Prenatal Fetoscopic Intervention for Gastroschisis: A Systematic Review of First Published Human Cases.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically identify and descriptively summarize the available published human evidence on prenatal fetoscopic intervention for gastroschisis, focusing on reported procedural characteristics, maternal-fetal events, neonatal outcomes, and limitations of the current literature. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA guidance, with protocol registration in PROSPERO (CRD420261338353). MEDLINE/PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, CENTRAL, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched from inception to March 2026. Studies including fetuses with prenatally diagnosed gastroschi

Effects of Gastroschisis Reduction on Pulmonary Function.

AIM: Neonates who have gastroschisis may be at risk of a deterioration in their pulmonary function as the lesion is reduced. Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) is a non-invasive tool that can be used to examine respiratory function. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of bowel reduction in gastroschisis on respiratory function. We hypothesized that as the gastroschisis was reduced, End-Expiratory Lung Impedance (EELI) would also be reduced. METHODS: A Sentec LuMon EIT monitor was used to measure End-Expiratory Lung Impedance (EELI) pre and post bowel reduction. RESULTS: Eight

Clinical characteristics and surgical outcomes of full-thickness abdominal wall injuries complicated by evisceration and fistulation in dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius).

BACKGROUND: Abdominal wall injuries in dromedary camels often result in life-threatening evisceration or persistent fistulation. While well documented in equines and bovines, standardized surgical management protocols and survival outcomes for camelids remain scarce in veterinary literature. This retrospective study evaluated the clinical patterns, visceral involvement, surgical treatments, and survival outcomes of full-thickness abdominal wall injuries complicated by evisceration or fistulation in dromedary camels. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 14 dromedary camels presentin

Changes in birth certificate-reported prevalence of congenital anomalies at live birth during the COVID-19 pandemic: a nationwide study of 26 million United States live births.

BACKGROUND: Although the majority of studies have indicated that maternal severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination are not associated with neonatal birth defects, it is relevant to examine whether the disease burden changed during the COVID-19 pandemic, as other influencing factors may have also changed. We aimed to compare the birth certificate-reported prevalence of congenital anomalies at live birth before and during the pandemic. METHODS: Using public birth data, all live births from 2016 to 2022 in the Unit

Ultrasonic Suggestive Findings of Complex Congenital Heart Diseases in Highly Selected High-Risk Fetuses During Mid-First Trimester: A Summary of Six Cases.

OBJECTIVE: To explore whether ultrasound can identify findings suggestive of fetal complex congenital heart disease in highly selected high-risk fetuses during the mid-first trimester. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 23 highly selected high-risk fetuses who related to CHD that underwent ultrasound examinations in our department between March 2015 and March 2025. Standardized scanning included mid-sagittal view, transverse views of the head, upper limbs, abdomen, lower limbs, thorax, and cardiac were obtained. A transverse scan of the cardiac was performed to obtain the colo

Mortality, Bowel Preservation, and Surgical Strategy in Closing and Closed Gastroschisis: A Systematic Review and Individual Participant Data Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Closing and closed gastroschisis represent the most severe end of the gastroschisis spectrum, carrying high mortality and risk for short bowel syndrome (SBS). No individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis exists, and the choice for opting an optimal surgical strategy, intracorporeal parking versus primary resection, is unresolved. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library (inception to June 2026) for studies reporting patient-level data on closing, closed, or vanishing gastroschisis, following the PRISMA-IPD guidelines. Individual data were

Gastroschisis-Like Defect in a Crossbred Bovine Calf: Anatomical, Clinical and Surgical Perspectives.

Congenital abdominal wall defects with evisceration are relatively uncommon in bovine neonates. This report describes a gastroschisis-like anomaly in a one-day-old female crossbred calf, suspected to result from the prenatal rupture of an omphalocele. The condition was characterised by evisceration of the pyloric abomasum and a portion of the small intestine through a ventral abdominal wall defect (involving the umbilical ring) without a protective sac. Clinically, the calf presented with generalised weakness, lateral recumbency and an inability to suckle. Physical examination revealed hypothe

Structural birth defects and exposure to oil and gas wells during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to unconventional hydraulically fractured oil and gas wells during pregnancy is associated with a higher risk of structural birth defects. These associations have not been examined in California, where most operators use conventional methods that do not use enhanced techniques. OBJECTIVES: Determine whether residing near oil and gas wells during early pregnancy was associated with birth defect risks among San Joaquin Valley, California, residents. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study with data from the California Center of the National Birth Defects Prevention Stud

Food and Drug Administration Expert Panel on Infant Formula "Operation Stork Speed" June 2025: Part 1, Nutrient Considerations.

