Associations Between Longitudinal Antenatal Hematological Indicators and Risk of Patent Ductus Arteriosus in Newborns - Beijing, China, 2011-2025.

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC?: Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is closely associated with prematurity. Maternal conditions may increase offspring cardiac risk. However, antenatal hematological evidence remains limited. WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: Among 68,945 singleton live births, 945 were diagnosed with PDA. After false discovery rate correction, trimester-specific indicators, particularly prothrombin time and thrombin time, were found to be associated with PDA risk. The patterns differed by preterm birth, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, gestational diabetes mellitus, and c

[Evolution of treatment strategies and risk-stratified management of patent ductus arteriosus in preterm infants].

Patent ductus arteriosus is a common cardiovascular problem in preterm infants, particularly those born very preterm. Persistent left-to-right shunting may cause pulmonary overcirculation, left-sided volume overload, and systemic hypoperfusion, yet simply promoting anatomical ductal closure has not been shown to improve major clinical outcomes. Management has increasingly shifted from routine closure toward selective intervention guided by hemodynamic effects and clinical risk. This review summarizes the applicability of different management strategies, the boundaries of current evidence, and

The 'Upstairs-Downstairs' heart with complete main pulmonary artery agenesis and PDA-dependent pulmonary circulation: A rare structural intersection characterized by multi detector computed tomography.

Superior-inferior ventricular arrangement is an exceedingly rare form of congenital cardiac malposition, representing fewer than 0.1% of all congenital heart diseases, and is almost invariably associated with complex intracardiac anomalies. We report a 3-year-old male who presented with persistent cyanosis, exertional dyspnea, and failure to thrive. Prospective ECG-gated CT angiography demonstrated situs solitus with levocardia. A superior-inferior ventricular arrangement was present, with the morphologic left ventricle positioned superior to the morphologic right ventricle. The great arteries

Risk factors and outcomes of early postoperative complications following congenital heart surgery: a retrospective study at a tertiary care hospital in Nairobi, Kenya.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) remains a major health challenge globally, with surgical interventions being the primary treatment modality for many defects. While advancements in cardiac surgery have improved survival rates, early postoperative complications continue to pose risks, particularly in settings with limited resources like Kenya. The study aimed to assess the rate of any early postoperative complications and identify factors associated with it in children after cardiac surgery at a tertiary care hospital in Nairobi, Kenya from 2019 to 2024. METHODS: This was an single

The Evolution of Anesthesia for Congenital Heart Disease.

This educational review describes the historical development of pediatric congenital cardiac anesthesia and its expanding role in the care of patients with congenital heart disease (CHD). Over the past eight decades, the specialty has evolved from an era in which few congenital heart defects were surgically treatable and perioperative mortality was high to one in which survival into adulthood is expected for most children with CHD. This transformation has been driven by parallel advances in surgical techniques, cardiopulmonary bypass technology, myocardial protection, monitoring, intensive car

Polymeric and metallic occluders for interventional therapy of cardiovascular diseases.

Interventional therapy has, as a minimally invasive approach, been widely adopted for treating cardiovascular diseases, particularly structural heart disease, where occluders play a pivotal role in transcatheter closure. This paper comprehensively reviews the evolutionary trajectory and emerging frontiers of cardiovascular occluders, beginning with their interventional applications in congenital heart defects (atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, patent foramen ovale, and patent ductus arteriosus) and left atrial appendage closure. The focus then shifts to occluder materials and de

Anesthesia Management of a Patient With Patent Ductus Arteriosus: A Case Report of Eisenmenger Syndrome.

Patent ductus arteriosus is a congenital heart defect characterized by the persistence of a fetal connection between the pulmonary artery and the aorta, resulting in abnormal blood flow depending on its size. When left uncorrected, it can lead to pulmonary arterial hypertension and Eisenmenger syndrome. This disorder is characterized by the following triad: large intra- or extracardiac congenital defect with an initial systemic-to-pulmonary shunt, pulmonary arterial hypertension with shunt reversal (right-to-left) or bidirectional shunting, and hypoxemia with cyanosis. Understanding this chall

Preterm Neonatal Nutrition: Evolution Over the Course of 50 Years and Contemporary Challenges.

Advances in neonatal nutrition have markedly improved preterm survival, but achieving optimal growth and neurodevelopment remain a challenge. Modern fluid guidelines favor individualized, weight-guided fluid management based on gestational age, shifting away from historic liberal strategies to avoid patent ductus arteriosus and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Inadequate intake causes extrauterine growth restriction, negatively impacting neurodevelopment and long-term cardiometabolic risks. Human milk strongly reduces NEC risk but requires fortification to meet these high protein and mineral t

Suspected Infective Endocarditis in a Premature Neonate After Patent Ductus Arteriosus Occluder Placement: A Case Report.

Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is the most common cardiac abnormality in premature neonates, and percutaneous, transcatheter occlusion devices are increasingly used for its nonsurgical closure. Even though PDA occluders are safe and effective, they are not without risks. Infective endocarditis (IE), a complication associated with percutaneous occlusion device placement in other congenital heart conditions, has not been described with a PDA occluder. We describe a case of suspected endocarditis in an extremely low birth weight (ELBW) neonate after PDA occluder placement.

Holt-Oram syndrome presenting with failure to thrive due to a hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus: the importance of early cardiac evaluation in infants with radial ray abnormalities.

BACKGROUND: Holt-Oram syndrome (HOS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder caused by pathogenic variants in the TBX5 gene and characterized by radial ray malformations associated with congenital heart defects and/or cardiac conduction abnormalities. Although atrial and ventricular septal defects are the most common cardiac manifestations, other congenital cardiac lesions may occur. Early recognition of cardiac involvement is essential to prevent complications and improve outcomes. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of an 8-month-old female infant presenting with failure to thrive, feeding

Transcatheter Potts Shunt in Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension After Patent Ductus Arteriosus Closure.

We report the case of an 18-year-old female with progressive, end-stage pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) despite receiving maximal triple combination therapy. The patient had a history of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) closure at 15 months of age. Due to a pulmonary hypertensive crisis during anesthesia induction, a transcatheter Potts procedure was successfully performed under extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support, involving covered stent implantation just below the previous PDA occluder. At the 3-month follow-up, the patient demonstrated significant clinical improvement, sh

A Single-Center Retrospective Analysis of the Diagnostic Efficacy of Transthoracic Echocardiography in the Classification of Patent Ductus Arteriosus.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the diagnostic efficacy of transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) in classifying patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). METHODS: A total of 616 patients diagnosed with PDA underwent TTE. TTE measurements were obtained using the parasternal short-axis view of the great arteries and the suprasternal fossa aortic long-axis view. Using digital subtraction angiography (DSA) as the gold standard, the diagnostic efficacy of TTE for PDA classification was evaluated. RESULTS: Among true-positive cases correctly diagnosed by both TTE and DSA, the sensitivity for tubu
