Maternally Inherited Atypical 22q11.2 Microduplication Presenting with Unilateral Microtia and Aural Atresia: A Case Report of Evidence for an Association with Severe Ear Malformations.

INTRODUCTION: 22q11.2 Microduplication syndrome is a genomic disorder characterized by extreme phenotypic variability and reduced penetrance. While minor ear anomalies are common, severe malformations like microtia and aural atresia are rarely reported. We present a unique case of maternally inherited 22q11.2 microduplication with severe external ear defects but superior neurodevelopment. CASE PRESENTATION: A male neonate was diagnosed with a 2.7-Mb atypical proximal 22q11.1-q11.21 duplication involving 0.7-Mb LCR22A-LCR22B region via chromosomal microarray analysis. Multiplex ligation-depend

Bilateral coronal craniosynostosis with novel TWIST1 mutation.

INTRODUCTION: Syndromic craniosynostosis is characterized by premature fusion of one or more cranial sutures, often in association with multisystem anomalies affecting the airway, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and neurodevelopmental systems. Variants in genes such as TWIST1 contribute to phenotypic heterogeneity and may influence surgical timing, risk stratification, and long-term craniofacial planning. We present a severe syndromic craniosynostosis phenotype associated with a previously undescribed TWIST1 variant and discuss perioperative considerations of staged cranial vault reconstructi

Congenital microtia-atresia in Iran: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Microtia-atresia is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by an abnormally small external ear (microtia) with a narrow or blocked ear canal or its absence (atresia). Its incidence is between 3 and 10 cases per 10,000 live births. Microtia is bilateral in 10% of cases and in unilateral cases, the right ear is affected twice as often. Although genetic elements like chromosomal abnormalities and mutations are known to significantly contribute to the development of microtia, various environmental factors have also been linked to its occurrence. CASE PRESENTATION: This article report

Prenatal Ultrasound Approach to Auricular Anomalies and Preauricular Tags: A Structured Imaging-Based Diagnostic Framework.

Auricular anomalies, including microtia and preauricular tags (PATs), are frequently overlooked findings on prenatal ultrasound, yet they may represent the earliest and sometimes the only clue to a wide spectrum of craniofacial and multisystem disorders. Distinguishing isolated anomalies from syndromic conditions remains a major diagnostic challenge in fetal medicine. In this illustrated, state of the art case-based review, we propose a practical, imaging-driven diagnostic framework for the prenatal evaluation of auricular anomalies. Drawing on a decade of clinical experience and a curated ser

Advances in prenatal ultrasound diagnosis of fetal tympanic ring anomalies.

The tympanic ring (TR) is an important component of the middle ear, and its developmental abnormalities can lead to serious consequences such as hearing loss. Prenatal identification of deep middle ear structural abnormalities, such as external auditory canal atresia, has long been challenging and has largely relied on indirect evaluation of auricular morphology. Recent advancements in ultrasound technology have enabled the prenatal detection of TR abnormalities and provided new imaging markers for earlier evaluation of external and middle ear development. This study aimed to evaluate the TR's

Microsurgical Reconstruction of the Ear and Temporal Region: Structural and Functional Considerations Including Hearing Rehabilitation-A Narrative Review.

Reconstruction of the ear and temporal region presents unique challenges due to the complex anatomy of the lateral skull base and the need to restore both structural integrity and auditory function. Historically managed as separate entities, auricular reconstruction and hearing rehabilitation are increasingly approached in an integrated manner, supported by advances in microsurgical techniques and implantable hearing technologies. This narrative review synthesizes contemporary evidence on microsurgical reconstruction of the ear and temporal region in conjunction with hearing rehabilitation, an

"Bio-Hammock" technique for prevention of expander inferior displacement in auricular reconstruction: A retrospective comparative cohort study of 198 patients.

BACKGROUND: Inferior displacement of tissue expanders during first-stage auricular reconstruction remains a persistent clinical challenge. We evaluated a modified dual-plane "bio-hammock" technique, in which the inferior pole of the expander (approximately 1.5-2.0 cm) is embedded within an intramuscular pocket fashioned within the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) belly, because of its efficacy in preventing inferior displacement and reducing complications. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 198 patients with unilateral microtia who underwent first-stage expander implantati

Revision Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction in an Adult Twin With Meier-Gorlin Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Meier-Gorlin syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by the clinical triad of microtia, patellar aplasia or hypoplasia, and proportionate short stature. The absence of the patella poses 2 surgical challenges: lack of a donor site for graft harvest and lack of anterior restraint during anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery. Given that individuals with Meier-Gorlin syndrome generally exhibit normal cognitive function and life expectancy, ensuring knee stability is essential to support their ability to participate in sports and engage in daily a

Evaluation of Patient-Specific Three-Dimensional Printed Templates for Framework Carving in Autologous Microtia Reconstruction: A Prospective Randomized Comparative Study.

Framework carving is the most difficult step in autologous microtia reconstruction. Conventional two-dimensional (2D) templates provide only a flat outline and do not reflect the depth and three-dimensional shape of the auricle, whereas a patient-specific three-dimensional (3D) printed template may improve intraoperative visualization of the ear during carving. This prospective randomized comparative study was conducted on 20 patients with unilateral microtia who were randomly allocated into 2 equal groups. Group A (n=10) underwent reconstruction using patient-specific 3D-printed auricular tem
