Bronchogenic cysts, first described in 1859, are rare congenital cystic malformations of the respiratory tract, with an incidence of one per 42,000-68,000 hospital admissions in one hospital series. They comprise 10-15% of mediastinal tumors and between 50% and 60% of mediastinal cystic lesions. Its clinical diagnosis is often challenging due to the absence of distinct imaging features. This case report focuses on the case of a 51-year-old female who initially received a misdiagnosis of esophageal leiomyoma. Subsequently, during exploration in the operating theater, right thoracoscopy revealed

INTRODUCTION: Oesophageal duplication cyst (EDC) is a rare congenital anomaly representing, after neuronal tumours, the second most common cause of posterior mass in children, with a prevalence of approximately 1/22,500 live births. Cervical cysts are very rare, and their antenatal detection is fairly uncommon.
METHODS: We report the case of an isolated large mediastinal and cervical tubular EDC diagnosed prenatally in the third trimester.
RESULTS: After birth, the baby became symptomatic developing respiratory distress due to the enlargement of the cyst and she underwent excision of the mas

INTRODUCTION: There have been two cases of congenital diaphragmatic hernia associated with a gastroesophageal duplication cyst documented in the literature, both presented symptomatically in the newborn period. This case is unique given the patient presented in adolescence asymptomatically.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present a case of a 15-year-old female who initially presented with lower abdominal pain. A CT chest and abdomen was concerning for a moderate to large hiatal vs diaphragmatic hernia and an adjacent 4.3 cm lower mediastinal cyst. Though asymptomatic, the patient underwent diagnosti

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Esophageal duplication cysts (EDCs) are rare congenital malformations, often discovered incidentally during endoscopy or on computed tomography (CT) scans. The role of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and CT scan in the diagnosis of these lesions and indications for surgical treatment are underreported. The aim of this study was to investigate these topics in a cohort of patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between January 2001 and October 2020, 82 patients had a suspicion of esophageal duplication cyst on endoscopic ultrasound. Thirty four of these patients were referred for surgi

INTRODUCTION: Fetal thoracoamniotic shunts are common lifesaving interventions but frequently require replacement. Needle fetal thoracoscopy is a technique that uses standard thoracoamniotic shunt introducer sheaths to permit direct visualization and even instrument manipulation during shunt deployment to facilitate optimal positioning and primary shunt function in the most challenging cases.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this study, 5 patients who underwent needle fetal thoracoscopy-assisted thoracoamniotic shunt placement were reviewed. Three patients with large, macrocystic congenital pulmonary ai

A bronchogenic cyst (BC), although a rare congenital abnormality, represents the most common cystic lesion in the mediastinum and can present with chest pain and shortness of breath, especially due to compression of adjacent vital structures. The most common diagnostic modalities used are computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These cysts may elude even a seasoned clinician unless they become symptomatic. For clinicians attempting to give optimum and prompt management for these cysts, robotic-assisted surgical resection is the recommended treatment of choice. Robotic-as

Background: Bronchogenic cysts result from a congenital anomalous budding of the tracheobronchial tree. Resection is usually recommended to avoid complications. Mediastinal bronchogenic cysts present a unique challenge due to their proximity to vital structures. The purpose of this study is to review our experience with mediastinal bronchogenic cysts. Methods: A single-institution retrospective review evaluated all mediastinal bronchogenic cyst excisions between January 2012 and November 2022. Patient demographics were assessed, including age at diagnosis, presenting symptoms, imaging workup,

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital lesions found primarily in the mediastinum. Most patients are asymptomatic and can be treated with minimally invasive resection. We present a case of a middle-aged patient who presented to a district general hospital with palpitations and shortness of breath. She underwent a computerised tomographic pulmonary angiogram that showed a likely bronchogenic cyst and was subsequently transferred to our hospital. She developed atrial fibrillation during admission requiring therapy with beta-blockers and digoxin. Cardiac MRI revealed a large cyst posterior to the

OBJECTIVE: Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital abnormalities, and usually asymptomatic until adulthood. We present a fetus prenatally diagnosed with a bronchogenic cyst, experiencing compression symptoms immediately after birth and underwent thoracoscopic surgery at 14 days old.
CASE REPORT: A 33-year-old primigravida had a suspicion of fetal tracheal cyst. Prenatal ultrasound scan revealed a cyst near the trachea at 23 weeks' gestation. Fetal MRI defined a cystic lesion in the upper mediastinum, displacing surrounding vessels. A 3,940 g girl was delivered vaginally at 38 weeks' gestation.

