Inverted U-shaped relationship between diverticular width and gastrointestinal bleeding in symptomatic Meckel's diverticulum children: a retrospective single-center study.

OBJECTIVE: Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital gastrointestinal malformation in children, with gastrointestinal bleeding being the most frequent associated complication. While existing studies have primarily focused on ectopic mucosa and diverticulum length as predictors of complications, no research has specifically evaluated the association between diverticulum width and MD symptoms, particularly gastrointestinal bleeding. This study aimed to determine whether diverticulum width is an independent predictor of gastrointestinal bleeding risk in symptomatic patients, and to

Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia Repair in Pediatric Female Patients Using Cautery and Endoloops: Description of Technique and Outcomes.

PURPOSE: Multiple techniques have been described for laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair in children. The purpose of this study was to describe our experience using cautery and Endoloops in pediatric female patients. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of pediatric female patients who underwent laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair using cautery and Endoloops at our center. This technique involves establishing laparoscopic access through the umbilicus, everting and cauterizing the hernia sac with a Maryland dissector, and placing two PDS Endoloops at the level of the internal ring. Out

Reevaluating the rule of two's: Age and epidemiological variations in Meckel's diverticulum.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical characteristics, diagnostic modalities, and age-related variation of Meckel's diverticulum (MD) using data from a nationwide pediatric inpatient database and a single-center institutional cohort. METHODS: The Kids' Inpatient Database (KID) for 2016 and 2019 was queried for patients with a principal diagnosis of MD. We additionally conducted a retrospective review of patients hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of MD at our institution over a 20-year period (January 1, 2005-May 1, 2025). Diagnosis was confirmed by surgical findings and pathology. RESULTS:

Minimally invasive management of patent vitello-intestinal duct in an adult.

The patent vitello-intestinal duct (PVID) is a persistent embryological remnant of the omphalomesenteric duct, which normally connects the yolk sac to the primitive midgut, and it is obliterated between the 8 th and 9 th weeks of gestation. Failure of this involution results in a spectrum of anomalies, including Meckel's diverticulum, umbilical sinus, fistula, and cyst. Although such remnants are present in approximately 2% of the population, symptomatic presentation in adulthood is exceedingly rare. We report the case of a 30-year-old male who presented with foul-smelling umbilical discharge

Endoscopic classification of Meckel's diverticulum in adults: a multicenter retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital gastrointestinal malformation. Balloon-assisted enteroscopy (BAE) permits direct visualization in adults, but no standardized endoscopic classification exists. We developed an endoscopic framework for adult MD and evaluated its clinical utility and association with disease severity. METHODS: In this multicenter retrospective study, we enrolled 226 symptomatic adults with BAE-diagnosed MD at three tertiary centers from May 2007 to May 2024. Based on morphology and mucosal characteristics, MD was assigned to three primary cate

Clinical and Anatomical Spectrum of Meckel's Diverticulum: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Introduction: Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, resulting from incomplete involution of the vitelline duct during the fifth to seventh week of gestation. This study aimed to assess the prevalence, anatomical features, clinical manifestations, and heterotopic tissue of MD through a comprehensive meta-analysis of studies reporting on this anomaly. Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, SciELO, BIOSIS, Current Contents Connect, and the Korean Journal Database was conducted up to March 2024 follow

A Rare Case of Giant Meckel's Diverticulum in an Adult: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Challenges.

Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, resulting from incomplete obliteration of the vitelline duct. Typically located within 2 feet of the ileocecal valve, it occurs in approximately 2% of the population. While often asymptomatic and most commonly diagnosed in pediatric patients, Meckel's diverticulum in adults is rare and frequently presents with complications such as obstruction, inflammation, ischemia, or perforation. Its non-specific clinical presentation in adults can make diagnosis challenging and often delays definitive management unt

Diagnostic and Therapeutic Challenges of Symptomatic Meckel's Diverticulum in a 61-Year-Old Man With Comorbid Rectal Adenocarcinoma.

Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, yet it remains a diagnostic challenge in adults due to its non-specific presentation and lower prevalence compared to the pediatric population. We report the case of a 61-year-old man with a history of rectosigmoid adenocarcinoma who presented with recurrent, life-threatening hematochezia from a diverting loop ileostomy. After inconclusive endoscopic and computed tomography (CT) evaluations, mesenteric angiography identified an aberrant omphalomesenteric (vitelline) artery supplying an MD. Following

Shifting growth-climate limitations in Canadian forests under recent climate change.

INTRODUCTION: Although the etiology of osteoporosis is different between men and women, the underlying pathophysiological mechanism is similar, namely an absolute or relative increase in bone resorption, leading to progressive bone loss. Transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta1 is a growth factor in human bone, which is produced by osteoblasts, and which has various effects on osteoclasts and osteoblasts. The aim of our study was to determine serum TGF-beta1 levels in male patients with idiopathic osteoporosis. METHODS: Twenty five males with idiopathic osteoporosis and 25 age-matched controls

Rare and Unusual Consequences of Blunt Abdominal Trauma-The Significance of Anatomical Anomalies.

Background/Objectives: Blunt abdominal trauma is a frequent challenge in emergency medicine, but its diagnosis and treatment become significantly more complex when rare anatomical anomalies are present. Atypical anatomy may mask symptoms or mimic other acute abdominal conditions, causing delays in treatment. The aim of this paper is to review the literature on six rare anatomical anomalies and their impact on the consequences of blunt abdominal trauma. Methods: A Narrative literature review was undertaken, covering PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar databases, analysing publicat

"Incidentaloma" as Occasional Finding During Laparoscopic Surgery: How Laparoscopy Makes The Difference!

BACKGROUND: In the scientific nomenclature, "incidentaloma" is the medical term to describe incidentally found asymptomatic tumors. We adapted the term "incidentaloma" to describe the finding of additional pathology during laparoscopic surgery conducted for a different indication. This study aimed to highlight the role of laparoscopy in identifying and addressing hidden concurrent conditions, thereby preventing the need for further surgical interventions. METHODS: Five hundred ninety-five patients undergoing laparoscopic procedures from January 2018 to January 2023 were enrolled. Patients wer

Urothelial Bladder Carcinoma Incidentally Coexisting with an Ileovesical Fistula Caused by Perforation of Meckel's Diverticulum: A Case Report.

Background and Clinical Significance: Enterovesical fistulas are uncommon and are most often caused by inflammatory conditions. Cases caused by Meckel's diverticulum are exceptionally rare, with only a few cases reported in the literature. To our knowledge, no previous reports have described an ileovesical fistula due to Meckel's diverticulum coexisting with urothelial carcinoma. Case Presentation: A 74-year-old man was evaluated after presenting with fever and diagnosed with an ileovesical fistula. Since cystoscopy findings could not completely exclude bladder cancer, transurethral resection

Integrated Morphological Analysis Of The Small Intestine In The Pekin Duck's (Anas platyrhynchos) Using Gross Anatomical, Histological, Histochemical, and Scanning Electron Microscopic Techniques.

The adult White Pekin duck's small intestine is anatomically adapted for rapid growth, high-fat diet digestion, and strong immunity, essential for its physiological needs. This study analyzes the adaptive anatomical features of the small intestine-duodenum, jejunum, and ileum-through gross examination, light microscopy (LM), histochemical techniques, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and morphometric analysis. To achieve this objective, sixteen ducks were examined. Gross examination revealed a U-shaped duodenum, a coiled jejunum with Meckel's diverticulum, and a straight ileum attached to pa
