Ellis-van Creveld (EVC) syndrome is a form of skeletal and chondroectodermal dysplasia, occurring with and without systemic involvement. Taurodontism of permanent and primary molars and upper posterior supernumerary teeth are rarely associated with this syndrome. A 5-year-old girl presented with early childhood caries and hypodontia. She had labiogingival adhesion, labiogingival frenulum hypertrophy, accessory labiogingival frenula, and a serrated appearance of the gingiva. She was also short in stature. All major features of chondroectodermal dysplasia were present. EVC syndrome requires mult

Ellis-van Creveld syndrome is a rare type of developmental chondroectodermal dysplasia. We report the case of a 32-year-old woman with this syndrome who was scheduled for cesarean section. She had no related heart defect. A spinal block was attempted but after confirming that no sensory blockade had been achieved, general anesthesia was administered. Both the operation and the anesthetic procedure were without complications. The clinical manifestations of Ellis-van Creveld syndrome are short-limbed dwarfism, postaxial polydactyly, fingernail dysplasia, cleft palate and lips, and heart defects.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the types and numbers of cases, gestational age at specific prenatal diagnosis and diagnostic accuracy of the diagnosis of skeletal dysplasias in a prenatal population from a single tertiary center.
METHODS: This was a retrospective database review of type, prenatal and definitive postnatal diagnoses and gestational age at specific prenatal diagnosis of all cases of skeletal dysplasias from a mixed referral and screening population between 1985 and 2007. Prenatal diagnoses were grouped into 'correct ultrasound diagnosis' (complete concordance with postnatal pediatric or p

Ellis-van Creveld syndrome (EVC) or chondroectodermal dysplasia is a rare autosomal recessive disorder. It is a tetrad of chondrodysplasia, ectodermal dysplasia, polydactyly, and congenital heart disease. In several case reports, dysplasia involving other organs has also been identified. The exact prevalence is unknown, but the syndrome seems more common among the Amish community. Many Indian cases have also been reported. This report describes a classical case of EVC syndrome in a 22 year old woman of Indian origin born of a consanginous marriage. The patient had chondrodysplasia of tubular b

Ellis-van Creveld (EvC) syndrome, or chondroectodermal dysplasia, is a rare genetic disorder associated with chondrodysplasia, ectodermal dysplasia, polydactyly, and congenital cardiac malformations. The disorder is due to an autosomal-recessive mutation mapped to chromosome 4p16. It may occur with different phenotypes. The case of an ovarian endometriotic cyst in a patient suffering from EvC syndrome is reported.

Two male siblings aged 12 and 15 years (Figure 1) presented with growth retardation, limb abnormalities and, defective teeth and nail since childhood. There was no history of similar defects in other family members. On examination their height was 114 cm and 130 cm (expected height; 169 cm and 150 cm) respectively. There were hypoplastic and dystrophic nails, and microdontia and hypodontia on dental examination. There were post-axial polydactyly in both the hands and left foot. Skeletal survey revealed short forearms, legs & distal phalanges (Acromesomelia). Cardiac or other organ system defec

Ellis-van Creveld syndrome (EvC) is a disease complex, where all the three embryonic layers appear to be involved. This disorder is also called as Chondroectodermal dysplasia. EvC is an autosomal recessive disorder resulting from mutations in these patients. Mutations in the two genes EVC and EVC2, have been identified to cause the condition. It has been considered as a skeletal dysplasia with an incidence of approximately 1 out of 1,50,000 live births. A high prevalence has been reported among certain populations like Amish and Arabs of Gaza strip. There are more than 300 cases of EvC reporte

Ellis-van Creveld (EVC) syndrome or chondroectodermal dysplasia is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterised by a variable spectrum of clinical findings. Classical EVC syndrome comprises a tetrad of clinical manifestations of chondrodystrophy, polydactyly, ectodermal dysplasia, and cardiac defects. It is extremely rare for EVC syndrome to occur in one of a pair of newborn twins. Review of the existing literature revealed that only one such case has been reported so far.

