Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Restore Standards in Medical and Dental Education in Pakistan.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Premaxillary Setback With Posterior Vomerine Ostectomy and Complete Bilateral Cleft Lip Repair: Report of a Case With Challenging Anatomy.

Congenital clefts of the lip and/or palate are among the most common craniofacial malformations. Patients with bilateral cleft of the lip often present with projected premaxilla. Premaxillary setback with a vomerine ostectomy posterior to the vomero-premaxillary suture, bilateral cleft lip repair, bilateral gingivoperiosteoplasties, and primary cleft lip rhinoplasty are achieved in a single-stage surgery that provides a valuable alternative to patients, especially in the outreach settings. In this article, we present a case report of a patient born with a bilateral cleft of the lip and a protr

In search of the optimal pain management strategy for children undergoing cleft lip and palate repair: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pain following pediatric cleft lip and palate repair provide unique challenges. As no guidelines presently exist, we sought to identify the most effective and safe perioperative pain management strategies for children undergoing primary cleft lip and palate repair. METHODS: A systematic search of MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane library, Scopus, and Web of Science databases was conducted. A total of 230 unique titles were then assessed. Pooled analysis of variables was conducted, and data pertaining to common approaches in decreasing postoperative analgesia were compared.

Additional malformations in femoral hypoplasia: unusual facies syndrome.

This syndrome comprises of bilateral femoral hypoplasia and unusual facies comprises of short nose with broad tip, elongated philtrum, thin upper lip, small lower jaw, cleft palate and antimongolian slant of palpebral fissure. Etiology is idiopathic, sporadic, few families have been reported to have autosomal dominant inheritance. We report a case with the additional finding of unilateral complete aplasia of femur, encephalocele, complete cleft lip, bilateral absence of 5th metatarsal and toe and hypospadias. The mode of inheritance appears to be sporadic mutation in this case.

On the symmetry of limb deficiencies among children with multiple congenital anomalies.

In humans, unpaired organs are placed in a highly ordered pattern along the left-right axis. As indicated by animal studies, a cascade of signaling molecules establish left-right asymmetry in the developing embryo. Some of the same genes are involved also in limb patterning. To provide a better insight into the connection between these processes in humans, we analysed the symmetry of limb deficiencies among infants with multiple congenital anomalies. The study was based on data collected by the International Clearinghouse for Birth Defects Monitoring Systems (ICBDMS). Registries of the ICBDMS

Left or right hand dominance in children with cleft lip and palate.

The relationship between unilateral cleft lip, bilateral cleft lip, palatal clefting and left-right hand dominance was studied in 337 patients with cleft lip and/or palate aged between 3 and 14 years. There was no statistically significant difference in the laterality of handedness between different types of cleft nor between unilateral left and right sided cleft lip with or without cleft palate.
