INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: We report a case of a thymoma that developed in the cyst wall during follow-up of a unilocular thymic cyst.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old woman was found to have abnormal findings on a computed tomography (CT) scan of the chest. The chest CT revealed a well-circumscribed, hypodense mass in the left anterior mediastinum. During follow-up 5 years later, a small nodule emerged within the cystic lesion. Surgical resection was performed to establish a definitive diagnosis, which confirmed a type A thymoma, classified as pathologic stage I, arising within a thymic cy

INTRODUCTION: Duplication cysts are rare congenital malformations arising from developmental anomalies of the primitive foregut, with an incidence of approximately 1 in 8200 live births. These cysts may present at any point along the esophagus but most commonly occur in the upper thoracic region.
CASE PRESENTATION: This report presents a rare case of a large thoracic duplication cyst in a 3-month-old female Asian infant who presented with respiratory distress and cyanosis. Imaging studies, particularly computed tomography scans, revealed a large cystic mass in the posterior mediastinum. Surgi

Mediastinal esophageal duplication cysts are rare congenital foregut malformations that may cause respiratory symptoms due to airway compression. Excision is recommended once a diagnosis is made to prevent infection, bleeding, or rupture. We report two boys with recurrent wheeze/stridor or chronic cough; contrast-enhanced chest computed tomography showed paraesophageal cysts (20-30 mm) in the right posterior mediastinum. Both underwent thoracoscopic resection using a three-port approach with low-pressure CO₂ insufflation. Operative time was ~120 min with minimal blood loss (~10 mL). One infant

Posterior mediastinal cysts are rare lesions accounting for ~5%-10% of mediastinal cysts. Most are bronchogenic, enteric, or neurogenic in origin; however, Müllerian cysts have recently been recognized as a distinct entity thought to arise from displaced Müllerian duct tissue. Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome results from incomplete development of Müllerian ducts and is characterized by congenital absence of the uterus and upper vagina. A shared embryological origin suggests a possible association between MRKH syndrome and mediastinal Müllerian cysts. We report the first known ca

Childhood tuberculosis (TB) can present with atypical and rare manifestations, posing significant diagnostic challenges. While mediastinal masses in children are frequently malignant, congenital cysts can become secondarily infected. Furthermore, TB is a rare but recognized cause of secondary autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA). We present the case of a four-year-old partially vaccinated boy from Lahore who presented with a four-month history of low-grade fever, progressive pallor, and jaundice. Clinical examination revealed severe pallor, icterus, and hepatosplenomegaly. Laboratory investigati

Background Esophageal duplication cysts (EDCs) are rare congenital foregut malformations, accounting for only 0.5 to 2.5% of all esophageal masses. Although typically diagnosed during childhood, adult presentations are uncommon and frequently characterized by asymptomatic progression or non-specific clinical features. We report the case of a 58-year-old male presenting with atypical chest pain and anxiety. Multimodal imaging (CT and MRI) revealed a massive posterior mediastinal mass measuring 12 × 11 cm that exerted significant mechanical compression on the left atrium. The patient underwent a

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Foregut mediastinal cysts are rare congenital anomalies arising from aberrant embryonic foregut development, with an estimated incidence of 1 in 42,000 to 1 in 100,000. These benign lesions, including bronchogenic, esophageal duplication, and neurenteric cysts, account for 12-20% of mediastinal masses. They may remain asymptomatic or cause respiratory, gastrointestinal, or neurological symptoms due to compression or complications like infection. This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of their embryogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnostic strategies, t

BACKGROUND: Giant pericardial cysts are rare mediastinal lesions that can lead to significant morbidity if complicated by infection, compression of adjacent structures, or secondary complications such as right-sided heart failure. This case report highlights the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges of managing an infected giant pericardial cyst in a resource-limited setting in Africa.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 2 months old infant presented with symptoms of fast breathing, dyspnea, fever, and signs of right-sided heart failure, including peripheral edema and ascites. Imaging studies, including che

Bronchogenic cyst is a condition arising from congenital abnormalities in the respiratory system. It can be classified into intrapulmonary, mediastinal, and ectopic types depending on its location. Ectopic types are rare, and diagnosis typically depends on pathological examination. This paper presents a case of a female patient admitted to our hospital with abdominal pain. Preoperative imaging revealed a mass in the tail of the pancreas, which was surgically excised. Postoperative pathology confirmed the diagnosis of a gastric bronchogenic cyst. Based on the patient's diagnosis and treatment,

