Long Term Treatment of Corticostreroids May Cause Hepatotoxicity and Oxidative Damage: A Case Controlled Study.

Bacterial populations present in Hg-rich environments have evolved biological mechanisms to detoxify methylmercury and other organometallic mercury compounds. The most common resistance mechanism relies on the H(+)-assisted cleavage of the Hg-C bond of methylmercury by the organomercurial lyase MerB. Although the initial reaction steps which lead to the loss of methane from methylmercury have already been studied experimentally and computationally, the reaction steps leading to the removal of Hg(2+) from MerB and regeneration of the active site for a new round of catalysis have not yet been el

Readability of Online Patient Education Materials for Congenital Hand Differences.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study is to assess the readability of online patient education materials (PEMs) for congenital hand differences. METHODS: The top 10 online, English-language PEMs for 10 conditions (polydactyly, syndactyly, trigger finger/thumb, clinodactyly, camptodactyly, symbrachydactyly, thumb hypoplasia, radial dysplasia, reduction defect, and amniotic band syndrome) were compiled and categorized by source and country. Readability was assessed using 5 tools: Flesch Reading Ease Score (FRES), Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (FKGL), Gunning Fog Index (GFI), Coleman-Liau Index (CLI), a

Orthopedic Surgical Management of Complicated Congenital Popliteal Pterygium Syndrome: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Popliteal pterygium syndrome (PPS) is a rare autosomal-dominant condition that causes fixed flexion deformity of the knee. The popliteal webbing and shortening of the surrounding soft tissue could limit the functionality of the affected limb unless it is surgically corrected. We reported a case of PPS in a pediatric patient encountered in our hospital. CASE: A 10-month-old boy came with a congenital abnormally flexed left knee with bilateral undescended testis and syndactyly of the left foot. The left popliteal pterygium extending from the buttock to the calcaneus was observed,

A rare coexistence: Poland's syndrome and cardiac angiosarcoma.

Poland's syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that accompanies malignancies, musculoskeletal disorders, cardiac and genitourinary syndromes. There is no study that represents the association between cardiac angiosarcoma and Poland's syndrome. A 24-year-old female patient previously diagnosed with Poland's syndrome was admitted to our hospital complaining of dyspnea. Diagnostic imaging showed an irregular mass in the right atrial cavity. After successful surgery, she was discharged uneventfully and the 3rd month oncologic follow-up reveals none of residual mass. The coexistence has not been diagno

A Japanese patient with Teebi hypertelorism syndrome and a novel CDH11 EC1 domain variant.

The gene CDH11 encodes cadherin-11, a Type II cadherin superfamily member that contains five extracellular cadherin (EC) domains. Cadherin-11 undergoes trans-dimerization via the EC1 domain to generate cadherin complexes. Compound heterozygous and homozygous loss-of-function CDH11 variants are observed in Elsahy-Waters syndrome (EWS), which shows characteristic craniofacial features, vertebral abnormalities, cutaneous syndactyly in 2-3 digits, genitourinary anomalies, and intellectual disability. Heterozygous CDH11 variants can cause Teebi hypertelorism syndrome (THS), which features widely sp

Surgical Management of Sirenomelia: A Case Study.

BACKGROUND: Sirenomelia is a rare congenital condition characterized by fusion of the lower limbs. Patients with sirenomelia generally do not survive long after birth because the condition is associated with multisystem organ dysfunction due to developmental anomalies. Considering the low incidence and few cases surviving the neonatal period, there is minimal understanding regarding the surgical management of sirenomelia. We present a unique case of an infant born with type 1 sirenomelia, absence of external genitalia, presence of a cloaca, absence of the bladder, and presence of an imperforat

A Recurrent Nonsense Mutation in NECTIN4 Underlying Ectodermal Dysplasia-Syndactyly Syndrome with a Novel Phenotype in a Consanguineous Kashmiri Family.

EDSS1, a syndrome characterized by ectodermal dysplasia-syndactyly, is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner due to mutations in the NECTIN4/PVRL4 gene. Clinical manifestations of the syndrome include defective nail plate, sparse to absent scalp and body hair, spaced teeth with enamel hypoplasia, and bilateral cutaneous syndactyly in the fingers and toes. Here, we report a consanguineous family of Kashmiri origin presenting features of EDSS1. Using whole exome sequencing, we found a recurrent nonsense mutation (NM_030916: c.181C > T, p.(Gln61 ∗)) in the NECTIN4 gene. The variant segregate

Absent meibomian glands and cone dystrophy in ADULT syndrome: identification by whole exome sequencing of pathogenic variants in two causal genes TP63 and CNGB3.

