Bilateral Congenital Stapes Footplate Fixation With Absence of the Stapedial Tendon.

Congenital stapes footplate fixation (CSFF) is a rare cause of nonprogressive conductive hearing loss in pediatric patients. The concurrent absence of the stapedial tendon is exceptionally uncommon, and bilateral involvement has not been previously reported. This article describes a case of a 15-year-old male with a history of left hemifacial microsomia, bilateral microtia, and complex congenital heart disease who presented with longstanding bilateral conductive hearing loss with air-bone gap of 64 dB and 58 dB on the right and left, respectively. Surgical exploration revealed bilateral CSFF w

Vibrant Soundbridge and Porous Polyethylene Auricular Reconstruction in a Single‑Stage Procedure.

Microtia with aural atresia presents a dual challenge-restoration of external ear anatomy and rehabilitation of conductive hearing loss. Multiple staged procedures are often required, increasing patient burden. This study presents a single-stage surgical approach combining auricular reconstruction using Porous High-Density Polyethylene (pHDPE, Medpor®) with simultaneous implantation of a Vibrant Soundbridge (VSB) and intraoperative audiological evaluation. To assess the surgical feasibility, safety, and postoperative cosmetic and audiological outcomes of a combined one-stage Medpor reconstruct

Prenatal Tympanic Ring Anomaly Without Microtia: A Subtle Clue Toward Severe Early-Onset Monogenic Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the genetic etiologies and clinical significance of fetal tympanic ring abnormalities detected during second-trimester ultrasound in the absence of microtia. METHOD: Between November 2019 and June 2024, we examined the fetal tympanic rings of 10,277 unselected pregnant women during the 20-22 weeks of morphology ultrasound. Fetal cases with abnormal tympanic rings, without microtia, underwent amniocentesis for genetic investigation, including chromosome microarray analysis and trio genome sequencing (30×). RESULTS: Five fetuses (0.05%, 5/10,277) with abnormal tympani

Outcomes of Bonebridge Implantation in 10 Patients with Rare Genetic Syndromes and Difficult Anatomy.

Background: Congenital hearing loss occurs in about 2 of every 1000 newborns, of which half probably have a genetic origin. In syndromic patients, hearing impairment often results from craniofacial malformations affecting the outer and middle ear. Anatomical limitations such as microtia or external auditory canal atresia often preclude conventional air-conduction hearing aids, leaving bone-conduction devices as one viable option. However, surgical intervention in such patients is challenging. This study aimed to evaluate the audiological outcomes, safety, and effectiveness of the Bonebridge BC

Endocrine Phenotypes and Hormonal Treatment in Meier-Gorlin Syndrome: Report of Two Cases and a Systematic Review of Literature.

BACKGROUND: Meier-Gorlin-syndrome (MGORS) is a rare cause of primordial dwarfism stemming from pathogenic variants in genes involved in DNA replication. The classic clinical triad is microtia, absent patella and short stature. MGORS can mimic endocrine causes of short stature or delayed/atypical pubertal development. METHODS: We report two new cases of MGORS. A systematic literature search of all cases published up to 31 March 2026 was done to identify the cases reporting any endocrinopathy or hormonal therapy, focussing on growth-hormone-deficiency (GHD) and response to growth hormone (GH).

Syringocystadenoma Papilliferum in an Adolescent with Grade 3 Microtia and Facial Nerve Palsy: A Rare Case Report with Literature Review.

Syringocystadenoma Papilliferum (SCAP) is rare clinical entities with atypical presentation that lead to diagnostic challenges. We describe a case of a 13-year-old male who had foul-smelling right postauricular discharge for 4-month and progressive worsening of childhood-onset hearing loss. Examination revealed House-Brackmann grade I facial palsy on the right side and grade 3 microtia with mild conductive hearing loss. High-resolution computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of the temporal bone showed sclerosis of the right mastoid air cells along with inflammatory changes. Right t

Guillouet-Gordon Syndrome With Severe Microtia in an Infant With a Homozygous Variant in MED16.

Bi-allelic MED16 variants underlie the recently described MEDopathy termed Guillouet-Gordon syndrome (GGNS, MIM #621220), characterized by neurodevelopmental and structural anomalies. To date, 27 individuals with GGNS have been reported, collectively harboring 28 distinct compound heterozygous or homozygous MED16 variants. Here we present a male infant, born to unrelated parents, presenting with multiple congenital anomalies overlapping with the established GGNS phenotypic spectrum. Specifically, the clinical presentation included structural brain defects and neurodevelopmental deficits alongs

Molecular Characterisation of Treacher Collins Syndrome in a South African Cohort: Novel Disease-Causing Variants in TCOF1 and POLR1D.

