malformation of the eyelids. Diagnostic criteria include blepharophimosis, ptosis, epicanthus inversus and telecanthus. Type І BPES has additional features of premature ovarian failure and female infertility, while type ІІ occurs isolated. We report a two-year old male child with typical features of BPES and bilateral congenital hydronephrosis. The child, first-born to non-consanguineous parents, presented to us with hypertension. Congenital hydronephrosis and reduced renal function we

[Epidemiological investigation of fascioliasis and analysis of a chronic human fascioliasis case in Binchuan County, Yunnan Province].

From February to March 2014, six natural villages in Zhoucheng Town, Binchuan County of Yunan Province, were randomly selected by cluster sampling. Serum anti-fascioliasis IgG was detected by ELISA. The sero-positive individuals were further tested for Fasciola infection using sediment detection with nylon bag (260 meshes) and Kato-Katz method. Among 1207 sampled persons, the sero-positive rate was 3.0% (36/1207). The rate in males and females was 2.3% (12/530) and 3.6% (24/677) (u=1.46, P>0.05). The sero-positive rate in Zhoucheng Village and Baizhuang Village was 4.0% (24/616) and 2.0% (12/5

Delayed Endovascular Coil Extrusion following Internal Carotid Artery Embolization.

Internal carotid artery injury is a rare and devastating complication of endoscopic sinus and skull base surgery that has an associated mortality rate of 15%. This case describes a patient who developed massive epistaxis following routine sinus surgery and was eventually diagnosed with a pseudoaneurysm of the cavernous internal carotid artery. Endovascular coiling and Onyx (Covidien, Irvine, California, United States) liquid embolization were ultimately used to completely occlude the internal carotid artery with resolution of bleeding; however, the patient had an unexpected late complication o

Serial reconstruction of anophthalmic orbits with 'bag-shaped' flaps.

BACKGROUND: The author's goal was to present an approach for serial surgical reconstruction of anophthalmic orbits with 'bag-shaped' flaps and cartilage transplantation. METHODS: A review was performed of 53 patients who underwent serial physiological orbital reconstruction between 2006 and 2013. Orbital reconstruction was performed serially in stages, including "bag-shaped" flap transplantation, medial and lateral canthoplasty, tarsus reconstruction, and improvement of the strength of the levator palpebrae superior muscles. Curative effects were evaluated by the surgeons and patients jointly

Etiology of craniofacial malformations in mouse models of blepharophimosis, ptosis and epicanthus inversus syndrome.

Blepharophimosis, ptosis, epicanthus-inversus syndrome (BPES) is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder characterized by narrow palpebral fissures and eyelid levator muscle defects. BPES is often associated to premature ovarian insufficiency (BPES type I). FOXL2, a member of the forkhead transcription factor family, is the only gene known to be mutated in BPES. Foxl2 is essential for maintenance of ovarian identity, but the developmental origin of the facial malformations of BPES remains, so far, unexplained. In this study, we provide the first detailed account of the developmental processes l

Three different ophthalmic presentations of juvenile xanthogranuloma.

Three cases of juvenile xanthogranuloma from two ophthalmology departments were reviewed. Clinical histories, ophthalmic examination, physical examination, investigations, and treatment of these cases are described. A 4-month-old boy presented with spontaneous hyphema and secondary glaucoma. He was treated with intensive topical steroid and anti-glaucomatous eye drops. The hyphema gradually resolved and the intra-ocular pressure reverted to 11 mm Hg without any other medication. Biopsy of his scalp mass confirmed the diagnosis of juvenile xanthogranuloma. A 31-month-old boy presented with a li
