PURPOSE: Wormian bones (WB) are accessory ossicles that develop within cranial sutures. While typically benign, their presence in large numbers has been associated with various genetic and developmental disorders. This study aims to characterize the prevalence, anatomical distribution, and clinical associations of WB in a pediatric population undergoing cranial CT imaging.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt. Pediatric patients aged 0 to 18 years who underwent cranial CT imaging for any clinical indication were included. WB were

Adult, symptomatic Chiari malformation Type I (CMI) is a painful, often debilitating, neurological condition which is defined by the herniation, or extension, of the cerebellar tonsils below the skull. Research has shown that Chiari patients on average exhibit a number of anatomical variations, or morphometric differences, from healthy controls in the cranio-vertebral region; however the potential contribution of these differences to CMI's pathophysiology is not clear. This case-control study looked at nine representative morphometric measures (MM) in 432 adult, female CMI subjects and 148 adu

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies are among the common health problems faced by children in low- and middle-income countries, contributing substantially to infant mortality rates. Due to limited access to newborn screening programmes in most of the resource-limited settings, many congenital anomalies go undiagnosed and untreated, leading to adverse outcomes. This study aimed to develop and validate a newborn screening tool for congenital anomalies for use in resource-limited settings.
METHODS: A Delphi approach was used to assemble a group of experts and develop the screening tool. Tool valida

Approximately 50% of patients that undergo surgical reconstruction to repair the congenital heart defect tetralogy of Fallot (ToF) experience adverse effects by the age of 50. These effects can be linked to the poor healing response elicited by the synthetic materials in the commonly used cardiovascular patches. Extracellular matrix (ECM) biomaterial-based therapies, on the other hand, have been shown to elicit positive healing responses in various tissues and pathologies, including those in the heart. Few studies, however, have been directed towards the development of an ECM-based cardiovascu

BACKGROUND: Sprengel's deformity is a rare congenital anomaly of the scapula, characterized by an elevated position, inferior tilting of the glenoid, and hypoplasia. Due to limited data on the impact of this congenital anomaly, the purpose of this study is to objectively characterize the initial clinical presentation and quantify both the range of motion and patient-reported function in children with Sprengel's deformity.
METHODS: Children with Sprengel's deformity were prospectively enrolled into the multicenter Congenital Upper Limb Differences (CoULD) Registry between 2014 and 2023. Should

Although congenital variations of the biceps brachii are relatively common, agenesis of the long head is exceedingly rare. Due to the absence of clinical symptoms and notable physical examination findings, its diagnosis is challenging. The absence of the long head repre-sents one such variant, although it has only rarely been reported in arthroscopic and imaging studies. As this anomaly does not result in functional impairment, congenital biceps agenesis is often incidentally detected on shoulder magnetic resonance imaging performed for other reasons. In this case report, we present a 42-year-

A bifid cardiac apex is a rare congenital anomaly resulting from the nonunion of the right and left ventricles at the cardiac apex, producing two distinct apical projections with a cleft between them. This article illustrates two cases with a bifid apex: the first with a deep cleft and the other with an apparently superficial indentation. Dissection of the heart confirmed separation of the myocardium of both ventricles at the apex. Both cases were free of other congenital anomalies, and the cause of death was unrelated to the bifid apex. We also present a case of a prominent apical notch that

CASE: An otherwise healthy 10-year-old boy presented with severe bilateral shoulder dysfunction because of lateral scapular winging. He underwent bilateral modified Eden-Lange tendon transfers, resulting in near-normal restoration of shoulder range of motion at the 1-year follow-up. Intraoperatively, he was found to have bilateral absent trapezial muscles and an anomalous scapuloclavicular muscle spanning from the superomedial scapula to the posterolateral clavicle.
CONCLUSION: This case represents the only known report of bilateral absent trapezius muscles without involvement of other trunk

Down syndrome (DS) is caused by the triplication of human chromosome 21 (Hsa21), resulting in skeletal insufficiency (low bone mineral density) and altered bone development. DS mouse models recapitulate these deficits, including sexual dimorphism in long bone alterations. Historically, Ts65Dn mice provided much of the insight behind DS-related skeletal deficits with ∼100 trisomic orthologous genes, but there are concerns about the genetic fidelity in this model due to the included triplication of genes not homologous to Hsa21. A new DS model, Ts66Yah, subtracted the non-Hsa21 homologous trisom

