Malaria vectors and urbanization in the equatorial forest region of south Cameroon.

Entomological surveys were carried out in the town of Mbalmayo and in the nearby rural village of Olama, within the equatorial forest zone of Cameroon. Mosquitoes were captured when landing on human volunteers and by pyrethrum spray catches. Malaria vectors captured were Anopheles gambiae Giles (M and S forms) and A. moucheti Evans in both areas, together with A. funestus Giles in Mbalmayo. One A. marshallii (Theobald) specimen infected by Plasmodium falciparum was found in Olama. Anopheles moucheti was the most abundant anopheline species caught in Olama, while A. gambiae was the most abundan

Malaria: a 10-year (1994-2003) retrospective study at University Malaya Medical Center (UMMC), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Malaria is still one of the most important vector-borne diseases in Malaysia, particularly in remote areas. This retrospective study was carried out to find the prevalence of malaria among patients admitted to UMMC Kuala Lumpur, from 1994-2003. A total of 86 malaria cases were analyzed. Most cases occurred among foreigners [57% (49 cases)] while Malaysians constituted 43% (37 cases). Among foreigners, Indonesians constituted the most [57% (28 cases)]. Among Malaysians, most cases occurred among the Chinese [35% (13 cases)] followed by the Malays [30% (11 cases)]. Males [70%(60 cases)] were mor

[Congenital malaria as a result of Plasmodium malariae in an infant born to a HIV-seropositive woman].

Congenital malaria is uncommon in France. The purpose of this report is to describe a case involving a six-week-old infant who was hospitalized with fever, hepatosplenomegaly, anemia and thrombopenia. Thick and thin blood smears were positive for Plasmodium malariae. The infant responded favorably to chloroquine. Based on this experience, we performed a search of the literature to find case reports on congenital malaria in France and compare clinical and epidemiologic data with series reported in the United States and from endemic areas. The placenta appears to provide an effective barrier aga

Impact of a double dose of sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine to reduce prevalence of pregnancy malaria in southern Mozambique.

Malarial infection during pregnancy increases the risks of severe sequelae for the pregnant woman and the risk of delivering a low birthweight baby. The aim of this intervention study was to reduce significantly the prevalence of malaria parasitaemia in adolescent parturients in Matola and Boane in Mozambique. The study was focused upon the most malaria-vulnerable group, adolescent nulliparous and primiparous women. After completing the usual antenatal clinic and giving informed consent, 600 pregnant women were randomly chosen in a double blind manner to one of two regimens comparing the preva

[Triple malaria infection in twin sisters from the Democratic Republic of Congo].

Infections with 3 species of malaria parasites are rarely encountered and observed in less than 0.05% of cases. We came across such an infection in four year-old, monozygote twin sisters, coming from Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo). In both of them, parasitemia was low or very low for P. falciparum and P. ovale and of 0.1-0.2% for P. malariae. The twin sisters presented with an iron deficiency anaemia, associated with an heterozygous sickle-cell anaemia and a moderate splenomegaly. The biological tests results were similar. They responded well to treatment. We point out the difficulty

The epidemiology of malaria in the Papua New Guinea highlands: 2. Eastern Highlands Province.

The epidemiology of malaria in Eastern Highlands Province (EHP) is characterized by generally very low-level or no local malaria transmission but a considerable risk of epidemics. In non-epidemic situations, parasite prevalence was under 5% in all but one area, Lufa Valley, where P. vivax was the most common parasite (prevalence rate of 58%). During epidemics, however, 23% (range 8-63%) of people were infected, with P. falciparum the predominant parasite. Mixed infections were very common (12%) but P. malariae and P. ovale were rare. Outside epidemics, malaria was only a minor source of febril

Malarial nephropathy.

Malaria is widely prevalent in the tropics. Clinically significant renal and renal-related disorders commonly occur in infection with Plasmodium falciparum and P. malariae. Falciparum malaria causes fluid and electrolyte disorders, transient and mild glomerulonephritis, and acute renal failure (ARF). It appears that ARF is mediated by a complex interaction of mechanical, immunologic, cytokine, humoral, acute phase response, nonspecific factors, and hemodynamic factors. Parasitized erythrocytes play a central role in all aforementioned pathogenic factors of ARF. Antimalarial drugs are still the

[Two cases of mixed infection of malaria diagnosed by PCR method].

We here reported two Japanese cases of mixed infections of plasmodium species, whose DNAs were detected using the PCR test. One case was a 31 year-old male, who presented fever and fatigue, and had a travel history to Kenya, Cameroon and Indonesia. Smear test of his peripheral blood found the presence of Plasmodium vivax, while nested-PCR diagnosis detected the DNAs both P. vivax and Plasmodium malariae. The other was a 54 year-old female suffering from general fatigue. She had been treated with chloroquine for falciparum malaria in Indonesia two weeks before. Malaria antigen test showed posit

Atovaquone + proguanil: new preparation. Second-line antimalarial combination.

(1) Quinine, halofantrine and mefloquine are effective treatments for most cases of uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria. (2) The choice of drug for prevention of P. falciparum malaria in highly endemic regions depends on the risk of chloroquine resistance, and possibly mefloquine resistance. The reference treatments are the chloroquine + proguanil combination, and mefloquine. (3) Marketing authorisation has been granted in France for the atovaquone + proguanil combination, in curative and preventive treatment of P. falciparum malaria. Short report: increased susceptibility to Plasmodium malariae in pregnant alpha(+)-thalassemic women.

The influence of alpha(+)-thalassemia on malaria in pregnancy was assessed in a cross-sectional study of 530 women in Ghana. Plasmodial infections, alpha(+)-thalassemia, serum levels of C-reactive protein, and antimalarial drugs in urine were determined. The alpha-globin genotypes did not correlate with the prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum-infection and parasite densities. However, Plasmodium malariae tended to be more frequent in alpha(+)-thalassemic women (P = 0.05). Excluding women with residual antimalarials, a significant excess of P. malariae was observed in alpha(+)-thalassemic indiv

Transfusion-transmitted malaria in the United States from 1963 through 1999.

BACKGROUND: Transfusion-transmitted malaria is uncommon in the United States. After the report of three cases of complicated Plasmodium falciparum infection acquired by transfusion, we reviewed all cases of transfusion-transmitted malaria reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from 1963 through 1999. METHODS: Information on the patients was from surveillance reports sent to the CDC. Information about the implicated blood donors came from the National Malaria Surveillance System. To determine whether donors should have been excluded from donating blood, we compared th

Malaria in the first 6 months of life in urban African infants with anemia.

A total of 446 infants in the first 6 months of life who presented at an urban children's hospital with complaints of any illness whatsoever were recruited into a study with the aim of determining the contribution of malaria to infant morbidity in a malaria-endemic urban area in Nigeria. Sixty-eight of the infants were in their first month of life and 79, 77, 61, 97, and 64 were in their second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth month of life, respectively. Overall, 107 (24.0%) infants were clinically diagnosed as having malaria. This included 3 who were in the first month of life, 12 in the seco
