Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) is an imprinting disorder associating macroglossia, abdominal wall defects, visceromegaly, and a high risk of childhood tumor. Molecular anomalies are mostly epigenetic; however, mutations of CDKN1C are implicated in 8% of cases, including both sporadic and familial forms. We aimed to describe the phenotype of BWS patients with CDKN1C mutations and develop a functional test for CDKN1C mutations. For each propositus, we sequenced the three exons and intron-exon boundaries of CDKN1C in patients presenting a BWS phenotype, including abdominal wall defects, withou

OBJECTIVE: Penile agenesis is a rare congenital abnormality with an incidence of 1 in 30 million births. We want to demonstrate in this video a new technique of neophalloplasty based on two transverse skin flaps from lower abdominal wall.
METHODS: The patient was placed into a prone position; the urethral meatus was found inside the rectum, 2 cm from the anal border. An Anterior Sagittal Transrectal Approach (ASTRA) approach was performed; the urethra was isolated and repositioned as a perineal urethrostomy. We created the neophallus based on two flaps, each measuring 7 × 3 cm. After incision

Limb body wall complex (LBWC) is characterized by multiple severe congenital malformations including an abdominal and/or thoracic wall defect covered by amnion, a short or absent umbilical cord with the placenta almost attached to the anterior fetal wall, intestinal malrotation, scoliosis, and lower extremity anomalies. There is no consensus about the etiology of LBWC and many cases with abnormal facial cleft do not meet the requirements for the true complex. We describe a series of four patients with LBWC and other malformations in an attempt to explain their etiology. There are several repor

UNLABELLED: Soft tissue mobilization of pelvic musculature in bladder exstrophy repair and its effect on continence. A single-center experience of 38 exstrophy repairs in children.
INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND: Bladder exstrophy is characterized by infra-umbilical abdominal wall defects, evaginated bladder plate of varying size, epispadias, abnormality of genitalia and bony pelvis. The goal of repair is to provide satisfactory continence, which should preferably be done in specialized centers dedicated to exstrophy management. The concept of functional reconstruction rather than urinary diversion

Spontaneous rupture of the external iliac vein associated with a May-Thurner syndrome is infrequent, particularly in men. We report a case of previously healthy 73-year-old man with a left iliac vein thrombosis, who presented a large lower left abdominal hematoma of sudden-unset. Emergent laparotomy revealed a 3-cm longitudinal tear in the left external iliac vein, which was repaired primarily. Patient's recovery was uneventful. Possible etiological factors have been identified as venous hypertension due to iliac vein thrombosis associated with Cockett syndrome, as well as inflammatory venous

OBJECTIVE: Gastroschisis and omphalocele are the most common fetal abdominal wall defects (AWDs). Ethnic factors have been implicated in the incidence data from some states in the United States. Our aim was to examine ethnic variation in the prevalence of gastroschisis and omphalocele in the US live birth population between 2006 and 2010.
METHODS: AWDs were identified through gastroschisis and omphalocele checkboxes from publicly available US Natality data (2006 to 2010). Ethnicity was evaluated by individual category using National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) definitions. Adjusted mu

Gastroschisis is a common congenital abdominal wall defect. It is almost always diagnosed prenatally thanks to routine maternal serum screening and ultrasound screening programs. In the majority of cases, the condition is isolated (i.e. not associated with chromosomal or other anatomical anomalies). Prenatal diagnosis allows for planning the timing, mode and location of delivery. Controversies persist concerning the optimal antenatal monitoring strategy. Compelling evidence supports elective delivery at 37 weeks' gestation in a tertiary pediatric center. Cesarean section should be reserved fo

BACKGROUND: A recent meta-analysis suggested evidence for an effect of exposure to ambient air pollutants on risk of certain congenital heart defects. However, few studies have investigated the effects of traffic-related air pollutants with sufficient spatial accuracy.
OBJECTIVES: We estimated associations between congenital anomalies and exposure to traffic-related air pollution in Barcelona, Spain.
METHOD: Cases with nonchromosomal anomalies (n = 2,247) and controls (n = 2,991) were selected from the Barcelona congenital anomaly register during 1994-2006. Land use regression models from th

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review prognostic parameters reported recently in the evaluation of abdominal wall defects in the first trimester.
RECENT FINDINGS: Evaluation of abdominal wall defects in the first trimester is based principally on associated structural or chromosomal anomalies. In the case of gastroschisis, which is rarely associated with other anomalies, evaluation of prenatal or postnatal outcome is based mainly on the course of pregnancy. In the case of isolated omphalocele in the first trimester, recent studies have evaluated parameters that could help predict prenatal or postnatal

Various diseases of pigmentation in the newborn are known, such as congenital or acquired linear hyperpigmentation. Pigmentary lines of the newborn are counted among the transient benign cutaneous lesions in the newborn and appear to be rather rare. This paper reports on a newborn with pigmentary lines in the creases of the abdomen. The 5-month-old boy is the first case observed so far in the University Hospital of Basel in Switzerland. He was born at term and healthy, without any congenital abnormalities. The horizontally arranged linear hyperpigmentation appeared shortly after birth and fade

