BACKGROUND: The late diagnosis rate of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) with universal ultrasound screening is 0.2 per 1,000 children according to a recent meta-analysis, which is the same as in Japan where selective ultrasound screening is used. We hypothesized that Finland's current program of universal clinical screening complemented with targeted ultrasound is noninferior to universal and selective ultrasound screening programs.
METHODS: For this retrospective cohort study, we collected the number of children <15 years of age who were diagnosed with DDH (International Classificati

BACKGROUND: Developmental dysplasia of the hip is a common newborn condition characterized by malformation or instability of the hip joint. Identifying dysplasia of the hip early is imperative for avoiding long-term consequences. In the United States, dysplasia of the hip screening of newborns uses the Ortolani and Barlow maneuvers. However, evidence suggests that inadequate training in these techniques may lead to unnecessary imaging referrals for further assessment. We investigated the impact of a dysplasia of the hip simulator (MiHip) and its associated training program on ultrasound referr

BACKGROUND: The sequelae of open reduction of developmental and/or syndromic hip dislocations include osteonecrosis/proximal femoral growth disturbance and residual dysplasia. There is limited information comparing the rates of these sequelae in patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) and arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC). We performed a dual-center retrospective cohort study to compare rates of proximal femoral growth disturbance and residual dysplasia between patients with DDH and AMC who had undergone open hip reduction for the treatment of non-traumatic hip dislocatio

BACKGROUND: Nerve injury is a major complication of total hip arthroplasty (THA) in patients with Crowe IV developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), and its incidence is influenced by the type of surgical approach used. The aim of this study was to compare the recently developed direct anterior approach (DAA) and the classic posterior approach (PA) regarding the characteristics of nerve injuries in Crowe IV DDH patients.
METHODS: A total of 149 Crowe IV DDH patients who underwent THA were retrospectively included and divided into 2 groups based on surgical approach (DAA: 68 patients and PA: 8

BACKGROUND: Hip dysplasia (HD) at skeletal maturity can result from residual developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) treated in childhood or from primary adolescent-onset HD (AOHD). This study aims to compare the pathomorphology of these two HD subtypes with that of a normal control group.
METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed patients who underwent periacetabular osteotomy for symptomatic HD between 2013 and 2020. The study included 27 residual HD patients (32 hips) following a previous pelvic osteotomy and 39 AOHD patients (68 hips), compared to 29 age- and sex-matched healthy individ

BACKGROUND: The Tönnis classification is widely used to quantify the severity of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) based on the epiphyseal ossification center, while the International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI) has proposed an alternative system. However, the pathological morphology associated with these classifications remains inadequately defined.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to elucidate the correlation between the Tönnis classification and the IHDI classification with the pathological morphology of cartilage and soft tissues in DDH.

OBJECTIVE: Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) exhibits abnormalities in hip anatomy, so changes in the acetabular and femoral angles hold clinical relevance. This study aimed to investigate the correlations between acetabular anteversion (AAV) and acetabular abduction (AAB), as well as between combined anteversion and combined abduction in patients with DDH, attempting to give evidence for synchronous torsion of the proximal femur and acetabulum. This study also aimed to propose a new method for predicting acetabular anteversion and combined anteversion angles, respectively, based on ace

BACKGROUND: O'Brien originally described a descending Park-Harris line of the proximal femur in patients treated for developmental dislocation of the hip (DDH), which reportedly predicted the absence of avascular necrosis/proximal femoral growth disturbance (PFGD). However, these findings have not been validated in a modern population using an objective classification system of PFGD. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the diagnostic utility of "O'Brien's Line" as a predictor of PFGD.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients treated with closed or open reduction for unilateral DDH.