INTRODUCTION: Our objective was to investigate the accuracy of prenatal diagnoses of congenital lung malformations (CLM) compared to postnatal diagnoses in a population in northern Finland and to estimate the birth prevalence of CLMs in the same population.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective review of all CLM cases in a tertiary referral center, Oulu University Hospital, Finland, in 2010-2020. Data were collected from medical records. The final postnatal diagnosis was recorded as the pathologic-anatomic diagnosis, if available, and otherwise as the postnatal radiologic diagnosis.
RESULTS:

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital anomalies stemming from the tracheobronchial tree. Often, they are incidental findings, but they can also cause significant symptom burdens such as coughing, haemoptysis, and respiratory distress. Generally, the optimal treatment is surgical excision via lobectomy, but not all patients are suitable for this. Herein, we present the case of an 84-year-old female with a large intrapulmonary bronchogenic cyst who presented with progressive dyspnoea, haemoptysis, and fevers. Due to relative contraindications for surgery, an ultrasound-guided percutaneous inter

BACKGROUND: Neuroenteric cysts are exceedingly rare congenital anomalies. Although the exact pathogenesis is incompletely understood, neuroenteric cysts can arise when foregut duplication cysts extend into the spinal canal. This process is likely related to failure of endodermal cell separation from ectodermal counterparts during week 3 of development, and symptoms depend on location and degree of encroachment on surrounding structures. Complete resection remains the treatment of choice with the lowest incidence of recurrence, but the optimal surgical approach is debated. Associated congenital

Ectopic pancreas (EP) is a rare congenital anomaly defined as pancreatic tissue lacking anatomical or vascular continuity with the pancreas. Although it occurs in 0.25%-2% of the population, mediastinal EP is exceedingly rare, with fewer than 30 reported cases. We present a case of a 51-year-old woman found to have a large anterior mediastinal mass incidentally during trauma workup. Imaging revealed a cystic lesion with rim calcification, concerning for teratoma. Surgical resection via sternotomy was performed due to size and complexity. Histopathology demonstrated a duplication cyst containin

Congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM) is a structural anomaly that occurs during development of the lower respiratory tract. We describe a 4-day-old male infant with this uncommon congenital anomaly. He presented with respiratory distress and low oxygen saturation. A chest radiograph showed infiltration in the right lower lobe, and a chest computed tomography (CT) revealed alveolar opacity with an air bronchogram pattern in the right lung along with mediastinal shift. The right lower lobe was surgically resected. Pathological examination showed an 8-cm, predominantly solid cut surfac

INTRODUCTION: Esophageal duplication cyst (EDC) is a rare congenital anomaly originating from the embryonic foregut. While often asymptomatic, it can present with respiratory symptoms due to compression. We report a rare pediatric case successfully managed using robotic-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (RATS), highlighting the technique's utility in addressing this uncommon foregut malformation.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: An 8-year-old male child, born at term, presented with one week of intermittent left-sided chest pain, bloating, and nausea. Chest radiography demonstrated a high-density mediastin

INTRODUCTION: The patient showed an uneventful recovery post-surgery, underscoring the significance of early intervention in managing rare congenital anomalies. Bronchogenic cysts constitute 13-15 % of congenital cystic lung diseases and 6 % of childhood mediastinal masses. Arising from abnormal foregut development during embryogenesis, these cysts can be asymptomatic or cause serious complications, such as airway or vascular compression.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 10-day-old female newborn presented with a pulmonary cystic lesion in the left upper lung lobe, identified via routine antenatal ultras

Congenital lobar emphysema is a rare non‑vascular lung malformation with an incidence of 1:20,000-1:30,000 live births. It presents as respiratory distress in the neonatal period and associated imaging findings of lobar hyperinflation. We report on a case from our institution to enhance diagnosis of this rare disorder. A 3‑week‑old male with acute respiratory distress, hypoxia, reduced unilateral breath sounds and pneumonia whose diagnosis was missed on the initial chest radiograph. Current foetal ultrasonography should be able to detect these cases, but they are missed and present with respir

OBJECTIVE: Surgery for symptomatic congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM) is uncontroversial. However emergency surgery for neonates with CPAM presented as progressive respiratory distress still carries high risks. This article introduces a new strategy aimed at improving the safety and effectiveness of surgery. METHOD: 4 neonates were diagnosed with CPAM with mediastinal shift by prenatal diagnosis and experienced progressive respiratory distress after birth. Insertion of a chest drain in the main cyst of the CPAM was performed as effective interim management to relieve respiratory d

BACKGROUND: Bronchogenic cysts (BCs) are rare foregut-derived cystic malformations that can develop within the respiratory tract. While they are commonly found in the mediastinum or lungs, their occurrence at ectopic sites, such as the stomach, is extremely rare. This case report highlights the challenges in diagnosing a gastric bronchogenic cyst and the potential for misdiagnosis a pheochromocytoma, especially when associated with hypertension.
