Urgent right ventricular outflow tract stenting in a dual risks of thrombosis and bleeding in uncorrected adult with cyanotic congenital heart disease: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Uncorrected adults congenital heart disease (ACHD) may present with profound hypoxia and dual risks of thrombosis and bleeding, posing major challenges for definitive surgical repair. In such settings, right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) stenting may provide a life-saving palliative option. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 30-year-old woman with double-outlet right ventricle, subaortic ventricular septal defect, and severe infundibular pulmonary stenosis who suffered cardiac arrest due to profound hypoxia. Her clinical profile was complicated by polycythemia, upper extremity deep

A rare case of multi-segmental lumbar intradural ependymoma: clinical presentation and surgical management: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Intradural extramedullary(IDEM)-type Ependymoma is a rare clinicalentity belonging to the broader category of uncommon glial neoplasms. To date, most published studies have focused predominantly on classic anatomical locations-particularly the filum terminale, whereas the present case arose from an atypical spinal site, highlighting the pronounced anatomical heterogeneity characteristic of this tumor subtype. Moreover, its neuroimaging features demonstrate considerable overlap with those of more common intraspinal tumors, including schwannomas and meningiomas, thereby presenting a

[Case report: Scapular asymmetry caused by congenital unilateral absence of trapezius].

Congenital unilateral absence of trapezius is a rare condition, previously reported in cadaveric specimens. It can cause static shoulder asymmetry and affects the scapular biomechanics and functionality, so complete physical examination of the patient becomes important in order to dimiss or suspect an anomaly. We present a case of a 8 years old boy with asymmetry and scapular winging, who was referred to rehabilitation, suspected facioscapulohumeral dystrophy. An MRI scan of cervical spine and shoulder confirmed the absence of the right trapezius muscle. There were no functional disabilities.

Functionality Assessment of Patients With Cleft Hands.

BACKGROUND: Ectrodactyly, commonly referred to as cleft hand, is a rare pathology characterized by a deficiency and/or complete absence of the central ray in each hand. In order to customize treatment and improve the patient's quality of life, a more detailed functional evaluation is required. Although several studies evaluate functionality in different types of cleft hands, there are only a few studies that show self-reported evaluations. The objective of this study is to assess the hand function of cleft hand patients. METHODS: An observational retrospective study was performed on 12 cleft

Anonychia Congenita - Rare Inheritance of a Rare Disorder.

Non syndromic Anonychia congenita or congenital absence of finger and toe nails is a rare disorder known to occur due to autosomal recessive inheritance of mutation in the R-spondin-4 gene. We present a case of a 32 year old female born of a non-consanguineous marriage presenting with complete absence of finger and toe nails since birth and similar presentation in family members over four generations, suggesting an autosomal dominant inheritance.

Clinical evaluation of the revolutionizing prosthetics modular prosthetic limb system for upper extremity amputees.

Individuals with upper extremity (UE) amputation abandon prostheses due to challenges with significant device weight-particularly among myoelectric prostheses-and limited device dexterity, durability, and reliability among both myoelectric and body-powered prostheses. The Modular Prosthetic Limb (MPL) system couples an advanced UE prosthesis with a pattern recognition paradigm for intuitive, non-invasive prosthetic control. Pattern recognition accuracy and functional assessment-Box & Blocks (BB), Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test (JHFT), and Assessment of Capacity for Myoelectric Control (ACMC)

Asymptomatic unilateral aplasia of the left parotid gland: an unusual entity and case report.

Congenital agenesis of major salivary glands is considered a very infrequent condition and typically appears to be a coincidental finding. It can be present as sporadic case or may be combined with aplasia or hypoplasia of other salivary glands or the lacrimal glands, or as a part of syndromes. Only 23 cases documented in the literature to date, while the youngest patient was 50 days old. Plenty of radiographic useful techniques and treatment is closely related to the clinical manifestations; therefore. We present a case of 52 year old female who was referred to our radiology department for re

Pediatric cervical kyphosis in the MRI era (1984-2008) with long-term follow up: literature review.

OBJECTIVE: Cervical kyphosis is rare in the pediatric population. It may be syndromic or acquired secondary to laminectomy, neoplasia, or trauma. Regardless, this should be avoided to prevent progressive spinal deformity and neurological deficit. Long-term follow-up is needed to evaluate fusion status, spine growth, potential instability, and neurological function. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A retrospective review of 27 children (6 months to 16 years) with cervical kyphotic deformity was performed and limited to the MRI era until 2008, to provide a long-term follow-up after which complex instrume

Application of exome sequencing to diagnose a novel presentation of the Cornelia de Lange syndrome in an Afro-Caribbean family.

BACKGROUND: Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) comprises a recognizable pattern of multiple congenital anomalies caused by variants of the DNA cohesion complex. Affected individuals may display a wide range of phenotypic severity, even within the same family. METHODS: Exome sequencing and confirmatory Sanger sequencing showed the same previously described p.Arg629Ter NIPBL variant in two half-brothers affected with CdLS. Clinical evaluations were obtained in a pro bono genetics clinic. RESULTS: One brother had relatively mild proportionate limb shortening; the other had complete bilateral hyp

An exome sequencing study of Moebius syndrome including atypical cases reveals an individual with CFEOM3A and a TUBB3 mutation.

