Zero echo time MRI for detecting osseous anomalies in neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the additive value of a zero echo time (ZTE) sequence to standard brachial plexus MR neurography (MRN) for detecting and characterizing osseous anomalies in patients with suspected neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome (nTOS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective, case-control study (January 2022-March 2025), unilateral brachial plexus MRN examinations with ZTE and reference imaging (radiographs and/or CT) were included. Two board-certified radiologists determined case status and osseous anomaly subtype (cervical rib, rib synostosis, or elongated C7 transverse pro

Co-Occurring Non-Cardiac Congenital Anomalies Among Cases With Congenital Heart Defects.

Cases with congenital heart defects (CHD) often have other associated anomalies. The aim of this investigation was to assess the prevalence and the types of co-occurring anomalies in CHD in a well-defined population. The anomalies co-occurring with CHD were ascertained in all live births, stillbirths and terminations of pregnancy for fetal anomaly during 29 years in 387,067 consecutive pregnancies of known outcome in the area covered by our population-based registry of congenital anomalies. Of the 4640 cases with CHD ascertained during this period (prevalence of 119.9 per 10,000), 1228 (26.5%)

Genital and urinary tract malformations, associated morbidity, and need for urogenital surgery among children with esophageal atresia: a retrospective cohort study.

PURPOSE: Genital malformations are increasingly recognized when a VACTERL is present, but remain insufficiently described in children with esophageal atresia (EA). This study aimed to determine the prevalence and spectrum of genital and urinary tract malformations in children with EA, and to describe associated morbidity, need for additional surgery, and association with Gross classification. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study including all children undergoing surgery for EA at a tertiary center of pediatric surgery between 2012-2023. Children deceased within five days of birth were excluded

Multiple congenital dermal sinus tracts: a case-based review involving a unique triple-tract configuration that challenges current embryological concepts.

PURPOSE: Congenital dermal sinus tract (DST), a rare spinal dysraphism, typically presents as a solitary midline lesion. Lateral and multiple DSTs are extremely rare, and their embryological basis remains unclear. Here, we report a case of triple DSTs and review the literature on lateral and multiple DSTs to better characterize their clinical and anatomical features. METHODS: A unique case of a 1-month-old infant with triple DSTs (left and right laterals and a midline) at the sacrococcygeal level with intradural convergence, complicated by meningitis and an associated dermoid cyst, is reporte

Squamous cell carcinoma in neglected lumbar myelomeningocele successfully managed by multidisciplinary surgical reconstruction.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) arising within an untreated myelomeningocele (MMC) represents an exceptionally rare but devastating complication of this common neural tube defect, with only 15 cases documented in English literature prior to this report. We present the 16th documented case of SCC in a neglected lumbar MMC and provide a comprehensive critical appraisal of all 15 previously published cases to elucidate epidemiological patterns, treatment heterogeneity, and critical gaps in standardized management protocols. The current case involves a 19-year-old male with a neglected lumbosacral M

MRI in Sheep Model for Myelomeningocele Repair Using a Novel Polymer and Other Dural Patches.

OBJECTIVE: To compare postnatal MRI outcomes after prenatal myelomeningocele repair using three different dural substitutes. METHOD: 32 sheep fetuses were included, with 34.3%(11/32) serving as healthy controls and the remaining undergoing prenatal spinal lumbar defect creation to recreate a myelomeningocele in the fetus. 90.5% (19/21) of sheep fetuses with surgically created MMC underwent repair using traditional collagen (Durapair) patch (n = 6), HUC matrix (NEOX RT) patch (n = 6), or a novel PLA/PCL patch (n = 7). All sheep underwent brain and spine MRI within 24 h after delivery. Images w

A rare presentation of terminal myelocystocele associated with cervical dermal sinus tract: case report and literature review.

PURPOSE: Terminal myelocystocele (TMC) and dermal sinus tract (DST) are uncommon forms of skin-covered spinal dysraphism, each arising from distinct embryological mechanisms. The objective of this report is to present, for the first time in the literature to our knowledge, the clinical features, diagnostic evaluation, surgical management, and detailed imaging description of this uncommon association. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a female neonate with concomitant TMC and DST. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a trumpet-shaped TMC associated with sacral osseous dysraphism and

Modified Pectus Up and the Portuguese Case Series.

INTRODUCTION: Pectus excavatum (PE) is the most common congenital chest wall deformity, with an incidence of 1 in 400 births. Surgical approaches vary depending on the severity of the condition. Recently, the taulinoplasty approach - "Pectus Up®" - was described as an alternative to lift the sternum through external traction, avoiding invading the mediastinum or pleural cavity. We describe our progressively modified taulinoplasty technique and case series. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 2022 to 2024, 13 consecutive patients with pectus excavatum underwent surgical correction with a modified taul

Radiographic tracheal comparison among American, English, and French bulldogs via the utilization of manubrium and thoracic inlet tracheal indices.

