Disseminated cystic echinococcosis presenting as orbital swelling in a child - case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a parasitic disease that commonly affects the liver and lungs. Orbital involvement is an unusual presentation, particularly in non-endemic areas, and poses diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. CASE PRESENTATION AND LITERATURE REVIEW: We report the case of a five-year-old girl from Syria who presented with orbital swelling and was ultimately diagnosed with disseminated CE. The diagnosis was delayed, and management was complicated by intraoperative cyst rupture and spillage. Surgical resection combined with antiparasitic therapy resulted in regression

Recurrent pelvic osseous hydatid disease: a case report and review of management challenges.

BACKGROUND: Hydatid disease is a parasitic infection caused by Echinococcus species, most commonly affecting the liver and lungs. Skeletal involvement is rare, accounting for only 0.5%-4% of cases, with pelvic bone hydatidosis being exceptionally uncommon. Its indolent progression, nonspecific radiological features, and high recurrence rate make diagnosis and management particularly challenging. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 38-year-old male butcher from a rural region who presented with chronic left hip pain. Imaging studies revealed multiple cystic lesions involving the left il

Coexisting Waldenström Macroglobulinaemia and Alveolar Echinococcosis Presenting with Chylothorax that Resolved on Treatment: A Diagnostic and Therapeutic Challenge.

INTRODUCTION: Waldenström macroglobulinaemia is a lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma producing monoclonal immunoglobulin M (IgM), and both the disease and its treatment can cause immunosuppression. Alveolar echinococcosis is a parasitic infection that primarily involves the liver but may present with extrahepatic manifestations. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a patient who presented with chylothorax and non-specific hepatic lesions and was then diagnosed with Waldenström macroglobulinaemia. In addition to this diagnosis, alveolar echinococcosis was subsequently confirmed by liver biopsy and

[Cerebral Echinococcosis].

Cerebral echinococcosis is a potentially fatal central nervous system infection caused by Echinococcus tapeworms, such as E. multilocularis and E. granulosus. It often metastasizes from lesions in other organs, including the liver, and rarely occurs primarily in the brain. Differentiation from malignant tumors is frequently difficult, and diagnosis is challenging unless cerebral echinococcosis is suspected. Surgical resection is the primary treatment, and for cases in which resection is difficult, chemotherapy with benzimidazole-based antiparasitic drugs is used; however, the therapeutic effec

A multicenter hospital-based analysis of cystic Echinococcosis in Afghanistan: Filling a National data gap.

BACKGROUND: Cystic Echinococcosis (CE), a neglected zoonotic disease caused by Echinococcus granulosus, is highly endemic in Afghanistan due to livestock-dependent livelihoods, poor sanitation, limited healthcare access, and unregulated animal practices. Despite its substantial morbidity and economic burden, national surveillance and clinical data remain scarce. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe the clinical and demographic characteristics of surgically treated CE patients at five referral hospitals in Kabul, Afghanistan. The objective is to fill the gap of limited national-level data on

Molecular identification and phylogenetic analysis of Echinococcus vogeli Rausch & Bernstein, 1972 from Cuniculus paca Linnaeus, 1766 consumed in extractive reserves in Acre, Brazil.

Hunting wild animals for consumption is a common practice in the Brazilian Amazon and contributes to the transmission of zoonotic diseases, including neotropical echinococcosis (NE), caused by Echinococcus vogeli and Echinococcus oligarthra. Despite the endemicity of E. vogeli in this region, molecular data on its genetic diversity remain limited. This study characterized E. vogeli isolates obtained from lowland pacas (Cuniculus paca) in extractive reserves located in Xapuri and Sena Madureira, Acre, Brazil, using mitochondrial (cox1) and nuclear (p29) markers. All 16 isolates were confirmed a

Iliopsoas hydatid cyst mimicking an ovarian tumor: a diagnostic pitfall in an endemic setting-a case report.

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis is endemic in Ethiopia. Although the liver and lungs are most commonly affected, primary involvement of the iliopsoas muscle is rare and may closely mimic gynecologic pathologies, leading to diagnostic delay or mismanagement. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of an 18-year-old Ethiopian woman who presented with a two-year history of progressively worsening lower abdominal pain and a palpable right lower abdominal mass. Initial ultrasonography suggested a right adnexal cystic lesion. Subsequent computed tomography demonstrated a well-defined cystic mass ad

Prevalence of Liver Cystic Echinococcosis in Türkiye: A Systematic Review of Population-Based Ultrasound Imaging Surveys.

