Laryngocele masquerading as a soft tissue neck mass.

Laryngocele is a rare entity which can clinically present as a neck mass and requires Computed Tomography (CT) and laryngoscopy for diagnosis. We present an interesting case of bilateral laryngocele in a 45-year-old male presented clinically as hoarseness and left sided neck mass without any history of predisposing factors. Ultrasonography (USG) and CT features of laryngocele is also presented here.

Laryngocele: a cause of upper airway obstruction.

Laryngoceles are abnormal dilatations of the laryngeal saccule, which rises between the ventricular folds, the base of the epiglottis and the inner surface of the thyroid cartilage. Clinical symptoms are rare, and the find of asymptomatic laryngoceles in pathology studies are frequent. Sometimes it is presented as cervical swelling causing airway obstruction in need of emergency intervention. In this study, we report a case of upper airway obstruction due to laryngocele treated by emergency tracheotomy and we review of the literature. Laryngocele complications include infection (pyocele format

[Two cases of laryngocele].

A laryngocele is a rare benign dilatation of the anterior part of Ventriculus Laryngis. The symptoms are either hoarseness, a tumor on the neck or a combination. In the literature a link between laryngocele and carcinoma of the larynx is well described. For this reason a careful clinical examination together with MRI or CT scans is of outmost importance. None of the patients described had larynx cancer. Of the two patients described, one underwent surgery, the other was treated conservatively due to general health.

[Influence of thyroid cartilage ossification in laryngeal ultrasound].

BACKGROUND: Topological features of the larynx and hypopharynx may be depicted during sonographic examination of the neck, although ultrasound is seen of minor diagnostic importance. The varying extend of thyroid cartilage ossification appears to be the major limiting factor. We intended to assess the sonographic accessability of laryngeal structures with high end resolution ultrasound devices. METHODS AND PATIENTS: We examined 101 patients endoscopically and by ultrasound. Normal laryngeal findings and pathologies were examined and analysed considering limitations by thyroid cartilage ossifi

Internal laryngopyocele presenting as acute airway obstruction.

A laryngopyocele forms when a laryngocele becomes infected and fills with mucopus. We report a case of an internal larngopyocele that presented as airway obstruction in a 34-year-old man; such a presenting sign is exceedingly rare. We also review the anatomy, etiology, and clinical course of the different types of laryngoceles.

Mixed laryngocele: a case report and review of the literature.

Laryngocele is a rare, benign dilatation of the laryngeal saccule that may extend internally into the airway or externally through the thyrohyoid membrane. Many laryngoceles are asymptomatic; sometimes they may cause a cough, hoarseness, stridor, sore throat and may present as a swelling on one or both sides of the neck. Laryngocele may be associated with supraglottic squamous cell carcinoma. Computed tomography scan is the most effective imaging method for diagnosis. Surgery is the treatment of choice. A case of large mixed laryngocele in a 75-year-old male is described together with surgical

The association of laryngoceles with squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx presenting as a deep neck infection.

OBJECTIVES: We present a case of an external laryngocele with laryngeal carcinoma. INTRODUCTION: A laryngocele is a rare benign lesion of the larynx resulting from an abnormal dilation of the laryngeal saccule filled with air. When the neck of the laryngocele is obstructed, it fills with mucus and is called a laryngopyocele. RESULTS: There may be a relationship between laryngoceles and squamous cell carcinomas of the larynx. A review of the literature found a reported association between laryngoceles and carcinomas of the larynx of between 4.9 and 54%. In this report, we present a case of an

[Fourth branchial cyst within the thyrohyoid membrane: a difficult differential diagnosis with mixed laryngocele].

We present a case of a 62-year-old female patient with a right latero-cervical mass and an enlarged arytenoepiglottic fold, that caused voice disturbances. Computed tomography of the neck depicted an unilocular and homogeneous well-defined cyst located in the right parapharyngeal space that extended through the thyrohyoid membrane. It was initially diagnosed of mixed laryngocele. During surgical resection, no connexion between the lesion and laryngeal ventricle was detected, so the final diagnosis was branchial cyst. We discuss the pathogenicity and clinical, radiological and histological find

False-positive uptake of I-131 in a laryngocele mimicking thyroid remnant after thyroidectomy for papillary thyroid carcinoma.

A 66-year-old woman underwent total thyroidectomy for papillary thyroid carcinoma stage pT4 followed by radioiodine therapy with 3.7 GBq (100 mCi) iodine-131. Radioiodine therapy revealed intense radioiodine uptake of the neck, which was interpreted as thyroid remnant tissue. Follow-up whole-body scans with iodine-131 in hypothyroidism 3 months and 1 year after radioiodine therapy revealed focal uptake in the neck. Computed tomography and gadolinium-enhanced MRI of the neck demonstrated an ovoid lesion in the larynx without gadolinium enhancement. Neither thyroid remnant tissue nor enlarged ce

Laryngocele: a rare complication of surgical tracheostomy.

BACKGROUND: A laryngocele is usually a cystic dilatation of the laryngeal saccule. The etiology behind its occurrence is still unclear, but congenital and acquired factors have been implicated in its development. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a rare case of laryngocele occurring in a 77-year-old Caucasian woman. The patient presented with one month history of altered voice, no other associated symptoms were reported. The medical history of the patient included respiratory failure secondary to childhood polio at the age of ten; the airway management included a surgical tracheostomy. Flexible n

[Bilateral internal laryngocele with open nasality--report of a case].

Laryngocele is an abnormal saccule dilatation of the ventricle in direct communication with the laryngeal lumen. It is usually filled by air and mostly asymptomatic. This case is reported due to its rarity. A bilateral internal laryngocele with open nasality in 66-year-old man is described. Patient has been observed for 8 years with stable course of the disease and good general condition. Because the squamous cell carcinoma is known to occur in association with laryngocele necessity of control evaluation is very important. The etiology, classification, evaluation is discussed.