Tracheal hypoplasia is a congenital abnormality associated with brachycephalic airway syndrome, resulting in a generalized decrease in tracheal lumen diameter (TLD). Radiographic techniques to assess tracheal narrowing have been described; however, comparisons of tracheal diameter among breeds of bulldogs have not been made. The objective of this study was to investigate potential differences in standardized tracheal lumen diameters among bulldog breeds at different regions of the trachea and determine whether breed-specific reference values should be established. Medical records and thoracic

Exoscope-Assisted Palatoplasty in Klippel-Feil Syndrome: A Case Report.

Cleft palate (CP) is a congenital malformation that may be associated with cervical vertebral anomalies (CVA), potentially complicating surgical management due to limited neck mobility and consequent reduction in oral cavity exposure and surgical accessibility. We report an exoscope-assisted palatoplasty in a patient with Klippel-Feil syndrome. The patient presented with C4-C6 vertebral fusion and cervical hyperostosis which precluded cervical hyperextension. The use of a three-dimensional (3D) exoscope enabled optimal visualization of the surgical field despite maintenance of a neutral head p

Management of two variants of the OEIS complex (Omphalocele, Exstrophy, Imperforate anus, Spinal defects) : case reports and literature review".

BACKGROUND: There is a wide spectrum of anorectal malformations (ARMs). The majority of ARM types can be diagnosed thorough perineal examination and radiological investigations such as MRI and distal loopogram. The most important aim of ARM repair is keeping the rectum in the muscle complex to protect continence, but still there are important factors that influence continence such as spine anomalies and associated urological anomalies. CASE PRESENTATION: In our report we describe two patients with ARM and abnormal anal sphincteric locations. The first case was a two-year-old female patient who

First Cornelia de Lange Syndrome Type 4 Caused by the Gonadal Mosaicism of RAD21 Deletion.

BACKGROUND: Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) currently has seven known causative genes, inherited in an autosomal or X-linked dominant pattern. Clinical features are variable, including dysmorphic facial features, intrauterine and/or postnatal growth retardation, multiple organ system malformations, and neurodevelopmental disorders. Type 4 of CdLS caused by RAD21 gene has a relatively mild phenotype. METHODS: Here, we report a pair of siblings from a Chinese family who both have similar dysmorphic facial features, cleft palate, spina bifida occulta, and limb phenotypes. Whole-genome sequenci

The serotonin receptor 7 as an emerging target to restore altered neuroplasticity in Angelman syndrome.

The serotonin receptor 7 (5-HT7R) has been indicated as a key modulator of neuronal structure and function, playing critical roles in synaptic plasticity, dendritic spine formation, and cytoskeletal remodeling. 5-HT7R activation promotes neurite outgrowth, enhances long-term potentiation (LTP), stimulates local protein synthesis at synapses, and regulates mitochondrial functions, and the mTOR pathway. These properties make the 5-HT7R a compelling candidate for therapeutic intervention in neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by synaptic dysfunctions. Angelman syndrome (AS) is a severe neu

Rare disease monitoring plans: a case study within a clinical decision support system.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical decision support systems (CDSS) have emerged as valuable tools for enhancing healthcare for rare diseases. Nonetheless, most tools focus on diagnosis, while few support patient monitoring. We aim to report the methods to develop an evidence-based CDSS for monitoring rare diseases, using Bardet-Biedl Syndrome (BBS) as a case study. METHODS: We assembled a multidisciplinary team of over 40 healthcare providers from 11 specialities to develop rare disease monitoring plans. We conducted a scoping review to map the existing literature on BBS monitoring, followed by the syste

An unusual omphalocele: a case report of Cantrell syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Omphalocele is a central abdominal wall defect that can be readily diagnosed at birth. Cantrell syndrome (CS) is an exceedingly rare disorder characterized by abnormalities involving the abdominal wall, sternum, diaphragm, pericardium, and heart, with a poor prognosis. The processes of diagnosis and treatment may pose challenges due to the variable presentation and severity of the condition. Here, we report our experiences in managing a neonate with Cantrell syndrome. CASE PRESENTATION: A female neonate presented with an abdominal mass, initially diagnosed as an omphalocele accomp

Abnormal Enteric Nervous System Organization and Gastrointestinal Motility in Mice With Valproic Acid-Induced Neural Tube Defects.

BACKGROUND: Neural tube defects (NTDs) are a common congenital birth anomaly that can occur at either cranial levels, resulting in anencephaly, or spinal levels, resulting in spina bifida. Neurogenic bowel is a major cause of morbidity in patients affected by spina bifida, but it is unknown whether the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is affected in other types of NTDs. An absolute requirement for GI motility is the enteric nervous system (ENS) located within the walls of the GI tract. Enteric neurons coalesce into circumferential stripes throughout embryonic, fetal, and early postnatal development