BACKGROUND: Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS) is a rare craniofacial disorder characterised by variable expressivity. It is caused by pathogenic variants in the TCOF1, POLR1D, POLR1C, or POLR1B genes. Common clinical features include hypoplasia of the zygomatic complex and mandible, downward-slanting palpebral fissures, lower eyelid anomalies, microtia, and hearing loss. Owing to its phenotypic overlap with other craniofacial syndromes, molecular testing is essential for establishing an accurate diagnosis and guiding effective clinical management. METHODS: Ten South African patients with a susp

Aetiology-specific modification of incision design in OSIA® implantation; a cohort of 46 implants in a tertiary paediatric centre.

OBJECTIVES: Active transcutaneous bone conduction devices have expanded rehabilitation options for children with conductive, mixed, and single-sided deafness (SSD). The Cochlear™ OSIA® system improves hearing while preserving intact skin. We hypothesised that postoperative outcomes vary by operative context and that incision design may influence complication risk. METHODS: A prospectively maintained database of paediatric patients implanted between September 2021 and April 2026 was retrospectively analysed. Patients were grouped by operative context: (1) microtia/craniofacial anomalies, (2) s

Evolution and Hotspots in Autologous Ear Reconstruction: A Bibliometric Analysis of the 100 Most-cited Studies.

BACKGROUND: Autologous auricular reconstruction has evolved from cartilage-carving techniques that established modern microtia repair to an expanding regenerative and biofabrication literature. However, the field has not been mapped bibliometrically using an autologous-only lens that separates the clinical literature from emerging tissue-engineering hotspots. METHODS: A Scopus search in January 2026 identified publications on autologous auricular reconstruction. Records were sorted by citation count, screened for eligibility, and the 100 most-cited studies were included. Data extracted includ

CRABP2 upregulation in perichondral stem cells is associated with microtia.

Microtia is a common congenital craniofacial malformation characterized by the partial or complete absence of the external ear structure. Despite its relatively high incidence, the pathogenesis of microtia remain poorly understood. In this study, we analyzed both single-cell and bulk RNA sequencing data from microtia cases and identified a population of COL1 + HES1+mesenchymal stem cell in perichondrium with significantly higher expression of the CRABP2 gene, a gene that encodes a nuclear transporter of retinoic acid. Gene expression analysis further confirmed that the RA signaling intensity a

Sporadic Mixed Heterotopic Tissue Choristoma of the Middle Ear in an Adolescent Female: A Rare Case Report.

Choristomas are rare benign developmental lesions composed of histologically normal tissue located in an abnormal (ectopic) anatomical site. Their occurrence in the middle ear is uncommon and may mimic more common pathologies such as chronic otitis media or cholesteatoma, often leading to diagnostic challenges. We report a 16-year-old female who presented with chronic left ear discharge and hearing loss for 8 years. Examination revealed bilateral grade I microtia with a narrow external auditory canal. Pure tone audiometry showed bilateral conductive hearing loss, and high-resolution computed t

Making Preference Assessments More Acceptable and Effective for People with Dementia.

External auditory canal atresia (EACA) is a common otologic condition. Etiology can vary from congenital to acquired causes. It causes considerable difficulty to the patient. Bilateral ear canal atresia in children can lead to speech delays due to hearing impairment caused by this condition. Though easily diagnosed it is one of the most difficult conditions to treat. Acquired conditions can affect any age group. Restenosis following treatment is very common. This article focuses on the treatment of EACA due to different etiologies and emphasizes on special points of surgical treatment and foll

Lysosomal metabolism in pancreatic cancer and its crosstalk with host physiology.

Transcription factors from the family of Signal Transducers and Activators of Transcription (STAT) are activated by numerous cytokines. Two members of this family, STAT5A and STAT5B (collectively called STAT5), have gained prominence in that they are activated by a wide variety of cytokines such as interleukins, erythropoietin, growth hormone, and prolactin. Furthermore, constitutive STAT5 activation is observed in the majority of leukemias and many solid tumors. Inactivation studies in mice as well as human mutations have provided insight into many of STAT5's functions. Disruption of cytokine