Chondroectodermal dysplasia is a rare mesenchymal - ectodermal dysplasia first described in 1940 by Richard W.B. Ellis and Simon van Creveld now known as Ellis van Creveld syndrome. It is also known as Mesvectodermal dysplasia. Majority of cases were characteristically seen in one particular inbred population from the Amish community of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. The syndrome manifests with several skeletal anomalies, oral mucosal and dental anomalies, congenital cardiac defects and nail dysplasia. Ellis van Creveld syndrome may be differentiated from other chondrodystrophies like

EVC is a novel protein mutated in the human chondroectodermal dysplasia Ellis-van Creveld syndrome (EvC; OMIM: 225500). We have inactivated Evc in the mouse and show that Evc(-/-) mice develop an EvC-like syndrome, including short ribs, short limbs and dental abnormalities. lacZ driven by the Evc promoter revealed that Evc is expressed in the developing bones and the orofacial region. Antibodies developed against Evc locate the protein at the base of the primary cilium. The growth plate of Evc(-/-) mice shows delayed bone collar formation and advanced maturation of chondrocytes. Increased nuchal translucency thickness (NT) is an established sonographic marker of fetal chromosomal abnormality. Several structural fetal defects and genetic syndromes including a range of skeletal dysplasias have been reported in association with increased NT. We report the first case of fetal Ellis-Van Creveld syndrome presenting as raised fetal NT at 13 weeks' gestation. Ultrasonography at 18 weeks' gestation demonstrated a narrow thorax, marked shortening of the long bones with bowed femora and hexadactyly of hands and feet. Pregnancy was terminated at 23 weeks' gestation. The postmorte

Ellis-van Creveld (EVC) syndrome (chondroectodermal dysplasia, mesoectodermal dysplasia, OMIM 225500) is an autosomal recessive skeletal dysplasia characterized by short limbs, short ribs, postaxial polydactyly and dysplastic nails and teeth. Oral manifestations tend to be pathognomonic such as multiple broad labial frenula and congenital missing teeth. In this study we report three Egyptian families with six cases of EVC syndrome. An unusual pattern of inheritance with father to son or to daughter transmission was observed in 2 consanguineous families thus demonstrating pseudo-dominant inheri

Ellis van Creveld Syndrome (EVCs) is a chondroectodermal dysplasia. Its clinical picture includes a meso-acromielic limb dwarfism with normal spine, involvement of the teeth, hair and nails, polydactyly of the hands and feet and heart malformations. Ultrasonography compared with histology were used in the present study to evaluate neo-natal ultrasonographic hip development and acetabular hysto-morphology in EVCs. A flat and abnormal acetabulum with small beta angles and non measurable alfa angles were detected at repeated ultrasonographic evaluations at birth and at four months, with irregular

Ellis-van Creveld syndrome, or chondroectodermal dysplasia, is an autosomal recessive disorder with characteristic clinical manifestations. Its incidence in the general population is low. The oral manifestations of Ellis-van Creveld are found in soft tissues and teeth, but the dental literature on the subject is scarce. In the last 20 years, 5 cases of Ellis-van Creveld syndrome have been followed at the Pediatric Dentistry Service of the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, Barcelona. The present study describes the constant and variable oral findings in these patients, which play an important role in

BACKGROUND: Allograft kidney transplantation has become a treatment of choice for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), and post-transplant diabetes mellitus (PTDM) has been associated with impaired patient and graft survival. Taiwan has the highest incidence and prevalence rates of ESRD with many recipients and candidates of kidney transplantation. However, information about the epidemiologic features of PTDM in Taiwan is incomplete. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the prevalence and incidence of PTDM with subsequent patient and graft outcomes.
METHODS: Using the Taiwan National H

Chondroectodermal dysplasia (Ellis-van Creveld syndrome) is an autosomal recessive condition characterized by short-limb dwarfism, postaxial polydactyly, ectodermal defects, and congenital heart disease. This condition is most prevalent in the Amish population of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA, occurring in 1/5000 births and in 1/60,000 births in the general population. This report presents a case of ultrasonographic detection of chondroectodermal dysplasia at 12 weeks of gestation.
