Beyond BMI: The Role of Anthropometric Measurements in Predicting Plantar Pressure Distribution and Gait Biomechanics.

Plantar pressure (PP) is a key biomechanical parameter for assessing foot function, gait abnormalities, and injury risk. Although body mass index (BMI) correlates with PP magnitude/distribution during gait, it is a coarse metric that collapses body composition into a ratio of mass to height, implicitly assuming uniform body proportions and mass distribution. The effects of individualized anthropometric parameters on PP signatures remain under-characterized, with a gap in incorporating body-shape measures beyond BMI. This exploratory study examined associations among anthropometric measurements

The Use of Artificial Intelligence in Idiopathic Clubfoot: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: The past decade has been marked by the progressive integration of artificial intelligence (AI), especially in the form of machine learning and deep learning. Pediatric orthopaedics remains an underexplored area in AI, especially in the context of congenital deformities such as clubfoot. OBJECTIVE: A scoping review would help organize the various uses of AI in this domain by identifying studies and categorizing them based on the technique used and their applications, exposing gaps, and informing future studies to support AI integration in pediatric care. METHODS: A Preferred Repor

Early presurgical nasoalveolar molding for bilateral cleft lip and palate: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Bilateral cleft lip and palate is a severe orofacial anomaly associated with wide alveolar defects and complex nasal deformities. Surgical repair of such a defect is challenging and increases the risk of compromised esthetic and functional outcomes. Early presurgical nasoalveolar molding (PNAM) is a non-surgical orthopedic technique used to reduce cleft severity and improve nasal form prior to surgical repair. This case demonstrates the tangible clinical benefits of early intervention in optimizing surgical conditions and outcomes in a complex bilateral cleft presentation. CASE PR

Factors predicting blood transfusion in endoscopic metopic strip craniectomy-analysis of 102 consecutive cases.

PURPOSE: Endoscopic strip craniectomy (ESC) provides a safe surgical approach for the management of metopic craniosynostosis. However, it has a higher reported blood transfusion requirement than ESC for other sutures. We sought identify factors that may be related to greater blood transfusion use. METHOD: Retrospective consecutive case series. All metopic ESC cases were identified from the institutional database. Case notes reviewed following pre-drafted proforma, with regression analysis to identify risk factors for transfusion. RESULTS: One hundred two consecutive cases of ESC for metopic

The short-term and long-term effect of burn on organ dysfunction: mechanisms and strategies.

Burns constitute a form of severe trauma and may affect multi-organ systems. Secondary multi-organ dysfunction is the primary driver of disability, death, and poor prognosis in patients with severe burns, and has become a pressing global public health challenge. In the acute phase of burns, hypovolemic shock and uncontrolled systemic inflammatory response are the most important lethal mechanisms. In addition to localized skin damage, burns can rapidly induce acute dysfunction in the cardiovascular, immune, endocrine, coagulation, musculoskeletal, digestive, and central nervous systems. The pat

Inducible chronic NAD deficiency in mice reveals multi-systemic phenotypical, metabolic, and transcriptional changes.

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) is a metabolic cofactor regulating energy metabolism, epigenetics, DNA repair, and signaling. Although NAD declines with vitamin B3 deficiency, disease, and aging, systemic consequences of chronic depletion remain unclear. Here, we characterize an in vivo model of inducible NAD deficiency using acquired niacin dependency (ANDY) mice, in which NAD synthesis becomes dependent on dietary niacin. On a niacin-free diet, ANDY mice developed widespread tissue NAD depletion and sex-independent multisystem abnormalities, including kyphosis, reduced bone, lean, an

Left pulmonary artery from the common carotid artery in DiGeorge syndrome: a case of ductal stenting as bridge to repair.

DiGeorge syndrome is associated with a wide spectrum of cardiovascular anomalies. We present a rare and anatomically complex arch anomaly in this context. A male newborn with prenatally diagnosed DiGeorge syndrome and a right aortic arch was suspected of having a left pulmonary artery arising from the ascending aorta. Postnatal multimodal imaging revealed a discontinuous left pulmonary artery originating anomalously from the left common carotid artery via a left-sided ductus arteriosus, which later developed significant stenosis. To preserve left pulmonary artery flow and promote its growth, p

[Branchial cleft anomalies of the neck : Embryology, clinical presentation, and management].

