Late-diagnosed bilateral congenital choanal atresia in adulthood: a case report.

Choanal atresia is a congenital obstruction of the posterior nasal apertures, diagnosed in neonates due to respiratory distress. Adult presentations are exceptionally rare, particularly in bilateral disease. We report a 38-year-old woman with a 20-year history of progressive bilateral nasal obstruction, rhinorrhea, posterior nasal drip, nocturnal cough, hyposmia, oral breathing, and hypersensitivity to odors. She also reported chronic left-sided otologic symptoms since childhood, including persistent otorrhea, sensorineural hearing loss, tinnitus, and itching. Computed tomography imaging exclu

Dental Management of CHARGE Syndrome Under General Anaesthesia: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: CHARGE syndrome is a rare congenital genetic disorder caused by variants in CHD7 gene. The acronym "CHARGE" represents its primary features: coloboma of the iris or retina, heart defects, choanal atresia, retardation of growth and development, genital anomalies, and ear anomalies including hearing loss. Craniofacial and oral abnormalities are a significant component of its clinical spectrum and often complicate conventional dental care, necessitating reliance on pharmacological behavior management techniques. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 4-year-old boy with CHARGE syndrome

Synergistic Role of Retinoid and Gata3 Signaling in Olfactory Epithelium Development.

Craniofacial development requires precise coordination of epithelial patterning and morphogenesis. However, the molecular mechanisms governing olfactory epithelium development remain incompletely understood. Retinoic acid (RA) signaling and Gata3 have each been independently implicated in craniofacial morphogenesis, particularly in the formation of the primitive choanae, which constitute the opening between the nasal cavity and the oral cavity. Here, we generated a tamoxifen-inducible, genetically controlled compound mutant mouse model to simultaneously disrupt Rdh10, a rate-limiting enzyme fo

Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Restore Standards in Medical and Dental Education in Pakistan.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Navigation-assisted endoscopic U-flap technique and steroid-eluting stent for choanal atresia repair.

OBJECTIVES: Surgery is the only treatment for congenital choanal atresia (CCA). It is crucial to avoid postoperative restenosis or re-occlusion of the neo-choana. This study investigated the efficacy of a navigation-assisted endoscopic endonasal U-flap technique and a bioabsorbable steroid-eluting stent for CCA repair. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 26 patients with CCA, divided into two groups (Group A and Group B). All the patients underwent navigation-assisted endoscopic endonasal resection of the atretic plate. In Group A, a silicone tube was placed to support the neo-

[On the issue of classification of vomer deformities in children].

UNLABELLED: Numerous publications on the classification of the nasal septum deformity (deviation) are mainly related to the anterior septal parts and the development of this pathology in the adult population. None of the available classifications contain the detail of the vomer deformities, required to select an algorithm for subsequent doctor's actions, as well as considering the clinical and anatomical features of this zone in children with congenital choanal atresia (CCA) or in its isolated deformity. OBJECTIVE: To develop the classification of the vomer's deformities variants based on an

A recurrence analysis in patients with congenital choanal atresia.

Recurrences following congenital choanal atresia (CA) repair are a particular challenge. This study sought to investigate the underlying causes of recurrences. The study compared 33 primary surgeries (controls, median age 32 months) to 34 revision surgeries (revision group, median age 10 months) performed between 2010 and 2024 at the department of otorhinolaryngology of a German university hospital. Demographic data, surgery time [min], length of hospitalization [nights] and the intraoperatively identified causes of recurrences were analysed. To test for differences between the two groups, the

Stented and non-stented endoscopic techniques in bilateral choanal atresia repair: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Bilateral choanal atresia is a rare congenital obstruction of the posterior nasal apertures that causes severe respiratory distress and feeding difficulties in neonates and infants. While endoscopic surgical repair is the standard of care, the use of postoperative nasal stents remains controversial due to potential complications. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review and meta-analysis compared outcomes of stented versus non-stented endoscopic approaches in bilateral choanal atresia to evaluate efficacy and safety for pediatric clinical decision-making. METHODS: Following PRISMA guid

Long-term Quality of Life After Endoscopic Repair of Choanal Atresia in Children.

IntroductionChildren with choanal atresia (CA) typically present with nasal obstruction and require surgical intervention to establish a patent airway. Transnasal endoscopic surgery is the preferred treatment approach. However, long-term outcome data are lacking. This study aims to assess the long-term outcomes and quality of life (QoL) after endoscopic repair of CA.MethodsChildren under age 18 years underwent endoscopic repair of CA using mucoperichondrial flaps developed from the nasal septum between 2007 and 2022. Their parents completed two standardized telephonic QoL questionnaires (Hebre

A Case of CHARGE Syndrome with a Novel Intronic Variant in the CHD7 Gene.

CHARGE syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by variations in the CHD7 gene. The characteristic findings of the syndrome include coloboma (C), heart anomalies (H), choanal atresia (A), growth and developmental delay (R), genitourinary system anomalies (G), and ear anomalies and/or hearing loss (E). A 7.7-years-old male patient was initially referred after a partial empty sella appearance was noted on brain imaging during evaluation for developmental delay at 10 months of age. He had undergone surgery for choanal atresia and congenital heart disease. The patient exhibited severe pos

Expanding the Genetic Landscape of RASopathies: Significance of Including NF1 in Targeted Panels.

INTRODUCTION: RASopathies are genetic disorders linked to the RAS/MAPK signaling pathway, including Noonan syndrome and related conditions. These disorders have overlapping features and variable phenotypes, making diagnosis challenging. This study examines the clinical and genetic characteristics of RASopathies in pediatric patients to improve diagnostic accuracy and identify novel pathogenic variants. METHODS: A total of 23 patients, who were not related to each other and were clinically diagnosed with RASopathy, participated in the study. Patients underwent next-generation sequencing (NGS)
