PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The purpose of the retrospective study was to analyse the success rate and safety of overhead traction in treating decentered hip joints. In patients treated strictly non-operatively, i.e. with no open reduction and no operative management of residual dysplasia performed, acetabular development was assessed once they have reached the skeletal maturity. MATERIAL AND METHODS The restrospective study included a total of 40 patients treated by overhead traction in the period 1999-2002 for developmental dysplasia of the hip (ultrasound classes III.A, III.B, IV according to Graf

PURPOSE: To evaluate the association of labral length with acetabular morphology and clinical symptoms.
METHODS: Patients treated at our hip joint clinic between January 2015 and December 2018 were retrospectively enrolled in the study. Our sample included patients who received a diagnosis of one or more of the following: hip labral tear, femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), and developmental dysplasia of the hip. Patients with osteoarthritis and/or osteonecrosis were excluded. Bilateral labral length was measured as the distance from the acetabular rim to the edge of the labrum at the level o

BACKGROUND: Blood transfusion is a common practice, but it is not without cost and risk. A model that predicts the risk of blood transfusion could guide informed preoperative blood ordering and use of blood loss preventive measures.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop a prediction model of blood transfusion in children with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) undergoing surgery.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort of DDH patients from 2008 to 2017. The included patients were between 1 to 9 years old, underwent anterior open reduction and/or acetabular osteotomy with and without femoral s

The authors describe a case report of a 5-year-old foreign girl with a rare bilateral hip dislocation after a car accident. Young surgeons at the emergency department performed an unsuccessful closed reduction. Since the clinical and ultrasound screening of DDH of all newborns in the Slovak Republic is carried out until the age of 4-6 weeks, the treatment of dislocated hips starts early and the late diagnosed dislocations occur rarely. The aim of the study is to point at differences in DDH screening all over Europe resulting in an increased risk of misdiagnosed patients. Key words:hip dislocat

Objective: To investigate the efficacy of single-portal arthroscopic-assisted reduction technique in the developmental dislocation of the hip in infants. Methods: From January 2014 to December 2016, 12 dislocated hips in 12 children with a median age of 14 months (10 to 20 months) were treated with single-portal arthroscopic-assisted reduction technique. The indication for intervention was failure of closed reduction after bilateral adductor and unilateral iliopsoas release under anesthesia. Adductor and iliopsoas tendon were released routinely through a medial approach. Through the same media

PURPOSE: To investigate the different components of full-field flash electroretinogram (ERG) responses in adult albino and pigmented rats at various time intervals following optic nerve transection (ONT).
METHODS: In adult Sprague-Dawley (SD, albino) and Piebald-Viral-Glaxo (PVG, pigmented) rats, the left optic nerve was transected intraorbitally to induce retinal ganglion cell (RGC) death. ERG responses were recorded simultaneously from both eyes beforehand and at 1, 2, 4, and 12 week intervals after ONT. The ERG a- and b-waves and the scotopic threshold responses (STR) were analyzed in scot

Breech, family history, first born and female sex are the main risk factors described for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). Foot abnormalities and oligohydramnios have also been listed. Recent studies have discredited torticollis, multiple gestation pregnancy, mode of delivery and prematurity as risk factors. Definition of oligohydramnios in the literature is inconsistent. Our aim was to investigate the term oligohydramnios and evaluate whether it should be considered a risk factor for DDH. All live births in our institution between 2001 and 2014 were included. We identified all pregna

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies indicate a familial predisposition for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), especially among first-degree relatives. This study investigated the association between unilateral or bilateral periacetabular osteotomy (PAO), family history of DDH and the degree of relationship with relatives with DDH.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study consisted of 815 consecutive patients undergoing PAO from 1998 to 2016. Information regarding unilateral or bilateral PAO, gender and age at the time of surgery was obtained from the clinical PAO database at Aarhus

BACKGROUND: The appropriate intervention for hip subluxation or dislocation in children affected by cerebral palsy (CP) remains controversial. The purpose of this retrospective study was to report radiographic and clinical outcomes following isolated femoral varus derotational osteotomy (VDRO) in children with CP hip dysplasia. Risk factors for resubluxation and avascular necrosis (AVN) were also examined.
METHODS: A cohort of 100 patients (199 hips) with CP treated with isolated VDRO between 2003 and 2009 was reviewed. All but 1 patient received bilateral surgery. Patients were followed for

BACKGROUND: Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is known to result in smaller femoral head size in toddlers; however, alterations in femoral head size and growth have not been documented in infants.
OBJECTIVE: To determine with ultrasound (US) whether femoral head size and growth are altered in infants (younger than 1 year of age) with severe DDH.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We identified all patients at our tertiary care children's hospital from 2002 to 2014 who underwent US for DDH. We included studies with at least one hip with severe DDH, defined as <25% coverage of the femoral head, and

BACKGROUND: Exstrophy of the bladder is a rare congenital defect seen in 2.15 children out of every 100,000 live births, with the most severe variant, cloacal exstrophy (CE), only occurring in 1 in 200,000. Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) describes a spectrum of disease ranging from mild hip instability to frank dislocation. Underlying malformations, such as myelomeningocele and arthrogryposis, are often associated with the most severe variant of hip dysplasia, teratologic hip dislocation. The varying degrees of severity in DDH have been encountered in classic bladder exstrophy (CBE)

This retrospective study compared the results of one-stage surgery of unilateral and bilateral Tönnis grade 4 hips (high dislocation in developmental hip dysplasia, DDH) : 41 hips, 30 patients. Mean follow-up was 56 months. Pelvic radiographs were evaluated at three time points. Acetabular inclination angle improved significantly in both groups. Results were satisfactory (Severin classes I-II) in 13 hips (68.5%) (unilateral group) and 21 hips (89.5%) (bilateral group). Functional evaluation (McKay classification) at final follow-up revealed satisfactory results in 94.8% (unilateral group) and

BACKGROUND: Most infants with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) are diagnosed within the first 3 months of life. However, late-presenting DDH (defined as a diagnosis after 3 months of age) does occur and often results in more complex treatment and increased long-term complications. Specific risk factors involved in late-presenting DDH are poorly understood, and clearly defining an associated set of factors will aid in screening, detection, and prevention of this condition.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: Using a multicenter database of patients with DDH, we sought to determine whether there were d

INTRODUCTION Larsen syndrome is an autosomal-dominant osteochondrodysplasia characterised by large joint dislocations and craniofacial anomalies. CASE HISTORY We present a rare case of Larsen syndrome with bilateral dislocated hips and knees and severe clubfeet at 7-year follow-up. We undertook bilateral open reduction of both hips at age 8 months. This procedure was preceded by open reduction and left-knee V-Y quadricepsplasty at age 4 months following a failed trial of closed reduction of the left knee. Both feet had a severe deformity (Pirani score of 5.5 and 6.0) and were treated using the