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a commonly encountered pathology in everyday pediatric radiology practice. Early detection of the condition and early institution of therapy are crucial in optimizing patient outcomes and preventing long-term morbidity. Ultrasound is the imaging modality of choice in evaluating DDH in patients less than 4 months of age and is also used to evaluate infants undergoing treatment with an abduction device to monitor therapy response. This article will begin with a general review of DDH, including the underlying pathophysiology of the condition and which p

BACKGROUND: Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a prevalent congenital musculoskeletal disorder characterized by structural abnormalities of the hip joint. While its etiology involves genetic and environmental factors, specific genetic mechanisms remain poorly understood. Mutations in the COMP gene (COMP; OMIM: 600310), classically associated with skeletal dysplasias such as pseudoachondroplasia (PSACH) and multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (MED), are rarely linked to isolated DDH.
METHODS: A 29-year-old male proband with familial DDH underwent clinical evaluation and radiographic imaging

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is the most common joint condition in infants, encompassing a complex spectrum of pathologic states that can result in hip instability and dislocation. The most significant risk factors for DDH are breech positioning in the third trimester and family history of hip dysplasia. The condition is more common in females. Diagnosis is based on age-specific physical examination maneuvers and imaging studies. The Ortolani and Barlow maneuvers are the recommended physical examination techniques used to screen infants up to 3 months of age. Ultrasonography is the

Background: Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) encompasses a spectrum of neonatal hip abnormalities that, if not detected and treated early, may lead to long-term orthopedic sequelae. Universal ultrasound screening using Graf's method has been proposed to improve early diagnosis, though its implementation remains heterogeneous in Italy. Objectives: This study aimed to describe the outcomes of a universal ultrasound screening program for DDH conducted in a first-level birth center in northern Italy, evaluating DDH incidence, risk factors, management outcomes, and program feasibility. BACKGROUND: Rotational acetabular osteotomy (RAO) is a joint-preserving procedure that improves femoral head coverage. This procedure is expected to counteract the progression of secondary osteoarthritis of the hip (OA) in young patients who have developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). However, postoperative OA progression still occurs owing to multiple factors. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the factors contributing to postoperative OA progression using patient cohort data with a median follow-up period of 14 years after RAO surgery for DDH without severe OA.
METHODS: The records of pa

CASE: A 21-year-old woman with a history of bilateral developmental dysplasia of the hips (DDH), congenital hip dislocation, and hypermobility syndrome presented with severe bilateral external snapping hips. Following the failure of nonoperative management, bilateral open iliotibial band fasciectomy performed 5 months apart provided significant relief from both the active and passive snapping, as well as complete pain relief at the 12-month follow-up.
CONCLUSION: This case illustrates a preliminary successful operative outcome for severe external snapping hip in a patient with a history of DD

BACKGROUND: Patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) can also present with deformities of the patellofemoral joint, such as femoral trochlear dysplasia. Although previous studies have reported that trochlear dysplasia is clinically important in some patients with DDH, the association between DDH and trochlear dysplasia is still unclear.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Is trochlear dysplasia more common among lower limbs with bilateral DDH, with unilateral DDH, or without DDH (specifically, in the contralateral limb of patients with unilateral DDH)? (2) Is having more severe DDH (as meas

Hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type IV (HSAN4) is a rare neurological disorder characterized by anhidrosis and congenital insensitivity to pain caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in NTRK1. The condition develops because of dorsal root and autonomic ganglion neurodegeneration, which ultimately results in reduced sensation and autonomic neurological dysfunction. We ascertained several neuropathic patients and performed genetic testing using gene panels and exome sequencing (ES). Genetic variants were confirmed by Sanger sequencing. Thirteen families, each with a single affected

INTRODUCTION: The main way that the skin produces Vitamin D, which is necessary for calcium metabolism and skeletal health, is through exposure to ultraviolet B rays. Long-term skin disorders such as ichthyosis can prevent the skin from producing enough Vitamin D, leading to deficiencies and issues with bone health. This report highlights the need to take Vitamin D insufficiency and its sequelae into account in clinical care by presenting a case of genu valgum in a patient with lamellar ichthyosis. Similar correlations have also been shown in earlier research, underscoring the necessity of con