BACKGROUND: Ectrodactyly is a rare congenital limb malformation characterized by a deep median cleft of the hand and/or foot due to the absence of central rays. It could be isolated or depicts a part of diverse syndromic forms. Heterozygous pathogenic variants in the TP63 gene are responsible for at least four rare syndromic human disorders associated with ectrodactyly. Among them, ADULT (Acro-Dermato-Ungual-Lacrimal-Tooth) syndrome is characterized by ectodermal dysplasia, excessive freckling, nail dysplasia, and lacrimal duct obstruction, in addition to ectrodactyly and/or syndactyly. Apert Syndrome - caveats of squint management.

Apert Syndrome (AS) is a rare form of acrocephalosyndactyly. The aim of the manuscript was to underline the challenging squint management in a case of Apert Syndrome. A 1.5-year-old male with craniosynostosis, diagnosed at birth, with history of incomplete closure of eyes, more so in the right eye, and squinting of left eye since birth, was brought to eye OPD by the mother. Presence of acrocephaly, prominent forehead with bony irregularity, chin down with left head tilt, fused cervical vertebrae, marked proptosis, cleft palate, dental anomaly and syndactyly confirmed the diagnosis of AS. Old s

A Family with EEC Syndrome in the Son and ADULT Syndrome in His Father Caused by the c.797G>A (p.Arg266Gln) Pathogenic Variant in the TP63 Gene.

INTRODUCTION: To our knowledge, there are few examples of intrafamilial variability involving two different TP63-linked morphopathies within a same family. Here, we describe a Mexican family in which the son had ectrodactyly, ectodermal dysplasia, and cleft lip/palate syndrome 3 (EEC3), and his father acro-dermato-ungual-lacrimal-tooth (ADULT) syndrome, both heterozygous for the p.Arg266Gln pathogenic variant in TP63. Additionally, we reviewed the clinical information reported for this TP63 genotype. CASE PRESENTATION: The son of this family presented ectodermal defects (thin and sparse hair,

Fractures of the fifth metacarpal neck treated by syndactyly: functional and quality of life outcomes of a series of 39 patients.

The management of the fractures of the fifth metacarpal neck is still debated between surgical, orthopedic, and functional treatments. The main objective of our study was to report the functional results at two, six, and twelve weeks of patients treated with syndactyly for fifteen days for a fracture of the neck of the fifth metacarpal and to determine if these results were compatible with a short-term medical follow-up and if they allowed for a quick return to work. Thirty-nine patients were retrospectively included. Functional results and their variations were analyzed at two, six, and twelv

Bilateral cryptophthalmos with overlapping features of Manitoba oculo-tricho-anal (MOTA) syndrome and Fraser syndrome 2.

A male baby with bilateral cryptophthalmos without eyebrows, distorted anterior hairline, bifid nasal tip, low-set ears, hypertelorism and low anorectal anomaly who was phenotypically diagnosed with Manitoba oculo-tricho-anal syndrome (mutation in FREM1 gene) had an overlapping genotypic diagnosis of autosomal recessive Fraser syndrome 2 because of the presence of a closely related mutation in FREM2 This heterozygous variant was likely to be sporadic. Another mutation was identified in the CEP85L gene indicating lissencephaly 10. This genetic condition has abnormal gyri pattern in the occiput

Thurston syndrome with thalassaemia: a rare case devising a novel molecular and phenotypic variation.

A male infant presented with progressive paleness of the body since 3 months of age. On examination, the child had pallor, microcephaly with dysmorphic facies (depressed nasal bridge, low set ears, retrognathia, high arched palate and tongue hamartoma). Postaxial polydactyly in bilateral hands and feet, broad great toes, with syndactyly of left fourth and fifth toes were present. The haemogram showed severe anaemia with a microcytic hypochromic picture. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was normal. However, the parents' HPLC was suggestive of beta thalassaemia trait. Whole-exome se

Dysfunction of the cardiac parasympathetic system in fatal familial insomnia: a heart rate variability study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Although sympathetic hyperactivity with preserved parasympathetic activity has been extensively recognized in fatal familial insomnia (FFI), the symptoms of parasympathetic nervous system failure observed in some patients are difficult to explain. Using heart rate variability (HRV), this study aimed to discover evidence of parasympathetic dysfunction in patients with FFI and the difference of parasympathetic activity between patients with FFI and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). METHODS: This study enrolled nine patients with FFI, eight patients with CJD and 18 healthy contr

Novel variants identified in CKAP2L in two siblings with Filippi syndrome.

Pathogenic variants in CKAP2L have previously been reported in Filippi syndrome (FS), a rare autosomal recessive, craniodigital syndrome characterized by microcephaly, syndactyly, short stature, intellectual disability, and dysmorphic facial features. To date, fewer than 10 patients with pathogenic variants in CKAP2L associated with FS have been reported. All of the previously reported probands have presumed loss-of-function variants (frameshift, canonical splice site, starting methionine), and all but one have been homozygous for a pathogenic variant. Here we describe two brothers who present
