CAPOS syndrome is an autosomal dominant neurological disorder caused by mutations in the ATP1A3 gene. Initial symptoms, often fever-induced, include recurrent acute ataxic encephalopathy in childhood, featuring cerebellar ataxia, optic atrophy, areflflexia, sensorineural hearing loss, and in some cases, pes cavus. This report details a case of CAPOS syndrome resulting from a maternal ATP1A3 gene mutation. Both the child and her mother exhibited symptoms post-febrile induction, including severe sensorineural hearing loss in both ears, ataxia, areflexia, and decreased vision. Additionally, the pa

CAPOS (cerebellar ataxia, areflexia, pes cavus, optic atrophy, and sensorineural hearing loss) syndrome is a rare genetic disorder caused by the heterozygous mutation, c.2452G > A, in the ATP1A3 gene. CAPOS syndrome involves a characteristic episode in which neuropathy develops after a fever in childhood, and here, we describe the case of a patient with CAPOS syndrome. The patient had repeated episodes of a fever around 74 months of age. Although he could speak at 23 months of age, he presented with hearing difficulty after the fever. Pure-tone audiometry revealed moderate-to-severe bilateral

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a neurological condition that affects musculoskeletal system causing altered balance control, which is governed by constant adjustments by muscular activity and joint positioning. Since the foot is the platform upon which we stand and balance, it is important to study and characterize foot posture abnormalities in CP to better understand their possible effect on multidirectional limits of stability (MDLS) in standing. Our aim was to find relation between foot posture and MDLS in diplegic children. Thirty diplegics (13 pes-planus and 17 pes-cavus) between the age of 6 to

BACKGROUND: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccinations have been administered worldwide, with occasional reports of associated neurological complications. Specifically, the impact of vaccinations on individuals with X-linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1 (CMTX1) is unclear. Patients with CMTX1 can have stroke-like episodes with posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), although this is rare.
CASE SUMMARY: A 39-year-old man was admitted with episodic aphasia and dysphagia for 2 d. He received SARS-CoV-2 vaccination 39

INTRODUCTION: Recessive mutations in the gene encoding the histidine triad nucleotide-binding protein 1 (HINT1) are associated with axonal motor-predominant Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease with neuromyotonia. A total of 24 HINT1 gene mutations have been reported so far. Some of these cases had mild to moderate elevations of creatinine kinase with no earlier reports of muscle biopsy findings in these cases. In this study, we describe a patient with axonal motor-predominant neuropathy and myopathy with rimmed vacuoles, likely due to a novel HINT1 gene mutation.
CASE REPORT: A 35-year-old Afri

Idiopathic toe walking (ITW) describes a condition affecting approximately 4.5% of children. Toe walking is an accompanying symptom for many hereditary disorders. This retrospective study uses next-generation sequencing-panel-diagnosis to investigate the feasibility of genetic testing to research the possible genetic causes of ITW and for differential diagnosis. Data were taken from our inhouse database, the minimum age for participants was 3 years. Underlying neurological or orthopaedic conditions were tested for and ruled out prior to diagnosing ITW. Patients, who experienced complications b

INTRODUCTION: Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) is a group of inherited peripheral neuropathies characterized by wide genotypic and phenotypic variability. The onset is typically in childhood, and the most frequent clinical manifestations are predominantly distal muscle weakness, hypoesthesia, foot deformity (pes cavus) and areflexia. In the long term, complications such as muscle-tendon retractions, extremity deformities, muscle atrophy and pain may occur. Among CMT1, demyelinating and autosomal dominant forms, CMT1G is determined by mutations in the PMP2 myelin protein.

Mutations in the ATP1A3 gene have been associated with several syndromes, including rapid-onset dystonia-parkinsonism, alternating hemiplegia of childhood, and cerebellar ataxia, areflexia, pes cavus, optic atrophy, and sensorineural hearing loss. In this clinical commentary, we report a 2-year-old female patient with de novo pathogenic variant in the ATP1A3 gene associated with an early-onset form of epilepsy with eyelid myoclonia. The patient had frequent eyelid myoclonia occurring 20-30 times per day, without loss of awareness or other motor manifestations. EEG showed generalized polyspikes

This study provided a comprehensive updated review of the biological aspects of children foot morphology across different ages, sex, and weight, aiming to reveal the patterns of normal and pathological changes in children feet during growth and development. This review article comprised 25 papers in total that satisfied the screening standards. The aim was to investigate how weight changes, age and sex affect foot type, and gain a deeper understanding of the prevalent foot deformities that occur during children growth. Three different foot morphological conditions were discussed, specifically

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease is one of the most common inherited neuropathies and can lead to progressive muscular weakness, pes cavus, loss of deep tendon reflexes, distal sensory loss, and gait impairment. There are still no effective drugs or surgical therapies for CMT, and supportive treatment is limited to rehabilitative therapy and surgical treatment of skeletal deformities. Many rehabilitative therapeutic approaches have been proposed, but timing and cadence of rehabilitative intervention are not clearly defined, and long-term follow-up is lacking in literature. The aim of this rea

Morton's neuroma (MN) is a compressive neuropathy of the common digital plantar nerve causing forefoot pain. Foot posture and altered plantar pressure distribution have been identified as predispoing factors, however no studies have compared individuls with different foot postures with MN. Thus, we aimed to compare the effect of MN on spatiotemporal gait parameters and foot-pressure distribution in individuals with pes planus and pes cavus. Thirty-eight patients with unilateral MN were evaluated between June and August 2021. Nineteen patients with bilateral pes planus and 19 age and gender-mat

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is initially characterized by a rigid-akinetic syndrome and later by the development of postural instability. This condition often leads to balance impairments, potentially resulting in postural deformities and foot asymmetry. This study aimed to assess balance changes in PD patients.
METHODS: We evaluated 56 PD patients and 30 controls using static posturography. The variables examined included foot type, the primary region of body weight distribution on the plantar surface, statokinesigram (center of pressure [COP]), and stabilogram (COP in the X- and Y-
