According to current estimates, Plasmodium malariae is not very common in Senegal, as more than 98% of malaria cases are suspected to be due to Plasmodium falciparum. However, it is possible that other malarial species are being under-reported or misdiagnosed. This is a report of a case of P. malariae in a 30-year-old man previously hospitalized with acute kidney injury after treatment with quinine and re-hospitalized three months later. He was diagnosed with renal cortical necrosis post malaria treatment. Plasmodium malariae was identified with light microscope and confirmed using species-spe

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium knowlesi is a simian malaria parasite that is widespread in humans in Malaysian Borneo. However, little is known about the incidence and distribution of this parasite in the Sandakan division, Malaysian Borneo. Therefore, the aim of the present epidemiological study was to investigate the incidence and distribution of P. knowlesi as well as other Plasmodium species in this division based on a most recent developed hexaplex PCR system (PlasmoNex™).
METHODS: A total of 189 whole blood samples were collected from Telupid Health Clinic, Sabah, Malaysia, from 2008 to 2011. A

BACKGROUND: The burden of anemia attributable to non-falciparum malarias in regions with Plasmodium co-endemicity is poorly documented. We compared the hematological profile of patients with and without malaria in southern Papua, Indonesia.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: Clinical and laboratory data were linked for all patients presenting to a referral hospital between April 2004 and December 2012. Data were available on patient demographics, malaria diagnosis, hemoglobin concentration, and clinical outcome, but other potential causes of anemia could not be identified reliably. Of 922,120 patient epis

Approximately 170 million inhabitants of the American continent live at risk of malaria transmission. Although the continent's contribution to the global malaria burden is small, at least 1-1.2 million malaria cases are reported annually. Sixty percent of the malaria cases occur in Brazil and the other 40% are distributed in 20 other countries of Central and South America. Plasmodium vivax is the predominant species (74.2%) followed by P. falciparum (25.7%) and P. malariae (0.1%), and no less than 10 Anopheles species have been identified as primary or secondary malaria vectors. Rapid deforest

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major global public health problem. But kidney involvement is more common and appears more severe in Africa than in developed countries. The likely causes of end stage renal disease (ESRD) or CKD stage 3 and above in developed countries are diabetes, hypertension and less frequently glomerular diseases. In contrast, in decreasing order in Africa are glomerulopathies, hypertension and diabetes. The reasons for this preponderance of glomerular diseases are not fully known but may be linked to the persistence or reemergence of tropical diseases. This study review

BACKGROUND: For companies operating in malaria endemic countries, malaria represents a substantial risk to workers and their dependants, and can lead to significantly reduced worker productivity. This study provides an overview of the malaria epidemiology within an oil palm plantation in Popondetta, south-eastern Papua New Guinea, its implication for the company with its employees and their families and the potential for control.
METHODS: In 2006, we carried out a cross-sectional study within six company villages, which included the determination of parasite rates by conventional microscopy,

BACKGROUND: In areas where malaria endemicity is high, many people harbour blood stage parasites without acute febrile illness, complicating the estimation of disease burden from infection data. For Plasmodium falciparum the density of parasitaemia that can be tolerated is low in the youngest children, but reaches a maximum in the age groups at highest risk of infection. There is little data on the age dependence of tolerance in other species of human malaria.
METHODS: Parasite densities measured in 24,386 presumptive malaria cases at two local health centres in the Wosera area of Papua New G

BACKGROUND: Splenic rupture during acute malaria is rare but underreported. Because splenic rupture occurs mostly in non-immune adults, ongoing malaria elimination efforts may paradoxically increase the proportion of Plasmodium-infected patients suffering from this life-threatening complication. The pathogenesis and optimal patient management are still debated.
METHOD: We collected and analysed reports of pathological rupture of the spleen associated with malaria published over the last 50 years in five languages.
RESULTS: Fifty-five cases were reported, due to Plasmodium falciparum (n=26),

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Malaria in humans is caused by any of four species of intraerythrocytic protozoa of the genus Plasmodium (i.e., P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale, or P. malariae). These parasites are transmitted by the bite of an infective female Anopheles sp. mosquito. The majority of malaria infections in the United States occur among persons who have traveled to or from areas with ongoing malaria transmission. In the United States, cases can occur through exposure to infected blood products, congenital transmission, or local mosquitoborne transmission. Malaria surveillance is conducted t

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Malaria during pregnancy is a recognised risk factor for low birth weight and probably decreases the survival of offspring, particularly during their first month of life. On the other hand, acquired maternal immunity may protect infants against malaria infection or disease. This study assesses these two opposite effects simultaneously.
METHODS: We used the data of a large epidemiological study on malaria (Garki project) to analyse the impact of malaria during pregnancy on survival of offspring in their first year of life. The dataset contains 138,197 survey records, r