Moebius syndrome is characterized by congenital unilateral or bilateral facial and abducens nerve palsies (sixth and seventh cranial nerves) causing facial weakness, feeding difficulties, and restricted ocular movements. Abnormalities of the chest wall such as Poland anomaly and variable limb defects are frequently associated with this syndrome. Most cases are isolated; however, rare families with autosomal dominant transmission with incomplete penetrance and variable expressivity have been described. The genetic basis of this condition remains unknown. In a cohort study of nine individuals su

Overlap between Fibular Aplasia, Tibial Campomelia, and Oligosyndactyly and Fuhrmann's Syndromes in an Egyptian Female Infant.

We report a rare congenital limb defect with combined features of both fibular aplasia, tibial campomelia, and oligosyndactyly (FATCO) and Fuhrmann's syndromes. A female newborn infant, born to nonconsanguineous Egyptian parents, presented with isolated abnormalities of the lower limbs comprising bilateral shortening and anterior bowing of the lower limbs at the distal third of the tibia and split foot. Radiographic examination revealed complete absence of both fibulae, anterolateral bowing and shortening of the tibia, bowing of the femora, and absence of several metatarsal and phalangeal bone

Characterization of limb differences in children with Cornelia de Lange Syndrome.

Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) is a well-described multisystem developmental disorder characterized by dysmorphic facial features, growth and behavioral deficits, and cardiac, gastrointestinal, and limb anomalies. The limb defects seen in CdLS can be mild, with small feet or hands only, or can be severe, with variable deficiency defects involving primarily the ulnar structures and ranging from mild hypoplasia of the fifth digit to complete absence of the forearm. Interestingly, the upper limbs are typically much more involved than the lower extremities that generally manifest with small fee

Numerous BAF complex genes are mutated in Coffin-Siris syndrome.

Coffin-Siris syndrome (CSS; OMIM#135900) is a rare congenital anomaly syndrome characterized by intellectual disability, coarse face, hypertrichosis, and absence/hypoplasia of the fifth digits' nails. As the majority of patients are sporadic, an autosomal dominant inheritance model has been postulated. Recently, whole exome sequencing (WES) emerged as a comprehensive analytical method for rare variants. We applied WES on five CSS patients and found two de novo mutations in SMARCB1. SMARCB1 was completely sequenced in 23 CSS patients and the mutations were found in two more patients. As SMARCB1

Complete unilateral right-sided absence of the pectoralis major and serratus anterior muscles in an adult male cadaver of South Indian origin.

The unilateral complete absence of the pectoralis major and serratus anterior muscles in the absence of other anomalies is very rare. The complete absence of the pectoralis major and serratus anterior on the right side was observed during routine dissection of an elderly male cadaver of South Indian origin. Nodularity of the right fifth rib near the fifth costochondral junction was seen. The lateral pectoral and long thoracic nerves were present on the right side. Moderate right-sided disuse atrophy was noted in the pectoralis minor and the rotator cuff muscles due to a shoulder arthrodesis pe

Bilateral radial agenesis with absent thumbs, complex heart defect, short stature, and facial dysmorphism in a patient with pure distal microduplication of 5q35.2-5q35.3.

BACKGROUND: A partial duplication of the distal long arm of chromosome 5 (5q35-->qter) is known to be associated with a distinct phenotype referred to as Hunter-McAlpine syndrome. Clinical spectrum of this disorder mainly consists of mental retardation, microcephaly, short stature, skeletal anomalies, and craniofacial dysmorphism featuring flat facies, micrognathia, large, low-set dysplastic ears, hypertelorism, almond-shaped, down-slanted palpebral fissures, epicanthal folds, small nose, long philtrum, small mouth, and thin upper lip. Less frequent remarkable findings include craniosynostosis

Perspective-taking in blindness: electrophysiological evidence of altered action representations.

It is well established that the mental simulation of actions involves visual and/or somatomotor representations of those imagined actions. To investigate whether the total absence of vision affects the brain activity associated with the retrieval of motor representations, we recorded the readiness potential (RP), a marker of motor preparation preceding the execution, as well as the motor imagery of the right middle-finger extension in the first-person (1P; imagining oneself performing the movement) and in the third-person (3P; imagining the experimenter performing the movement) modes in 19 sig

A specific mutation in the distant sonic hedgehog (SHH) cis-regulator (ZRS) causes Werner mesomelic syndrome (WMS) while complete ZRS duplications underlie Haas type polysyndactyly and preaxial polydactyly (PPD) with or without triphalangeal thumb.

Werner mesomelic syndrome (WMS) is an autosomal dominant disorder with unknown molecular etiology characterized by hypo- or aplasia of the tibiae in addition to the preaxial polydactyly (PPD) of the hands and feet and/or five-fingered hand with absence of thumbs. We show that point mutations of a specific nucleotide within the sonic hedgehog (SHH) regulatory region (ZRS) cause WMS. In a previously unpublished WMS family, we identified the causative G>A transition at position 404 of the ZRS, and in six affected family members of a second WMS family we found a 404G>C mutation of the ZRS. The 404

Sensorimotor tongue representation in individuals with unilateral upper limb amelia.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the impact of the congenital absence of one hand on cortical organization of the sensorimotor cortex (S1/M1). We investigated the tongue representation in S1/M1 in nine participants with normally developed limbs, comprising the control group, and in eight persons with a congenitally completely missing hand (i.e. unilateral hand amelia). All participants were examined by fMRI while performing horizontal tongue movements. The significantly activated clusters covering S1/M1 in both hemispheres were analyzed with respect to the number and intensity o
