In cases of isolated left brachiocephalic artery, if both ductus arteriosus remain patent, excessive pulmonary blood flow can occur, and cerebral perfusion may be compromised by a steal phenomenon, potentially leading to cerebral atrophy. We report a case of an isolated left brachiocephalic artery with bilateral patent ductus arteriosus in which transcatheter closure of both ductus arteriosus was successfully performed.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Data on transcatheter closure of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) have been widely reported in pediatric but not adult patients. This paper serves as an overview of the currently available evidence and supplements it with additional data from our multi-centre registry.
RECENT FINDINGS: Transcatheter closure of PDA is safe and effective in adults, with up to 90-100% success rate. Our multi-centre registry shows similar findings with low risk of complications. Yet there are special anatomical, imaging and technical considerations compared to the pediatric population, and the co

BACKGROUND: Children with complex cyanotic congenital heart disease (CHD) and with pulmonary hypertension (PH) commonly experience hypoxia. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) is a key regulator of cellular responses to low oxygen, and its levels are elevated in these conditions. However, HIF-1α concentrations in non-cyanotic CHD, such as patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), remain largely unknown. This study aimed to evaluate circulating serum HIF-1α levels in patients with PDA and compare them with those in healthy children and in patients with complex CHD after Fontan palliation.

BACKGROUND: Paracetamol is increasingly used as analgesic and to treat patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in preterm infants, though preclinical data suggest it may potentially harm the developing lung. The BeNeDuctus trial compared expectant PDA management versus ibuprofen in infants with gestational age <28 weeks, allowing paracetamol for analgesia. In this secondary analysis of the trial, we investigated the potential association between paracetamol and the risk of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD).
METHODS: The 273 infants enrolled in the BeNeDuctus were classified into four subgroups based on

Severe aortic coarctation in premature infant is a very challenging clinical situation. Surgery is the standard treatment, however it carries high complications rate particularly in presence of other comorbidities. Percutaneous procedure with balloon angioplasty or stenting is a valid alternative with a good safety profile. Here we report the case of a premature male infant born at 33 weeks of gestational age with a birth weight of 1.65 kg, affected by a complex genetic syndrome and multiple malformations. Echocardiography showed a wide PDA (Patent Ductus Arteriosus) with bidirectional shunt a

BACKGROUND: Although serum NT-proBNP is a useful marker of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) severity in the early postnatal period, its ability to predict the future need for PDA surgery remains unclear. This study aimed to compare the predictive abilities of early NT-proBNP and the PLASE score using an established echocardiographic model.
METHODS: Infants born at 23-29 weeks of gestation between 2019 and 2024 and admitted to a tertiary neonatal intensive care unit were included. Serum NT-proBNP levels and echocardiographic indices at 3 days of age were retrospectively collected. Three predicti

BACKGROUND: Postnatal weight loss is nearly universal in preterm infants, and its relationship to head circumference (HC) growth remains incompletely characterized. Growth standards were recently updated with the Fenton 2025 charts, which modify Z-score parameters compared to the 2013 version.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between postnatal weight trajectory and HC growth from birth to discharge in preterm infants ≤32 weeks of gestation across a large multicenter Latin American cohort, using Fenton 2025 growth standards.
METHODS: This observational cohort study by secondary analysis

A three-year-old neutered female Bernese mountain dog was referred for evaluation of multiple congenital cardiac abnormalities. Transthoracic echocardiography demonstrated features consistent with type A pulmonic stenosis, including a normal pulmonary valve annulus, an increased transvalvular pressure gradient, systolic doming of thickened and fused pulmonary valve leaflets, and concentric right ventricular hypertrophy. Additionally, a focal aneurysmal dilation arising from the intermediate pulmonary valve leaflet was identified. Furthermore, a concurrent left-to-right shunting patent ductus a

The ductal malformation known as a "Window Ductus" or "type B ductus" is a very rare congenital anomaly. The unique anatomy results in a diagnostic and surgical dilemma. It can easily be mistaken for a "typical" patent ductus arteriosus and approached via left thoracotomy. This can potentially result in a surgical misadventure. We report a patient diagnosed with a Window Ductus at 2 months of age with recurrent upper respiratory tract infections and complete left lung collapse. Repair was performed through a median sternotomy on cardiopulmonary bypass. The Window Ductus was clamped only on the

BACKGROUND: Down syndrome (DS) is the most common chromosomal disorder associated with congenital heart disease (CHD). However, data on CHD patterns, survival, and mortality predictors among individuals with DS in developing countries remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate these features in children with DS. METHODS: This hospital-based retrospective follow-up study included 460 children (≤ 18 years) with DS and CHD, followed at the Cardiac Center of Ethiopia between January 2014 and January 2025. Data were collected from April 1 to June 1, 2025. CHD patterns were described using frequen

A 2-year-old boy initially misdiagnosed with dextro-Transposition of the Great Arteries (d-TGA) was accurately diagnosed with Berry syndrome-an extremely rare congenital heart defect-using multimodal imaging and 3D printing. Echocardiography and CTA revealed aortopulmonary window, anomalous origin of the right pulmonary artery, type A aortic arch interruption, and patent ductus arteriosus. A patient-specific 3D-printed model from CTA data significantly enhanced visualization of complex vascular anatomy. This case highlights the value of combining multimodal imaging and 3D printing for diagnosi

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) complicates a clinically important subset of adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) and contributes to substantial morbidity and premature mortality. This narrative review synthesizes direct and indirect evidence within a second-hit conceptual framework for ACHD-associated PAH. In this framework, baseline pulmonary vascular susceptibility interacts over time with sustained hemodynamic or hypoxemic exposure and with superimposed biological or clinical stressors. SOX17 has the clearest direct genetic association with ACHD-PAH, whereas evidence involving BMPR2

INTRODUCTION: Extremely preterm infants commonly develop marked early changes in plasma glucose and sodium concentrations, but their clinical relevance remains unclear. We therefore aimed to characterize plasma glucose, sodium, and calculated osmolarity, and examine their associations with short-term neonatal outcomes.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective single-center cohort study of 42 extremely preterm infants (22+0 - 27+6 weeks' gestation). Levels, variability, and temporal patterns in serial plasma glucose and sodium measurements, as well as calculated plasma osmolarity, were analyzed d

BACKGROUND: Down syndrome (DS), or trisomy 21, is the most common chromosomal disorder associated with congenital heart disease (CHD), profoundly affecting disease progression and management. While 4-10% of all CHD cases occur in DS, 40-60% of individuals with DS have CHD. CHD remains the leading cause of mortality in DS within the first two years of life, with atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD), ventricular septal defect (VSD), atrial septal defect (ASD), patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), and tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) being most prevalent. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) frequently complicates t

Managing patients with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) and complex anatomical features, such as tortuosity and branching anomalies, remains a challenge in interventional cardiology. Recent advances in three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction and morphologic analysis of ductal anatomy have shown promise in improving procedural outcomes. This study evaluates the utility of 3D reconstruction in pre-procedural planning for PDA stenting. This retrospective, single-center study included patients who underwent PDA stenting from June 2018 to March 2025. Pre-procedural CT and 3D reconstructions were perfor

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, particularly preeclampsia, are associated with increased risk of postpartum cardiovascular complications. We report a case of a 43-year-old female with known mild-to-moderate aortic regurgitation and thoracic aortic dilation who developed new left ventricular systolic dysfunction shortly after cesarean delivery for severe preeclampsia. On postoperative day three, she presented with chest pain and was found to have a reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (43%) on transthoracic echocardiography. Computed tomography angiography excluded aortic dissection
