BACKGROUND: Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is one of the most common congenital craniofacial anomalies, often associated with structural variations in the maxillary sinus and pharyngeal airway. These alterations may predispose individuals to complications such as sinusitis and obstructive sleep apnea. While previous studies have investigated these structures, most relied on two-dimensional imaging, which has inherent limitations for evaluating three-dimensional structures. Moreover, the maxillary sinus and airway have rarely been evaluated together in a unified three-dimensional framework, despite

This study investigated upper airway characteristics in hemifacial microsomia (HFM) patients. A total of 68 HFM patients, categorized into four phenotypes (type I, IIa, IIb, and III), and 82 age-, sex-, and body mass index-matched controls were analysed. 3D airway models were reconstructed using Mimics software, and several parameters, including airway volume, mean cross-sectional area (CSA), minimum CSA (min-CSA), and lateral-to-anterior-posterior (LAT/AP) ratio, were measured. Results showed that HFM patients had significantly smaller total airway volume, mean-CSA, surface area, and min-CSA

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Orthognathic surgery for asymmetric mandibular prognathism may induce side-specific alterations in the pharyngeal airway, yet conventional analyses are limited to global assessments. This technical report introduces a reproducible method for three-dimensional (3D) hemisided airway analysis to investigate these nuanced changes. This retrospective study included 5 patients with asymmetric mandibular prognathism who underwent a hybrid technique combining modified intraoral vertico-sagittal ramus osteotomy (mIVSRO) on one side and sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) on the other. Preoperative an

INTRODUCTION: Babies with Down syndrome (DS) present physical characteristics that can make breastfeeding difficult, including hypotonia of the muscles of the oral cavity and pharynx which can create problems with sucking and swallowing. Breastfeeding has proven beneficial for babies, and it is recommended to be exclusive for the first 6 months. However, babies born with DS have a higher probability of not being breastfed.
OBJECTIVE: Describe the frequency and characteristics of breastfeeding in children with DS at the National Institute of Pediatrics, Mexico City.
RESULTS: The mothers repor

UNLABELLED: Drought is a major global limiting factor for rice (Oryza sativa L.) production. Drought conditions reduce the quality and yield of rice. In the current research, we explored the effects of diverse seed priming agents and their combinations on multiple facets of grain quality, bio-molecular mechanisms, and enzyme activities. Combinations of the priming agents like MJ (methyl jasmonate) + Zinc sulphate heptahydrate (MJZ), MJ + Iron sulphate heptahydrate (MJI), and MJ + Zinc sulphate heptahydrate + Iron sulphate heptahydrate (MJIZ) were used for the seed priming. High performance liq

PURPOSE: Although injection pharyngoplasty (IP) has been well described as a treatment for velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) in the pediatric population, there are far fewer studies on its safety and effectiveness in adults with acquired VPI. Our study aims to characterize the safety and efficacy of IP as a treatment for acquired VPI in adults while identifying underlying VPI etiologies and injection characteristics that are associated with positive outcomes.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 30 adult patients with acquired VPI who were treated with IP. We collected data on p

BACKGROUND: Velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) is common in patients with repaired cleft palate. Speech surgery, which encompasses operative procedures to improve velopharyngeal function and speech resonance, is associated with postoperative obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, the relative risk of OSA between different speech surgery procedures remains unclear.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the relative risk of OSA following pharyngeal flap versus nonpharyngeal flap procedures, which included dynamic sphincter pharyngoplasty (DSP), Furlow palatoplasty, and buccal myomu

Pulmonary problems are common in children with Downsyndrome/trisomy 21, alongside other health issues, but are often given too little attention. The aim of this review is to summarize these aspects for pediatric pulmonologists. Narrow nasal passages, a small pharynx and larynx, in combination with relative macroglossia, other airway malformations, and generalized muscular hypotonia, lead to glossoptosis, which in very young infants frequently causes obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. If left untreated, this is associated with impaired cognitive development. The children also suffer from chronic

During surgery for congenital heart disease (CHD) temperature management is crucial. Vesical (Tves) and nasopharyngeal (TNPH) temperature are usually measured. Whereas Tves slowly responds to temperature changes, TNPH carries the risk of bleeding. The zero-heat-flux (ZHF) temperature monitoring systems SpotOn™ (TSpotOn), and Tcore™ (Tcore) measure temperature non-invasively. We evaluated accuracy and precision of the non-invasive devices, and of Tves compared to TNPH for estimating temperature. In this prospective observational study in pediatric and adult patients accuracy and precision of TS