Operation Stork Speed, launched by the Food and Drug Administration in March 2025, represents a comprehensive initiative to update infant formula regulations that have remained largely unchanged since the 1980s. This expert panel review addresses recommendations for nutrients considering 4 decades of accumulated scientific evidence. Current Food and Drug Administration fatty acid regulations specify only total fat content and minimum linoleic acid requirements, despite substantial international consensus on polyunsaturated fatty acid specifications. Evidence strongly supports establishing maxi

Food and Drug Administration Expert Panel on Infant Formula "Operation Stork Speed" June 2025: Part 3, Marketing of Infant Formulas, Breastfeeding Support, Hypoallergenic Formulas, and Nutrition for Preterm Infants.

The United States formula industry uses aggressive marketing strategies that exploit parental anxieties, undermine breastfeeding, and violate ethical international standards, all of which contribute to early formula introduction and disparities in breastfeeding. In addition, misleading or complex labeling contributes to caregiver and provider confusion regarding the content of formulas. A centralized, Food and Drug Administration-maintained database of infant formulas could support caregivers and healthcare professionals in countering misinformation and making evidence-based decisions. Food and Drug Administration Expert Panel on Infant Formula "Operation Stork Speed" June 2025: Part 2, Regulatory and Safety Considerations.

Operation Stork Speed was launched to modernize infant formula oversight after 2022 shortages and other evidence of supply chain and safety issues. Current Food and Drug Administration (FDA) processes to regulate formulas are at times slow and complex, making it difficult for new formulas to enter the market. One key pathway to adding bioactive substances or other compounds to infant formula is via the generally recognized as safe (GRAS) route. GRAS and food additive pathways require safety data, but food additive petitions require more safety information and cannot be marketed until FDA appro

Gastroschisis: Is the Combination of Diagnosis and Procedure Code Sufficient for Case-Confirmation?

INTRODUCTION: Timely, accurate reporting is essential for population-based surveillance of birth defects. Searching specific diagnosis codes in hospital discharge data is standard practice for identifying potential cases; however, it lacks the confidence obtained through chart review for case confirmation. While inarguably valuable, case confirmation is time-consuming. This study aimed to assess the value of diagnosis and procedure codes for case confirmation using various combinations of ICD-10-CM/PCS codes (henceforth termed ICD-10). METHODS: For birth years 2021 and 2022, Arizona used two

Is 24 hours enough? Evaluating prophylactic antibiotic duration after abdominal wall closure in neonatal gastroschisis.

BACKGROUND: While the current American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA) recommendation is to discontinue prophylactic antibiotics 24 h after abdominal wall closure in otherwise healthy gastroschisis patients managed with a silo, the evidence supporting this recommendation is limited. We aimed to determine if at our center the odds of infection in cases who received prophylactic antibiotics only up to 24 h after closure was greater than cases who received longer courses of antibiotics. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of neonates with gastroschisis managed with a silo at a ter

Embryologic and Developmental Origins of Gastroschisis: A Scoping Review of Historical and Contemporary Theories.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Gastroschisis remains one of the most debated congenital abdominal wall defects with respect to its embryologic and developmental origins. Despite decades of investigation, no consensus exists regarding a single causative mechanism, and competing hypotheses variably explain laterality, bowel injury, and closing variants. This scoping review aims to synthesize historical and contemporary embryologic theories of gastroschisis and integrate them into a coherent developmental framework with direct relevance to prenatal assessment and clinical interpretation. METHODS: A stru

A Pilot Study to Advance Task-Sharing of Gastroschisis Management in Uganda.

Introduction: Gastroschisis mortality in Africa is high partly due to delays in care. In Uganda, skilled birth attendants (SBAs) are the first point-of-contact for most babies, and with proper training, may be willing to participate in surgical task-sharing. Objective: Empower Ugandan skilled birth attendants with the knowledge and practical skills needed to care for babies with gastroschisis. Methods: Ugandan SBAs completed a one-day gastroschisis course, and resident physicians also requested to participate. A pre- and post-course test was administered to assess gastroschisis knowledge and c