Branchial cleft anomalies are the second most common congenital neck lesion. They present as cysts, sinuses, or fistulas arising from remnants of the pharyngeal apparatus; second arch anomalies predominate. The embryologic origin determines their anatomical relationships to nerves, vessels, and the pharynx and guides diagnosis and surgical planning. Typical findings are cervical swelling, cutaneous discharge, or recurrent infection. Third and fourth branchial anomalies may cause recurrent neck abscesses or acute suppurative thyroiditis, particularly in children. Ultrasonography is the primary

Inherited and early-life vulnerability in functional neurological disorder and functional somatic symptoms: A retrospective cohort and case-control study from a large electronic health record database.

BACKGROUND: Biological factors affecting motor, sensory, and integrative processing may predispose to functional neurological disorder (FND) and functional somatic symptoms. While early-life influences have traditionally been conceptualized within psychological frameworks, the contribution of early-life biological vulnerabilities to symptom expression remains unclear. METHODS: Using TriNetX, a large electronic health records database, we assessed proportions of inherited, congenital, perinatal, and neurodevelopmental diagnoses, capturing a range of early-life conditions. We compared 188,868 i

PSDiffusion: Symmetry-Aware Diffusion for Harmonious Portrait Cast Shadow Removal.

Portrait cast shadow removal is a critical yet challenging task in computer vision and portrait editing. Current methods mainly rely on planar features, such as facial landmarks, to assist in cast shadow removal and often fail to fully exploit the geometric information of the face. Moreover, current methods often ignore the asymmetry of facial details and self-shadows caused by lighting orientations. In this work, we propose a Portrait Shadow Diffusion (PSDiffusion) framework to address these challenges. PSDiffusion combines diffusion models with facial geometry and illumination, achieving del

Complicated labral injuries in female patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip are associated with localized stress concentration in the superior acetabulum.

INTRODUCTION: Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) alters joint mechanics and increases the risk of labral injury, compromising hip stability and leading to abnormal stress distribution and cartilage degeneration. However, the relationship between labral injury severity and joint loading stress in DDH remains unclear. This study investigated the effect of labral injury severity on stress distribution in DDH patients using computed tomography osteoabsorptometry (CT-OAM) and finite element analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed 54 hips from 45 female patients undergoing joint-preservi

The pathophysiology of wild-type transthyretin amyloidosis: implications for exercise intolerance.

Wild-type transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTRwt) is an age-associated protein misfolding disorder marked by extracellular deposition of transthyretin fibrils within the myocardium, peripheral nerves, lungs, blood vessels, and musculoskeletal tissues. ATTRwt typically presents as a restrictive cardiomyopathy with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction that contributes to the development of hallmark symptoms such as exercise intolerance. Amyloid infiltration severely impairs ventricular compliance and diastolic reserve, limiting stroke volume and cardiac output augmentation during exercise, an

Immediate Effects of a Wearable Thermoplastic Polyurethane Arch Pad Sock on Lower-Extremity Muscle Activity in Adults with Flexible Flatfoot.

Flatfoot (pes planus) is a common foot deformity associated with altered lower-extremity muscle activity during gait. Conventional foot orthoses and insoles can provide arch support but have limitations related to comfort, adherence, and everyday usability. This study evaluated the immediate effects of a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) arch pad sock on lower-extremity muscle activity in adults with flexible flatfoot. Twenty adults with flexible flatfoot participated. Surface electromyography signals were recorded bilaterally from the tibialis anterior (TA), peroneus longus (PL), medial gastro

ASH2L-mediated H3K4me3 methylation governs palatal development by regulating WNT5B.

BACKGROUND: Orofacial clefts, particularly cleft palate, are among the most common congenital anomalies, imposing substantial functional impairment and psychosocial burden on affected individuals. Emerging evidence implicates epigenetic modifications, especially histone lysine methylation, as critical regulators of embryonic development, yet their precise roles in palatogenesis remain poorly defined. The H3K4 methyltransferase complexes, which require the core subunit ASH2L for full enzymatic activity, govern transcriptional activation during development; however, whether ASH2L-mediated H3K4me

What Is the Validity of Traction MR Arthrography for Detecting Lesions of the Ligamentous-Fossa-Foveolar Complex in Patients Undergoing Joint-preserving Surgery Through Surgical Hip Dislocation?

BACKGROUND: Accurate preoperative characterization of intraarticular abnormalities is important when planning hip-preserving surgery in young, active patients. Lesions of the ligamentum teres and the associated acetabular fossa and fovea capitis (forming the ligamentous-fossa-foveolar complex [LFFC]) are frequently observed intraoperatively, although their relationship with hip pain in patients without osteoarthritis remains uncertain. These lesions have received limited attention in preoperative imaging. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What is the intraobserver and interobserver reliability of tract
