High frequency of CHD7 mutations in congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.

Congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (CHH) is characterized by lack of normal pubertal development due to deficient gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion or action, and is caused by genetic defects in several genes. Mutations in the CHD7 gene cause CHARGE syndrome (Coloboma of the eye, Heart defects, Atresia of the choanae, Retardation of growth and development, Genital hypoplasia and Ear abnormalities), but have also been found in patients with isolated CHH. The aim of this study was to identify CHD7 mutations in patients with CHH. Fifty Portuguese patients with CHH were screene

Retained tooth in the nasal cavity: a rare cause of nasal congestion.

A 59-year-old man presented with unilateral nasal congestion and discharge. Clinical examination revealed a mass in the floor of the nasal cavity. Sinus CT indicated a retained tooth or a dermoid cyst. It was removed by endoscopic surgery. Histology confirmed the diagnosis of a retained tooth. At follow-up, the patient reported no nasal symptoms. A retained nasal tooth is rare, and the symptoms are variable. It can resemble other diseases such as chronic rhinosinusitis. Surgical removal is recommended to confirm the diagnosis and eliminate symptoms.

Evolution of the phenotype of craniosynostosis with dental anomalies syndrome and report of IL11RA variant population frequencies in a Crouzon-like autosomal recessive syndrome.

In 2011, biallelic loss-of-function variants in the interleukin receptor 11 alpha gene IL11RA were found to be associated with a Crouzon-like craniosynostosis syndrome with associated dental anomalies (CRSDA). Since then, a total of 41 similar patients have been reported with IL11RA variants. We report two adult brothers diagnosed with Crouzon syndrome as children, in which the clinical diagnosis of CRSDA was made on reevaluation. Laboratory testing detected biallelic IL11RA variants, c.916_924dup (p.Thr306_Ser308dup) and c.781C > T (p.Arg261Cys), both of which have now been reported in other

Auricular prostheses attached to osseointegrated implants: multidisciplinary work-up and clinical evaluation.

PURPOSE: Not long after the introduction of osseointegrated implants outside the oral cavity, auricular prostheses are retrained on osseointegrated implants. New insights have been gained with the next-generation percutaneous osseointegrated titanium implants for bone conduction hearing since its introduction in 2010. As a result, the same technology was introduced in the Vistafix® system (VXI implant) to retain auricular prostheses. The aim of this study is to evaluate the surgical procedure, clinical outcome, and satisfaction of the patient of osseointegration-retained auricular prosthesis u

Role of ectodysplasin signalling in middle ear and nasal pathology in rat and mouse models of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

Patients with mutations in the ectodysplasin receptor signalling pathway genes - the X-linked ligand ectodysplasin-A (EDA), the receptor EDAR or the receptor adapter EDARADD - have hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED). In addition to having impaired development of teeth, hair, eccrine sweat glands, and salivary and mammary glands, HED patients have ear, nose and throat disease. The mouse strains Tabby (EdaTa ) and downless (Edardl-J/dl-J ) have rhinitis and otitis media due to loss of submucosal glands in the upper airway. We report that prenatal correction of EDAR signalling in EdaTa mice

Wideband tympanometry findings in inner ear malformations.

OBJECTIVE: The deficits in the cochlea which is at the one end of the ear sound transfer system, may effect middle ear functions. Wideband typanometry (WBT) is frequently used to evaluate these transfer functions which play a crucial role in setting the impedance matching between the external ear and the cochlea. To this end, the aim of this study was to investigate the ear transfer functions in inner ear malformations via WBT, and to question whether these functions change depending on the types of inner ear malformation. METHODS: This prospective case-control study was conducted in a univer

"Endolymphatic sac tumour": A case report with review of literature.

Endolymphatic sac tumour (ELST) is a non-metastasizing low grade adenocarcinoma of endolymphatic sac origin. It is also known as Heffner tumour, low grade adenocarcinoma of endolymphatic sac origin and aggressive papillary middle ear tumour. These tumours are closely associated with Von Hippel Lindau (VHL) disease. Here we report a case of Endolymphatic sac tumour in a 63 yr old lady who presented with left sided facial palsy. Since the tumour was highly vascular and required preoperative embolization, initial clinicoradiological diagnosis was Jugulotymphanic paraganglioma. Histopathology show

Pulsatile tinnitus due to an aneurysmatic diverticulum of the jugular bulb treated with the Woven EndoBridge device.

Tinnitus is a common symptom with an incidence of 4-20%. Pulsatile tinnitus represents a minor subgroup of less than 10% of all patients suffering from tinnitus. Pulsatile tinnitus - different from permanent mostly idiopathic tinnitus is mainly caused by physical sources related to vascular pathologies resulting in a change in blood volume and pressure or an alteration of the vessel lumen. Differential diagnosis for pulsatile tinnitus include dural arteriovenous fistulas, glomus tumors of the jugular foramen and the middle ear or atherosclerotic diseases of the carotid artery in the petrous or

Neuroimaging findings in Emanuel Syndrome.

Emanuel syndrome is a rare inherited chromosomal abnormality caused by an unbalanced translocation of chromosomes 11 and 22. Clinically, Emanuel syndrome is characterized by a wide spectrum of congenital anomalies, dysmorphisms, and developmental disability often confused with other similar syndromes. Outside of genetic testing, diagnosis remains challenging and current literature on typical radiologic findings is limited. We present classic neuroimaging findings of Emanuel syndrome consistent with prior literature including microcephaly, microretrognathia, external auditory canal stenosis, an

Annual hearing screening in girls with Turner Syndrome: Results from the first three years in Glasgow.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is prevalent in girls with Turner Syndrome (TS). A number of cross-sectional studies have confirmed that conductive hearing loss due to middle ear disease and permanent, progressive sensorineural hearing loss are both very common and often unrecognised in TS. Hearing screening has been suggested by many authors and is recommended in some recent national audiology guidelines (every 3-5 years in an international consensus statement, every 1-2 years in the USA and every year in the UK). The effectiveness of such regular hearing screening has not been assessed before. STU