Background: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a chronic zoonotic parasitic disease with a significant impact on public health in endemic regions. The liver is the most frequently affected organ, and ultrasound-based surveys are considered a reliable tool for detecting asymptomatic infections. As population-based data specifically addressing hepatic CE prevalence in Türkiye remain limited, we aimed to assess the prevalence of liver cystic echinococcosis in Türkiye using only ultrasound-based surveys. Methods: A systematic review was conducted, in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines, to estimate t

Metabolomic and proteomic analysis of ghrelin administration in mice infected with Echinococcus granulosus.

Cystic echinococcosis is a zoonotic parasitic disease that induces mechanical compression of liver tissue and subsequent inflammatory responses. ghrelin has protective effects on various liver diseases, including steatosis, chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and apoptosis. However, its role and potential mechanisms in cystic echinococcosis remain unclear. This study used LC-MS-based metabolomics and proteomics to analyze the impact of ghrelin treatment on mice infected with Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato Metabolomic analysis identified 440 metabolites in the ghrelin-treated group. Safe surgical management of two concomitant giant hepatic hydatid cysts: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Hydatid disease (HD) is a parasitic infection caused by the larval stage of the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. The liver is primary affected, accounting for up to 70% of cases, but it can also affect other organs such as the spleen, pelvic cavity, and bones. Patients can remain asymptomatic for 10 to 15 years. This report, accompanied by an extensive literature review, aims to contribute to the understanding of the diagnostic and surgical management of giant hepatic hydatid cysts, given their rarity and the variety of locations in the body where they occur. CASE PRESENTATION: A

Effects of albendazole treatment on sperm parameters of ram experimentally infected with cystic echinococcosis.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a chronic zoonotic disease caused by Echinococcus granulosus, primarily affecting the liver and lungs of livestock but also capable of inducing systemic alterations through oxidative stress and metabolic imbalance. These systemic effects may impair reproductive physiology in male animals. This study aimed to investigate the effects of CE infection and subsequent albendazole (ABZ) treatment on sperm quality parameters in rams. Fourteen male lambs were experimentally infected with E. granulosus eggs, and after the establishment of infection, six were treated orally

Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto hydatid cysts in human and livestock from northeastern Algeria: Molecular characterization based on nad5 and cox1 and fertility assessment.

Cystic Echinococcosis (CE) is a major helminthic zoonosis caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus, particularly highly endemic in several Mediterranean regions, including Algeria. Humans are accidental hosts, while animals such as livestock act as intermediate hosts. This study aimed to update the fragmented epidemiological picture of CE in Algeria, by combining the knowledge on cysts fertility, and protoscolex viability with molecular strains assignment. In particular, the genetic typing of Echinococcus granulosus from humans (n = 16), cattle (n = 15), sheep (n = 15), and goat (

Echinococcus Equinus Found in Imported Donkeys (Equus asinus) From Central Asia.

The zoonotic tapeworm Echinococcus equinus (G4) has been reported primarily in equines across Europe, Africa, and West Asia, but its presence in donkeys in Central Asia had not been documented. This knowledge gap is critical given the substantial and growing Kyrgyzstan-China trade of live donkeys. To assess the transboundary infection and associated risks, we conducted molecular surveillance on 1900 imported donkeys at a port slaughterhouse during November 2023-February 2024. A total of 52 hydatid cysts were collected from 18 infected animals. Protoscoleces were isolated from each cyst and exa

Two cases of typical left ventricular cardiac echinococcosis: a retrospective review with literature synthesis.

Echinococcus granulosus is a cestode parasite responsible for zoonotic hydatid disease. Humans acquire the infection by ingesting water or food contaminated with viable eggs, thereby serving as intermediate hosts. Although the liver and lungs are the organs most frequently involved, cardiac involvement is rare and often clinically silent. The majority of patients seek medical attention due to symptoms of organ compression. At present, the standard management combines surgical removal with perioperative antiparasitic chemotherapy. Here we report two illustrative cases of cardiac echinococcosis
