Lateral cleft lip and macrostomia: Case report and review of the literature.

Lateral clefts are rare in occurrence. The lateral cleft is cause by failure of fusion of the maxillary and mandibular dermatomes. It is also associated with preaurical tags. We present a case of a lateral cleft of the lip with multiple bilateral preauricular tags that was repaired using triangular flaps.

Macrostomia: a review of evolution of surgical techniques.

Macrostomia is a congenital deformity resulting from failure of fusion of maxillary and mandibular process. It is a rare congenital deformity with an incidence of 1 in 60,000 to 1 in 300,000 live births. Transverse facial clefts are more common on right side of face in unilateral cases. Males are more affected than females. Various surgical techniques have been described in the literature for the correction of these defects. We report a case of macrostomia corrected with Z-plasty closure for skin, overlapping muscle closure, and triangular mucosal flap for commissure, with a review on existing

A case of Barber-Say syndrome in a male Japanese newborn.

We reported a case of Barber-Say syndrome (BSS) in a Japanese newborn. Distinctive features of BSS were found; macrostomia, gingival dysplasia, cup-shaped low-set ears, wrinkling redundant skin, and hypertrichosis. Fundus showed subretinal drusenoid deposits, a novel finding of BSS. Genetic analysis is underway using next-generation genome sequencing and microarray analysis.

Repair for congenital macrostomia: vermilion square flap method.

Transverse facial clefts (macrostomia) are rare disorders that result when the embryonic mandibular and maxillary processes of the first branchial arch fail to fuse due to failure of mesodermal migration and merging to obliterate the embryonic grooves between the maxillary and mandibular processes to form the angle of the mouth at its normal anatomic position. Macrostomia may be seen alone or in association with other anomalies. It may be unilateral, extending along a line from the commissure to the tragus or bilateral. It is usually partial but rarely complete. Transverse facial clefts are mo

A rare case of accessory maxilla and bilateral Tessier no. 7 clefts, a 10-year follow-up.

A Tessier no. 7 cleft is a lateral facial cleft which originates from the oral cavity and extends towards the tragus, involving both soft-tissue and skeletal components. A male patient presenting with both maxillary jaw duplication and bilateral Tessier no. 7 clefts, which has been reported only twice in the literature, is described. Bilateral facial clefts, macrostomia and chondro-cutaneous remnants were noted, which were repaired and resected. With further growth, facial asymmetry and asymmetric facial nerve dysfunction became apparent. Radiographic examination showed an accessory maxillary

Asyndromic bilateral transverse facial cleft.

Bilateral transverse facial cleft, Tessier no 7 also known as bilateral congenital macrostomia are very rare clefts. We present an eight months old female with bilateral transverse facial cleft, third child of three siblings in a monogamous setting born to parents of Delta origin who resides in effurun Delta state of Nigeria. Mother ingested postinor several times in an attempt to abort pregnancy. Pregnant women should be encouraged to have adequate folic acid diet or supplements.

Congenital macrostomia: a case report.

Macrostomia is often associated with the first and second branchial arch syndrome. Depending on the involvement area, appearance may vary. In isolated cases of macrostomia, the cleft usually terminates at the medial border of the masseter muscle. The goal of macrostomia reconstruction is to achieve functional, symmetrical and accurate mouth commissure with minimal scar. In this article, we present an eight-year-old girl case with isolated bilateral macrostomia treated with vermillion-square flap method. We recommend this method for patients with mild to moderate macrostomia.

Partial midfacial duplication.

A case of craniofacial duplication is presented. Details on this rare form are described, and its treatment is discussed with brief review of the pertinent literature. We excised the duplicate maxilla and also discovered bilateral macrostomia. A year later, a mass appeared again. By CT scan, we found that there was a mass in the skull base extruding to the superior wall of cavitas pharyngis. The mass below the sphenoid bone and the ethmoid bone connected with the skull base. CT scan also showed malformation of the first cervical vertebra and odontoid process had bifurcated. Once again, we exci

Ablepharon macrostomia syndrome: A distinct genetic entity clinically related to the group of FRAS-FREM complex disorders.

Ablepharon macrostomia syndrome (AMS; OMIM 200110) is an extremely rare congenital malformation syndrome. It overlaps clinically with Fraser syndrome (FS; OMIM 219000), which is known to be caused by mutations in either FRAS1, FREM2, or GRIP1, encoding components of a protein complex that plays a role in epidermal-dermal interactions during morphogenetic processes. We explored the hypothesis that AMS might be either allelic to FS or caused by mutations in other genes encoding known FRAS1 interacting partners. No mutation in either of these genes was found in a cohort of 11 patients with AMS fr

Preferential associated anomalies in 818 cases of microtia in South America.

The etiology of microtia remains unknown in most cases. The identification of patterns of associated anomalies (i.e., other anomalies that occur with a given congenital anomaly in a higher than expected frequency), is a methodology that has been used for research into the etiology of birth defects. We conducted a study based on cases of microtia that were diagnosed from more than 5 million live (LB)- and stillbirths (SB) examined in hospitals participating in ECLAMC (Latin American Collaborative Study of Congenital Malformations) between 1967 and 2009. We identified 818 LB and SB with microtia

Bilateral macrostomia.

Macrostomia as a rare facial deformity is classified among facial clefts. It is a rare congenital anomaly which affects the aesthetics and function of the oral cavity. It is usually associated with deformities of other structures developed from the first and second branchial arches. Bilateral transverse cleft occurring alone is uncommon. Here we report a case of bilateral macrostomia (bilateral lip cleft) in a 5-year-old girl as a sole entity without other skeletal and facial deformities.

A de novo 1.38 Mb duplication of 1q31.1 in a boy with hemifacial microsomia, anophthalmia, anotia, macrostomia, and cleft lip and palate.

We reported a 2-year-old boy with developmental delay, mild mental retardation, and severe craniofacial malformation, including facial asymmetry with hypoplasia of the left zygoma, maxilla, and mandible, and left anophthalmia and anotia. A genome-wide screen revealed a 1.38 Mb duplication on chromosome 1q31.1, which was absent in his parents and 27 healthy controls. The duplication region contains two Refseq genes, PLA2G4A and C1orf99, which have not been reported to be implicated in craniofacial malformation. Functional studies of these genes and additional clinical analysis are necessary to