OBJECTIVE: To propose a morphologic-phenotypic stratification and investigate the radiological characteristics for the patients with anorectal malformation (ARM) associated with congenital spinal deformities.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on ARM patients who had received treatment in the neonatal surgery department of our hospital from January 2008 to December 2022. A total of 86 patients diagnosed with spinal deformities were enrolled, including 49 males and 37 females. We classified the patients included into three groups according to the range vertebral anomalies involving:

Sternal cleft is a rare congenital malformation of anterior chest wall resulting from the failure of mesodermal migration to the midline during early embryological development. It may occur as an isolated anomaly or in connection with other congenital defects, most commonly of the cardiovascular system. The authors report the case of a 6-month-old girl with an upper sternal cleft combined with ventricular and atrial septal defects, who underwent single-stage surgical correction. The cosmetic and functional outcomes of the reconstruction were very good, with a stable anterior chest wall. The ch

BACKGROUND: Cartilaginous acetabular index (CAI) factors in the cartilaginous component of acetabular morphology and may enhance evaluation of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). No studies have established normal CAI values in North American children to date. The purpose of this study was to describe CAI in young patients and to determine the inter- and intrarater reliability of this measurement.
METHODS: Patients aged 6 months to 5 years who underwent pelvic MRI between 2010 and 2025 were included. We excluded patients with bilateral DDH, prior hip surgery, neurological disease, or ot

INTRODUCTION: Concha-type microtia, classified as a milder form of microtia under Nagata's classification, is characterised by the presence of more normal ear subunits compared with other types. The non-expanded auricular reconstruction using autologous rib cartilage is a standard procedure treating conchal microtia, and this operation typically comprises two stages. To maximise the utilisation of native auricular cartilage, the lower half of a patient's ear is preserved as residual ear, which should be connected to the rib cartilage scaffold in this operation. However, it remains unclear whet

Myhre syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by progressive multisystem involvement. Gain-of-function missense heterozygous variants affecting the Ile500 residue and Arg496 residue of the SMAD4 gene are implicated in this condition. In this article, we aim to understand the spectrum of congenital anomalies in Myhre syndrome by studying a cohort of previously unreported patients alongside published literature. Our analysis revealed that the musculoskeletal system was the most common system to be affected, followed by the cardiovascular system. Intrauterine growth restriction was the

Craniofacial development is a highly coordinated and stage-specific process involving neural crest cell migration, proliferation, differentiation, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Genetic mutations, signaling pathway abnormalities, and exposure to environmental teratogens can disrupt normal development. These anomalies can lead to cleft palate, craniosynostosis, and other common congenital craniofacial malformations. Although significant progress has been made in understanding craniofacial development in recent years, the systematic integration of these factors remains limited. Here, we

BACKGROUND: Congenital structural anomalies constitute a major source of pediatric morbidity and surgical burden. However, evidence regarding the spatial epidemiology of congenital structural anomalies and their area-level environmental context remains limited, particularly in geographically and socioeconomically heterogeneous regions. This study aimed to investigate the spatial heterogeneity of area-level environmental contextual associations with hospital-based congenital anomaly burden.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective hospital-based study including pediatric inpatients with congenita

BACKGROUND: Pain and fever are common in early pregnancy, yet their management poses a major clinical dilemma. Although not confirmed, recent studies have raised safety concerns regarding acetaminophen. Evidence on the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) in the first trimester remains inconclusive. This uncertainty has left clinicians with limited evidence to guide treatment decisions. This study evaluated the association between first-trimester NSAID exposure and the risk of major congenital malformations (MCMs) in a large, population-based cohort of pregnancies.

STUDY QUESTION: Does extended embryo culture (EEC) associate with an increased risk of obstetrical, perinatal, or children's health complications?
SUMMARY ANSWER: After thorough adjustment, EEC was not associated with widespread increased risks, although a moderate excess risk persisted for a few specific outcomes, notably cardiac anomalies, whereas reduced risks were observed for gestational diabetes, small birthweight, and musculoskeletal-limb anomalies.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: EEC is increasingly used in IVF cycles. While blastocyst transfer (day-5/6) often improves birth rates, concerns r
