Descriptive epidemiology of orofacial clefts in South Australia.

OBJECTIVE: There is wide variability in the prevalence of orofacial clefts at birth across geographic locations. The study aimed to quantify the prevalence of orofacial clefts and provide demographic details of the individuals identified with an orofacial cleft in South Australia. DESIGN: The South Australian Birth Defects Register (SABDR) data was used to identify individuals born in South Australia with any orofacial cleft including cleft lip (CL), cleft lip and palate (CL + P), cleft palate (CP), cleft uvula (CU) and facial clefts (FC) between 1986 and 2019. The proportion of orofacial cle

Bifid Uvula-An Enigma.

Facial development involves an intricate regulatory mechanism that accounts for numerous craniofacial abnormalities, common being orofacial clefts. Although cleft in the secondary palate accounts for one-third of orofacial clefts stills remains an under-researched domain. Hence, in this work, the authors put forth two non-syndromic, asymptomatic cleft uvulae reported among bimodal male patients of the Indian-Asiatic population who came up for dental screening. Most of the time, isolated/asymptomatic cleft uvula patients will be reluctant to further investigations and treatment. Although bifid

Prevalence of bifid uvula in primary school children.

BACKGROUND: A bifid uvula is an anatomic variation that can be predictive of sub-mucous cleft palate, which may cause velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI). Bifid uvula prevalence in the literature ranges from 0.18% to 10.3%, depending on the population studied. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of bifid uvula in the Geneva's school children population. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Geneva's primary school children, from September 2014 to June 2015. An examination of the uvula was performed by dentists working for the Scholastic Dental Service, after a spec

Phosphoglucomutase-1 deficiency: Intrafamilial clinical variability and common secondary adrenal insufficiency.

Phosphoglucomutase 1 (PGM1, EC 5.4.2.2) plays a critical role in glucose homeostasis and is also essential for protein N-glycosylation. The main clinical manifestations of PGM1 deficiency (MIM 614921) reported in 19 patients from different ethnic backgrounds include the following: cleft uvula/palate, Pierre Robin sequence, muscle weakness, dilated cardiomyopathy, growth retardation, elevated serum transaminases, hypoglycemia, and various endocrine abnormalities. We report the variable clinical picture of seven patients with PGM1 deficiency from a consanguineous family. Medical records of the p

Search for rare liver diseases: the case of glycosylation defects mimicking Wilson Disease.

Pediatric hepatology appears to be a very specific field of paediatrics which deals mainly with rare diseases although clinical features can be commonly found - like increased activity of transaminases. Some of these rare diseases like Wilson disease are commonly looked for and recently Wilsonian like phenotypes have been described which additionally presented with abnormal glycosylation of the plasma protein transferrin. In a subgroup of those patients with specific additional clinical symptoms (cleft uvula, low blood sugar, rhabdomyolysis and dilated cardiomyopathy) phosphoglucomutase 1 defi

Variability in expression of a familial 2.79 Mb microdeletion in chromosome 14q22.1-22.2.

Deletions in chromosome 14q22-23 have been associated with variable manifestations including malformations of the eye, limbs, palate, and brain, and with developmental and growth delay. Haploinsufficiency of BMP4, OTX2 and possibly SIX6 are thought to contribute to the phenotype. We present a three generation family with four individuals carrying a 2.79 Mb microdeletion 14q22.1-22.2 encompassing BMP4 but not OTX2 nor SIX6. The highly variable manifestations in this family range from multiple congenital malformations with Robin sequence, microphthalmia, postaxial polydactyly, and developmental

1.15 Mb microdeletion in chromosome band 20p13 associated with moderate developmental delay-additional case and data's review.

We report on a 9-year-old girl with subtelomeric 20p microdeletion. She was referred for genetic counseling because of learning difficulties/school problems. During the evaluation short stature, hypoplastic fingernails, submucous cleft palate with cleft uvula, flat feet, and frequent upper respiratory infections, as well as the large fontanelle after birth were observed. No facial dysmorphic features specific for chromosomal aberrations were present. The diagnosis of deletion of 20p13 was established by MLPA, and delineated by arrayCGH. Our report describes the third individual with this appro

Osteochondritis dissecans and Osgood Schlatter disease in a family with Stickler syndrome.

PURPOSE: Stickler syndrome is among the most common autosomal dominant connective tissue disorders but is often unrecognised and therefore not diagnosed by clinicians. Despite much speculation, the cause of osteochondrosis in general and osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) and Osgood Schlatter syndrome (OSS) in particular remain unclear. Etiological understanding is essential. We describe a pair of family subjects presented with OCD and OSS as a symptom complex rather than a diagnosis. METHODS: Detailed clinical and radiographic examinations were undertaken with emphasis on the role of MRI imagin

EEC syndrome, Arg227Gln TP63 mutation and micturition difficulties: Is there a genotype-phenotype correlation?

We report on two unrelated families with EEC syndrome (ectrodactyly, ectodermal dysplasia, cleft lip/palate), each with an Arg227Gln TP63 gene mutation, where the phenotype overlapped extensively with the allelic disorder, limb-mammary syndrome (LMS). Features common to both families were an ectodermal dysplasia principally affecting tooth, breast and nipple development, dacryostenosis and severe micturition difficulties. Additional findings included post-axial digital hypoplasia, cleft uvula, anal stenosis, hypoplasia of the perineal body and biopsy-proven interstitial cystitis. No individual

Surgical repair of unidirectional palatopharyngeal epignathus: Case report and review of literature.

