Long-Term Outcomes, Including Fetal and Neonatal Prognosis, of Renal Oligohydramnios: A Retrospective Study over 22 Years.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the long-term outcome of renal oligohydramnios and risk factors for fetal, neonatal, and postneonatal death. STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective cohort study included fetuses with prenatally detected renal oligohydramnios between 2002 and 2023. Patients who were lost to follow-up were excluded. Fetal, neonatal, and long-term outcomes were evaluated, and their risk factors were analyzed. RESULTS: Of 131 fetuses with renal oligohydramnios, 46 (35%) underwent a termination of pregnancy, 11 (8%) had an intrauterine fetal death, 26 (20%) had a neonatal death, nine (7%) had a pos

The role of bone ring technique for bone augmentation in implant surgery: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Congenital deafness is commonest birth defect and it affects 2-4 neonates among 1000 live births. Detection and intervention especially before 6 months of age prevents severe linguistic, educational and psychosocial repercussions and helps the deaf child in the development of normal speech and language. Children who are identified after 6 months of age experience great difficulties in attaining speech and language.. METHODS: To find out the frequency of hearing loss in neonates, a hospital based observational study was conducted in Combined Military Hospital Abbottabad from June-t

Multi-modality imaging review of congenital abnormalities of kidney and upper urinary tract.

Congenital abnormalities of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) include a wide range of abnormalities ranging from asymptomatic ectopic kidneys to life threatening renal agenesis (bilateral). Many of them are detected in the antenatal or immediate postnatal with a significant proportion identified in the adult population with varying degree of severity. CAKUT can be classified on embryological basis in to abnormalities in the renal parenchymal development, aberrant embryonic migration and abnormalities of the collecting system. Renal parenchymal abnormalities include multi cystic dysplastic k

Unilateral renal agenesis associated with additional congenital abnormalities of the urinary tract in a Pekingese bitch.

An eight-month-old Pekingese bitch with urinary incontinence was found to have three congenital anomalies of the urinary tract: left renal agenesis, bilateral ectopic ureters with a left cranial blind-ending ureter, and urinary bladder hypoplasia. The diagnoses were made by retrograde vaginourethrography, excretory urography, ultrasonography and duplex Doppler ultrasonography. Although urological anomalies associated with renal agenesis have been frequently observed, a cranial blind-end ectopic ureter has not, to the authors' knowledge, been described in the bitch. The dog was managed medicall

Interstitial deletion of chromosome 1q [del(1)(q24q25.3)] identified by fluorescence in situ hybridization and gene dosage analysis of apolipoprotein A-II, coagulation factor V, and antithrombin III.

We report on a 12-month-old Japanese boy with an interstitial deletion of the long-arm of chromosome 1 and meningomyelocele, hydrocephalus, anal atresia, atrial septal defect, left renal agenesis, bilateral cryptorchidism, talipes equinovarus, low birth weight, growth/developmental retardation, and many minor anomalies. By conventional GTG-banding, his karyotype was first interpreted as 46,XY,del(1)(q23q24), but it was corrected as 46,XY.ish del(1)(q24q25.3) by fluorescence in situ hybridization using 11 known cosmid clones as probes. His serum levels of apolipoprotein A-II (gene symbol: APOA2

Prenatal ultrasonic detection of anomalies with a lethal or disastrous outcome.

Although rare, a number of fetal anomalies can be detected with ultrasound in which the prognosis is either fetal death or minimal development. Anomalies of this type include anencephaly, holoprosencephaly, hydranencephaly, iniencephaly, cystic hygroma with hydrops, cystadenomatoid malformation of the lung with hydrops, conjoined twins of some types, renal agenesis, bilateral renal dysplasia, lethal dwarfing syndromes, and some forms of hydrops. Syndromes in which the severe form only are fatal include intracranial teratoma, encephalocele, pentalogy of Cantrell, vein of Galen aneurysm, the lim

Ultrasound diagnosis and perinatal management of fetal genito-urinary abnormalities.

Approximately 50% of fetal abdominal masses originate in the urinary system and those recognizable ultrasonically include renal dysplasia, renal agenesis and obstruction of the lower excretory channels. Fetal renal anomalies may be discovered co-incidentally during the course of sonographic evaluation of uterine size-dates discrepancy, because they are commonly associated with fetal growth retardation and/or oligohydramnios, or during a planned sonographic follow-up of pregnancies in patients who are at risk of recurrence of such anomalies. The sonographic demonstration of renal anomalies unde

Familial nature of congenital absence and severe dysgenesis of both kidneys.

Seventy-one parents and 40 siblings of 41 index patients with bilateral renal agenesis, bilateral severe dysgenesis, or agenesis of one kidney and dysgenesis of the other were evaluated by gray-scale ultrasonography for genitourinary malformations. Nine per cent (10 of 111) had asymptomatic renal malformations, most often unilateral renal agenesis (4.5 per cent--a frequency that was significantly higher than the frequency of 0.3 per cent among 682 adults [P less than 0.004]). We recommend ultrasonographic screening for parents and siblings of infants born with agenesis or dysgenesis of both ki

Renal agenesis as a diagnostic feature of the cryptophthalmos-syndactyly syndrome.

Four families with the cryptophthalmos-syndactyly syndrome are reported. Nine affected patients died in perinatal period. Autopsy, performed in 6 cases, revealed renal agenesis (bilateral in 3 and unilateral in 3 cases). These observations together with recent literature data suggest that renal malformations (agenesis or severe hypoplasia) are one of the most common features of the cryptophthalmos-syndactyly syndrome and may serve as one of diagnostic criteria for this entity.