Malaria is the tropical disease most commonly imported into the UK, with 1500-2000 cases reported each year, and 10-20 deaths. Approximately three-quarters of reported malaria cases in the UK are caused by Plasmodium falciparum, which is capable of invading a high proportion of red blood cells and rapidly leading to severe or life-threatening multi-organ disease. Most non-falciparum malaria cases are caused by Plasmodium vivax; a few cases are caused by the other two species of Plasmodium: Plasmodium ovale or Plasmodium malariae. Mixed infections with more than 1 species of parasite can occur;

Malaria remains a serious health problem in many parts of the world. It causes high morbidity and claims many lives in developing countries each year. Humans are generally infected by four species of malaria parasites. However, malaria infection caused by Plasmodium malariae or P. falciparum is recognized as an important cause of acute renal failure (ARF) and other renal-related disorders (nephropathy) in infected patients. The increasing incidence of malarial ARF (MARF) and the emergence of clinical malarial infection after renal transplantation represent a serious challenge. Additionally, th

We examine the charts of 408 malaria-naive neurosyphilis patients given malaria therapy at the South Carolina USPHS facility, with daily records encompassing at least 93% of the duration of infection, and focus on the 152 patients infected with the St. Elizabeth strain of Plasmodium vivax, 82 with the McLendon strain of Plasmodium filciparum, 36 with the USPHS strain of Plasmodium malariae, and 15 with the Donaldson strain of Plasmodium ovale in whom gametocytes appeared before drug, or other, intervention. In P. vivax infections, fever and parasitemia were higher after gametocytes were first

Malaria continues to be a wide-spread infection in tropical areas. According to World Health Organization, malaria is present in over 100 countries, populated by over 3 bln people. Malaria morbidity in these areas is difficult to estimate. Tropical malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum is responsible for more than 95% of fatal cases. Other Plasmodium species able to infect humans are P. vivax, P. ovale and P. malariae, typically responsible for more prolonged course of the disease, with possibility of late relapse, but rarely resulting in fatal outcome. We present a case of tropical malaria,

In the present day scenario of resurgence of infectious diseases, malaria compounded with problems of multi drug resistance, assumes paramount importance. A combination of artemisinine derivatives with other effective anti-malarial drug remains the most effective form of treatment against the falciparum malaria which is most lethal form of disease. Oral chloroquin in the dose of 25 mg base/kg over 48 hours is effective in infections due to P. vivax, P. ovale P. malariae and chloroquine sensitive P. Falciparum. For chloroquine resistant P. vivax and multidrug resistant falciparum malaria, a com

We here reported two Japanese cases of mixed infections of plasmodium species, whose DNAs were detected using the PCR test. One case was a 31 year-old male, who presented fever and fatigue, and had a travel history to Kenya, Cameroon and Indonesia. Smear test of his peripheral blood found the presence of Plasmodium vivax, while nested-PCR diagnosis detected the DNAs both P. vivax and Plasmodium malariae. The other was a 54 year-old female suffering from general fatigue. She had been treated with chloroquine for falciparum malaria in Indonesia two weeks before. Malaria antigen test showed posit

(1) Quinine, halofantrine and mefloquine are effective treatments for most cases of uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria. (2) The choice of drug for prevention of P. falciparum malaria in highly endemic regions depends on the risk of chloroquine resistance, and possibly mefloquine resistance. The reference treatments are the chloroquine + proguanil combination, and mefloquine. (3) Marketing authorisation has been granted in France for the atovaquone + proguanil combination, in curative and preventive treatment of P. falciparum malaria. (4) The efficacy of the atovaquone + proguanil comb

The records of 20 children with imported malaria admitted to Kings County Hospital between October 1987 and May 1995 were reviewed. All had a history of recent travel or immigration from a malaria endemic area (West-Africa [16], Central-America [three], and the Caribbean [one]). None of the 10 children with a travel history received appropriate malaria chemoprophylaxis. The most common symptoms and signs were daily fever, chills, and hepatomegaly. Diagnosis was delayed in seven children who were initially felt to have pharyngitis or viral syndrome. Common laboratory findings were anemia and th

The differentiation of malaria from other causes of fever in the absence of microscopy is notoriously difficult. Clinical predictors of malaria have been studied in an area of low and unstable transmission on the western border of Thailand. In 1527 children aged 2-15 years who were followed prospectively for 7 months, 82% (1254) had at least one febrile episode. Malaria caused 24% (301) of the first febrile episodes (Plasmodium falciparum 128, P. vivax 151, P. malariae 1, mixed infections with P. falciparum and P. vivax 21). Each malaria case was matched with the next child of similar age pres