Epignathus is an extremely rare, benign, congenital teratoma that arises from within the oral cavity and may be attached to the mandible, palate, or base of the skull. Because of its location, it can cause airway and feeding problems, as well as secondary defects due to the presence of an intraoral tumor. This tumor usually causes death in neonates, due to airway obstruction. Surgical removal is usually impossible, especially in large tumors (Stone, 1951; Bennett, 1970). A patient with a neonatally diagnosed nonobstructive palatopharyngeal epignathus is described. It was associated with a shor

Duplication of (12)(pter-q13.3) combined with deletion of (22)(pter-q11.2) in a patient with features of both chromosome aberrations.

We report a patient with multiple dysmorphic signs and congenital malformations, representing a combination of clinical features of duplication (12p) and deletion (22)(q11.2) syndromes. The girl had overgrowth at birth, showed abnormal cranio-facial findings, cleft uvula, a complex conotruncal heart defect, a polycystic right kidney, and an umbilical hernia. She died at the age of 6 months of cardio-respiratory failure. Cytogenetic examination demonstrated a derivative chromosome 12 replacing one of the two chromosomes 22. The paternal karyotype was normal 46,XY while the mother's karyotype wa

Mild pemphigus foliaceus responding to combination therapy with niacinamide and tetracycline.

BACKGROUND: Green tea (Camelliasinensis [L.] Kuntze) belongs to the plant family Theaceae and is mainly distributed in East Asia, the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. This plant has been proven to be beneficial to human health, and green tea is the second most consumed beverage in the world after water. However, until now, the effect of green tea aqueous extract (GTE) upon postmenopausal osteoporosis has remained unclear. In this study, we investigated the therapeutic effects of GTE on estrogen deficiency-induced osteoporosis and explored the possible mechanisms in vivo and in vitro. M

Report of a child with aortic aneurysm, orofacial clefting, hemangioma, upper sternal defect, and marfanoid features: possible PHACE syndrome.

We report a female patient who had a scalp hemangioma, a cleft uvula, an upper sternal defect, pectus excavatum, arachnodactyly, pes planus, and joint hypermobility. She had rupture of an aortic aneurysm after minor trauma at 11 years of age. At 17 years of age, elective repair of a dilated, ectatic aorta was complicated by cerebral ischemia. Other vascular abnormalities in the proband included an aneurysm of the left subclavian artery, atresia of the right carotid artery, and calcified cerebral aneurysms. We believe that the proband's physical anomalies are best described by the PHACE (poster

Growth and developmental retardation, ocular ptosis, cardiac defect, and anal atresia: confirmation of the ROCA-Wiedemann syndrome.

We report on a girl with growth and mental retardation, peculiar face with ptosis, epicanthus, broad nasal bridge, low-set and abnormal ears, cleft uvula, congenital heart defect, and anal atresia. A similar condition was reported previously by Wiedemann et al. [1982: An atlas of characteristic syndromes: a visual aid to diagnosis, 2nd ed. p 114-115]. We confirm the existence of this condition that, although similar to Ohdo syndrome, seems to be an independent clinical entity. We propose that, based on the principal clinical manifestations, this condition should be identified with the acronym

Two cases with interstitial deletions of chromosome 2 and sex reversal in one.

We present two children with de novo interstitial deletions of the long arm of chromosome 2 (karyotypes 46,XY, del(2)(q31.1q31.3) and 46,XY, del(2)(q24.3q31.3), respectively). The first child had severe learning difficulties, growth retardation, unilateral ptosis, small palpebral fissures, a cleft uvula, and bilateral cutaneous syndactyly of the second and third toes. Despite her male karyotype, she had female external genitalia with hypoplasia of the clitoris and labia minora. This is the first reported case of feminization of the external genitalia in a genotypic male with an interstitial de

Auriculo-condylar syndrome: further evidence for a new disorder.

We report on a patient born to normal and nonconsanguineous parents and presenting with strikingly malformed ears, abnormalities of the condyle of the mandible, micrognathia, small mouth, and cleft uvula. The similarity of our patient with those reported previously by Jampol et al. [1998: Am. J. Med. Genet. 75:449-452] led us to suggest that they have the same condition.

Distal 6p deletion syndrome: a report of a case with anterior chamber eye anomaly and review of published reports.

We describe a 32 year old male with a distal 6p24.3-->pter deletion. He has specific developmental anomalies of the anterior chamber of the eye and a cleft uvula which is consistent with the recent localisation of genes for iris development and orofacial clefting to distal 6p. In addition he has progressive sensorineural deafness and this may localise a gene for deafness to this region. We conclude that a refined distal 6p deletion syndrome exists and includes a characteristic facial appearance with hypertelorism, downward slanting palpebral fissures, tented mouth, smooth philtrum, palatal mal

Prevalence of cleft uvula among school children in kindergarten through grade five.

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of bifid uvula among elementary school children in grades K through 5. Three examiners performed independent intraoral examinations of 709 children enrolled in a Jacksonville, Florida metropolitan public school. The structure of the uvula was evaluated as normal or bifid. If bifid, the cleft was classified as: (a) notched, (b) extending up to 1/4 the length of the uvula, (c) extending from 1/4 to 3/4 of the length of the uvula, or (d) extending the full length of the uvula. Prevalence of some form of uvular cleft was observed among 16 (