Bronchogenic cysts, benign congenital malformations resulting from abnormal tracheobronchial tree budding, primarily manifest in the mediastinum, with retroperitoneal occurrence being exceedingly rare. Typically incidental findings on imaging, and their diagnosis pose challenges, particularly when malignancy is suspected. We present a case involving a 55-year-old woman diagnosed with chronic back pain. Physical examination revealed a painful mass in the left renal region. Subsequent MRI identified a smooth mass in the left adrenal gland without infiltration of surrounding structures. Laparosco

Cystic lymphangioma (CL) is an uncommon congenital malformation of the lymphatic system, often occurring in the head, neck, or mediastinum, potentially causing compression symptoms like dysphagia or dyspnea, and in rare cases, neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome (nTOS). This report details a case of a 38-year-old male with a four-year history of a left lower neck mass, experiencing tingling in his left forearm over the last six months. The examination revealed a left supraclavicular cystic mass, with imaging suggesting CL compressing neurovascular structures. The patient underwent successful c

Bronchogenic cysts (BCs) are a congenital anomaly, forming fluid-filled sacs in the bronchial tree during fetal development, and are relatively rare in adults. Patients with large BCs in the mediastinum presenting with severe tracheal compression pose a significant challenge to anesthesiologists. The confined and narrow space of the mediastinum exacerbates the compression effect on surrounding structures, leading to potential respiratory or cardiovascular collapse during anesthesia and postoperatively. Herein, we report the stepwise anesthetic management of a patient with a BC in the paratrach

We point out the issue of differential diagnosis regarding the finding of ectopically localised thymic tissue (a thymic cyst) in the neck. Thymic tissue can be found anywhere along its developmental tract of descent, from the angle of the mandible to the upper mediastinum. Disruption of the thymic descent can result in ectopically/abnormally localised islets of accessory thymic tissue, which may undergo cystic changes, as described in a case report by Sun et al. This anatomical variation of the thymus may be clinically misinterpreted as a neoplasm or other congenital anomalies as a branchial c

BACKGROUND: Bronchial cysts are congenital malformations usually located in the mediastinum, and intrapulmonary localization is very rare. Cryoablation is a novel therapeutic approach that promotes tumor necrosis and stimulates anti-tumor immune responses.
CASE SUMMARY: This article reports a case of a 68-year-old male patient who was diagnosed with an intrapulmonary bronchogenic cyst by computed tomography examination and pathology, and the patient subsequently underwent cryoablation therapy and achieved complete response with after 3 months of follow-up.
CONCLUSION: Intrapulmonary bronchog

INTRODUCTION: Bronchogenic cysts (BCs) are congenital lesions from abnormal foregut development, usually located in the mediastinum or lungs. While often asymptomatic and benign, they can cause complications. Surgical excision is the definitive treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old female presented with a five-year history of heaviness in the right hypochondrium. Imaging revealed a 15 cm cyst initially thought to be in the hepatic lobe, but a CT scan confirmed it was a retroperitoneal cyst. Laparoscopic excision of the cyst, measuring 11 × 6.4 × 2.3 cm, confirmed it as a bronchogenic cy

BACKGROUND: Thymic cysts can be classified as congenital or acquired. Most thymic cysts do not change in size over a short period of time. Although very rare, thymic cyst rupture is associated with serious complications, such as mediastinal hemorrhage and hemothorax. We experienced a case of partial rupture of a secondary thymic cyst, in an asymptomatic patient.

UNLABELLED: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) increase risk for mental and physical health disorders in adulthood, particularly in individuals from sexual and ethnic minority groups. The effects of ACEs on health may be mediated by the immune system. The exact mechanisms by which an environmental exposure, such as childhood adversity, can affect the immune system are still unknown. The primary aim of this study was to determine whether early adversity is associated with significant changes in the expression of a predefined set of immune-related genes, known as the conserved transcriptional

Esophageal bronchogenic cysts are very rare. A bronchogenic cyst is a congenital malformation resulting from abnormal sprouting of primitive bronchi because of a foregut bronchopulmonary malformation. An 18-year-old patient with a cystic tumor in the left posterior mediastinum was identified. The mediastinal tumor was removed by uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. The operation was performed in the prone position through a single 4-cm incision on the lateral scapular line in the left ninth intercostal space. After tumor resection, the dissected esophageal muscle and mediastinal ple

Esophageal duplication cysts are rare congenital noncancerous growths. Symptoms of this disease are reported to be asymptomatic in approximately 70% but include respiratory symptoms such as coughing and difficulty breathing. Minimally invasive removal of these cysts without esophagectomy is typically recommended. However, when the cyst is situated in the upper mediastinum, surgical excision becomes technically challenging. Here, we report a case of an obese female patient with esophageal duplication cyst in the upper mediastinum who underwent successfully robotic-assisted complete removal of t