Body stalk anomaly is a rare malformation. This anomaly in monozygotic twins is extremely unusual. We describe a case of monoamniotic pregnancy discordant for body stalk anomaly diagnosed at 11 weeks. Ultrasound showed a fetus with a large anterior abdominal wall defect, anomaly of the spine and no evidence of lower extremities and other with a normal morphology. As far as our concern, only three monoamniotic pregnancies discordant for this malformation were reported. Our case represents the fourth reported monoamniotic pregnancy discordant for body stalk anomaly with diagnosis made by ultraso

Congenital hernia of the umbilical cord (CHUC) is a rare congenital entity compared to more common post-natally occurring umbilical hernia. Although recognized as a distinct entity since 1920s, CHUC is often misdiagnosed as a small omphalocele, resulting in its underreporting. We present the first case report of CHUC associated with extracelomic colonic atresia, complicated by perinatal perforation in a newborn. We also discuss the differentiating features from other anterior abdominal wall defects such as omphalocele and gastroschisis including its embryogenesis.

Herein, we report a 26-year-old patient with lymphangiomatosis of the spleen associated with multiple lymphatic and venous malformations. This patient underwent excision of a large lymphatic malformation of the left abdominal wall during childhood. A venous malformation of her left lower limb was excised during adolescence. Additional lymphatic malformations were found in the soft tissue of her left thigh at the age of 20. During hospitalization for a huge vulvar hemangioma at the age of 26, she was incidentally found to have asymptomatic splenomegaly, for which she underwent splenectomy. Exam

BACKGROUND: Gastroschisis and omphalocele are the most common anterior abdominal wall defects affecting infants. There are few large cohort studies describing the frequency of associated anomalies in infants with these 2 conditions. We describe associated anomalies and outcomes in infants with these defects using a large, multi-center clinical database.
METHODS: We identified all infants with gastroschisis or omphalocele from a prospectively collected database of infants discharged from 348 neonatal intensive care units in North America from 1997 to 2012. Maternal and patient demographic data

Limb body wall complex (LBWC) is a rare polymalformative syndrome. The majority of cases presented in the literature have been diagnosed in the second or third trimester of pregnancy. The authors present a case of LBWC diagnosed in the first trimester of pregnancy. The combination of two- and three-dimensional ultrasounds proved to be useful for establishing the diagnosis and differentiating from other abdominal wall defects. The diagnosis was followed by therapeutic abortion at 14 weeks' gestation, and the pathological report confirmed the diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Dermatan sulfate (DS) is a highly sulfated polysaccharide with a variety of biological functions in extracellular matrix organization and processes such as tumorigenesis and wound healing. A distinct feature of DS is the presence of iduronic acid, produced by the two enzymes, DS-epimerase 1 and 2, which are encoded by Dse and Dsel, respectively.
METHODS: We have previously shown that Dse knockout (KO) mice in a mixed C57BL/6-129/SvJ background have an altered collagen matrix structure in skin. In the current work we studied Dse KO mice in a pure NFR genetic background.

We report a neonate with prenatal ultrasound imaging features suggestive of CLOVES syndrome, confirmed postnatally by clinical and imaging findings of the constellation of truncal overgrowth, cutaneous capillary malformations, lymphatic and musculoskeletal anomalies. The clinical, radiological and histopathological findings noted in our patient help differentiate from other overgrowth syndromes such as Proteus syndrome. We report perinatal findings and add new clinical findings of this rare syndrome.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a hereditary disease of exocrine gland function that involves multiple systems but chiefly results in chronic respiratory infections, the major cause of death, pancreatic enzyme deficiency and severe malnutrition, mostly in untreated patients. The association between CF and other inherited diseases or congenital anomalies is rare. We describe for the first time the association of CF and Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS). BWS is a genetic disorder commonly characterized by overgrowth. The most common features of BWS include macrosomia, macroglossia, abdominal wall defect

Pentalogy of Cantrell (PC) is a rare congenital anomaly involving defects in the anterior diaphragm, supraumbilical abdominal wall, diaphragmatic pericardium, and lower sternum, and other congenital intracardiac abnormalities. Here, we report the case of a newborn infant who was born at 32 weeks of gestation and had all 5 features of PC, in addition to absent kidneys and a deformed left hand. Medical intervention would not be able to save the patient, so we allowed her to die in peace. We discuss here the etiology, prenatal diagnosis, and severity of and the mortality associated with this cond

PURPOSE: Patients with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS), a genetic disorder characterized by macroglossia, abdominal wall malformations, and gigantism, are at risk for sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). SDB is defined by abnormal breathing that is exacerbated during sleep and is a spectrum ranging from apnea of prematurity to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of SDB in children with BWS, and to document clinical characteristics and method(s) of treatment.
METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of children with BWS seen at Boston Childre
