Etiology and outcomes of fetal renal abnormalities in Southern China: a single-tertiary-center study.

BACKGROUND: Although renal abnormalities are common during fetal growth, the etiology remains largely unclear. This study aimed to determine the outcomes of fetuses with renal anomalies and the corresponding etiologies. We retrospectively analyzed data from 1,019 cases for which chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) was performed; 58 CMA-negative fetuses were selected for whole-exome sequencing (WES). RESULTS: Pathogenic copy-number variations were detected in 88 (8.6%) cases, comprising 25 aneuploidies, 10 macrodeletions/macroduplications, and 53 microdeletions/microduplications. Among the l

Retroperitoneoscopic Vascular Hitch Procedure for Pelvi-Ureteric Junction Obstruction in Children-The Southampton Experience.

Purpose: There has been a longstanding debate regarding whether lower pole renal crossing vessels on the pelvi-ureteric junction preclude the need for a dismembered pyeloplasty. A retroperitoneoscopic technique for a transposition of these vessels has not yet been described in the literature. We report our early experience of the retroperitoneoscopic vascular hitch procedure for transposition of lower pole renal crossing vessels, including technique and outcomes. Methods: Single-center retrospective review of all children who had a retroperitoneoscopic vascular hitch procedure for pelvi-ureter

Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser Syndrome: Where Does Gynaecological Pathology End and Renal Disease Begin? The Value of a Comprehensive View. Two Case Reports with Adult Onset Kidney Disease and A Review of the Literature.

Background. Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome is a rare congenital condition marked by agenesis or hypoplasia of the upper female reproductive tract. While it is typically recognized for its reproductive implications, renal anomalies - such as unilateral renal agenesis or ectopic kidneys - are also frequent but often underdiagnosed. Recent findings suggest shared embryological origins between the genital and urinary systems, supporting the need for a broader diagnostic and therapeutic perspective. Case Description. We describe two cases of women with MRKH syndrome diagnosed in ado

Prenatal imaging of upper urinary tract abnormalities: when is MRI useful?

Upper urinary tract abnormalities are commonly encountered on fetal imaging. While ultrasound (US) remains the primary imaging modality for evaluation of the fetal kidneys, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can play a significant complementary role in the diagnosis and management of these patients with upper urinary tract abnormalities. This paper will review the most common prenatal pathologies encountered in the kidneys, including urinary tract dilatation (UTD), renal agenesis, renal ectopia, multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK), and other cystic renal diseases, and will include a discussion

Prenatal diagnosis of fetuses with renal abnormalities: a retrospective analysis of 329 Chinese cases.

BACKGROUND: There is no clear guidance on prenatal diagnostic testing strategies for congenital renal anomalies. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the retrospective analysis of ultrasound and genetic diagnostic results in cases of fetal renal abnormalities and to establish genotype-phenotype correlations. METHODS: A total of 329 fetuses with renal abnormalities that underwent prenatal diagnostic testing from January 2020 to April 2023 were recruited in this study. These cases were classified into 11 subgroups based on their ultrasound diagnosis. All cases underwent chromosomal microar

Missense mutation (Ser654Leu) in the ITGA8 gene associated with renal hypodysplasia: A case report.

Renal hypodysplasia is a congenital kidney anomaly that occurs when part of the kidney does not fully develop in the womb. Numerous genes have been identified that when mutated, result in renal dysplasia. This has encouraged the authors to search for additional genes and variants potentially linked to renal anomalies. Using next-generation sequencing combined with Sanger sequencing, a missense variant in the ITGA8 gene (NM_003638.2:c.1961C>T; p.Ser654Leu) associated with renal hypodysplasia was identified. Detailed studies on this variant revealed that Ser654 is conserved across species, and t

Posterior Urethral Valves and Fertility: Insight on Paternity Rates and Seminal Parameters.

BACKGROUND: Posterior urethral valves (PUVs) represent the most common cause of male congenital lower urinary tract obstruction, often responsible for renal dysplasia and chronic renal failure. Despite recent improvements in patients' outcomes thanks to prenatal ultrasound early diagnosis, PUVs can still impact sexual function and fertility. This study aims to review the available evidence on fertility in PUV patients, examining paternity rates and semen parameters. METHODS: A review was conducted of the PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, and Embase databases. Studies focusing on fertility and paterni

Lung Growth and Intrapulmonary Circulation in Fetuses With Anhydramnios Due to Severe Renal Anomalies Treated With Serial Amnioinfusions.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate changes in fetal lung size/volume and intrapulmonary circulation after serial amnioinfusions (AMI) in fetuses with early anhydramnios. METHODS: Ten fetuses with anhydramnios due to renal agenesis (n = 4) or renal dysplasia (n = 6) were treated with serial AMIs. Before AMI, the following ultrasound parameters were obtained: fetal lung area, total lung volume (TLV), O/E LHR, thorax circumference (TC), cardiothoracic ratio (CTR), and pulsatility index of the main intrapulmonary artery (IPA). Differences in lung biometrics between the first and last AMIs are reported. RESU

Mini-laparotomy to avoid vascular injury during fetoscopic laser ablation in a case of twin-twin transfusion syndrome with anterior wall placenta: Report of a case complicated with renal dysplasia and cord-around-trunk in donor cotwin and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: Twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) is a special complication of monochorionic (MC) twins, with unbalanced flows through vascular anastomoses within the placenta, causing hemodynamic derangement that can adversely affect perinatal outcome. The initial clinical manifestations of TTTS may be hypovolemic and oliguric of the donor cotwin (the "struck" twin), and hypervolemia and polyureic of the recipient cotwin under prenatal ultrasound. However, the mortality rate can reach 90 % if left untreated. Fetoscopic laser ablation (FLA) is considered the golden treatment standard of TTTS. H
