An Evaluation of Language Preference between Spanish and English with Picture Exchange Users.

BACKGROUND: Puberty is a crucial developmental milestone that involves significant physiological, emotional, and behavioral changes. Early puberty onset, influenced by both biological and social factors, is associated with an increased risk of engaging in substance use, such as tobacco and marijuana. While high family income is generally linked to delayed puberty onset and lower behavioral risks, these benefits may not be equally protective for Black youth due to the phenomenon of Minorities' Diminished Returns (MDRs). MDRs suggest that higher family income does not offer the same protective e

Case Report: Gas in the esophagus, stomach wall and portal vein with congenital hypertrophic pyloric stenosis.

BACKGROUND: CHPS dramatically affects infant growth and development and can even cause aspiration resulting from esophageal reflux. There is potential danger. CHPS is common, while CHPS with gas in the stomach wall and portal vein is rare. Gas in the stomach wall and portal vein are often the key features of more serious disease. It can be easily mistaken as a serious disease when patients with CHPS have gas in the stomach wall and portal vein. CASE PRESENTATION: A 56-day-old baby was hospitalized for aspiration pneumonia after vomiting without bile for 20 days. Compared with vomiting, which

Applications of gastric peroral endoscopic myotomy in the treatment of upper gastrointestinal tract disease.

Gastric peroral endoscopic myotomy (G-POME) is an emerging minimally invasive endoscopic technique involving the establishment of a submucosal tunnel around the pyloric sphincter. In 2013, Khashab et al used G-POME for the first time in the treatment of gastroparesis with enhanced therapeutic efficacy, providing a new direction for the treatment of gastroparesis. With the recent and rapid development of G-POME therapy technology, progress has been made in the treatment of gastroparesis and other upper digestive tract diseases, such as congenital hypertrophic pyloric stenosis and gastric sleeve

Pyloric stenosis secondary to peptic ulcer disease in pediatric patients: A case report and review of the literature.

RATIONALE: Pediatric pyloric obstruction is a condition characterized by complete or incomplete obstruction of the distal stomach caused by obstructive lesions of the distal stomach, pyloric duct, or proximal duodenum. Congenital hypertrophic pyloric stenosis is the most common cause of pediatric pyloric obstruction, whereas acquired pyloric stenosis is comparatively rare, with peptic ulcer disease being the most common cause. PATIENT CONCERNS: We describe a case of a 5-year-old girl who had peptic ulcer disease and developed scarring pyloric stenosis. We also give comprehensive details of th

Congenital Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis in a Preterm Dizygotic Female Twin Infant: Case Report.

Infants with hypertrophic pyloric stenosis are usually diagnosed at about 3 to 8 weeks of age. The clinical onset of symptoms in preterm babies is observed normally at a later age than in term or post-term newborns. This report describes a rare case of a 2-day old preterm twin girl presenting with drinking laziness and recurrent vomiting. Five days after the beginning of symptoms and after several studies, including an upper gastrointestinal contrast study, the diagnosis of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis was made and confirmed at surgery. The postoperative course was uneventful. Interestingly,

Gastric Peroral Endoscopic Pyloromyotomy for Infants With Congenital Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (CHPS), the most common infantile disease requiring surgical intervention, is routinely treated with open or laparoscopic pyloromyotomy. Recently, gastric peroral endoscopic pyloromyotomy (G-POEM) has been used for adult gastroparesis. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of G-POEM in treating infantile CHPS. METHODS: We reviewed data from 21 G-POEM-treated patients at 3 tertiary children's endoscopic centers in China between January 2019 and December 2020. Clinical characteristics, procedure-related parameters, perioperative mana

Diagnostic Accuracy of Acid-Base Status in Infants with Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis.

Background: Hypertrophic pyloric stenosis is a condition in newborns in which the hypertrophic pyloric muscle causes gastric obstructive symptoms of progressive vomiting leading to hypochloremic hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis. The main aim of the research was to assess whether, based on the acid-base status, we can distinguish newborns who vomit due to pylorostenosis, compared with newborns who vomit for other unspecific reasons. Methods: The electronic records of patients in the hospital information system treated under the diagnosis Q40.0 (Congenital hypertrophic pyloric stenosis) (n = 69/i

Laparoscopic pyloromyotomy for congenital hypertrophic pyloric stenosis: Our experience with twenty cases.

PURPOSE: Laparoscopic pyloromyotomy for hypertrophic pyloric stenosis has become quite popular over the past decade. There have been many modifications in the technique initially described by Alain et al. in 1991. We describe our experience of the laparoscopic procedure performed in twenty cases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study includes twenty patients of pyloric stenosis who underwent laparoscopic pyloromyotomy from March 2017 to March 2020. All the infants had classical clinical symptoms and abdominal ultrasound confirming the diagnosis of pyloric stenosis. Two 3-mm ports and one 5-mm por

Single-Site Umbilical Laparoscopic Pyloromyotomy Using a Pyloric Electrocoagulation Chisel Combined with a Left-Handed Main Operation for Congenital Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis.

Background: Laparoscopic pyloromyotomy has become a gold standard for the treatment of congenital hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (HPS). There have been recent reports on the use of transumbilical single-site laparoscopic surgery for congenital HPS; however, using transumbilical single-site laparoscopic surgery in pediatric cases is still controversial due to the difficulty with manipulation. In this study, some preliminary experience with the application of a novel transumbilical single-site laparoscopic approach in congenital HPS is described. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted invol

Leveraging a phenome-wide approach to identify novel exposure-birth defect associations: A proof of concept using maternal smoking and a spectrum of birth defects.

BACKGROUND: There are often questions about the impact of exposures on a range of birth defects, but there are few rigorous approaches for evaluating these associations. Using maternal smoking as an example we applied a phenome-wide association study (PheWAS) approach to evaluate the impact of this exposure on a comprehensive range of birth defects. METHODS: Cases were obtained from the Texas Birth Defects Registry for the period 1999-2015. A total of 127 birth defects were examined. Maternal smoking at any time during the pregnancy was ascertained from the vital record. Data were randomly di
