Behçet's disease (BD) is a rare chronic multisystem inflammatory disorder characterized by recurrent mucocutaneous, ocular, musculoskeletal, and vascular manifestations. Although vascular involvement is common, cardiac manifestations are exceptionally rare and can be life-threatening. We report a unique case of a 24-year-old male who presented with haemoptysis and right-sided chest discomfort. Echocardiography demonstrated multiple right ventricular thrombi, and a CT pulmonary angiogram confirmed extensive thrombi with near-total occlusion of the left pulmonary artery. Despite hemodynamic stab

A woman in her 50s presented with a two-month history of haemoptysis, dyspnea, cough and weight loss. She had recently undergone radiofrequency ablation for atrial fibrillation. A computed tomography (CT) scan of her chest showed left upper lobe opacity, mediastinal lymphadenopathy, and left pleural effusion, concerning for malignancy. Bronchoscopy revealed a malignant-appearing lesion that was negative for malignancy on biopsy. Despite improvement of the CT abnormalities and the lesion on a repeat bronchoscopy, she continued to experience recurrent episodes of dyspnea and haemoptysis. A venti

IntroductionMycotic thoracic aneurysms in children are rare and carry high mortality, particularly when complicated by erosion into adjacent pulmonary structures. Early recognition and surgical intervention are essential to prevent catastrophic outcomes.Case ReportA 14-year-old presented with respiratory symptoms. Imaging revealed a large mycotic aneurysm of the aorta with compression of multiple mediastinal structures. During induction of anaesthesia, aneurysm rupture caused haemoptysis and hypovolemic arrest. Emergent femoral cannulation enabled initiation of cardiopulmonary bypass and novel

INTRODUCTION: Haemoptysis, a common symptom with a variety of aetiologies, requires a comprehensive diagnostic approach. Computed tomography of the thorax (CT) and bronchoscopy are crucial in this process. This study assesses the value of bronchoscopy in patients with haemoptysis and CT with no findings suspicious of malignancy.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: This study retrospectively assessed patients with haemoptysis referred between January 2019 and December 2022 to the Department of Respiratory Medicine, Odense University Hospital. All patients who underwent CT and subsequently bronchoscopy due

Thoracic endometriosis syndrome is a rare form of endometriosis in which endometrial tissue is thought to migrate to the lungs and, with the onset of menstruation, the ectopic foci bleed, causing a range of pulmonary manifestations. In this paper we have collected the clinical data of two patients with thoracic endometriosis syndrome, both of whom presented with haemoptysis as the first symptom and had a history of endometriosis. After 6 courses of treatment with gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogues followed by maintenance treatment with dienogest, the patients' haemoptysis symptoms were r

BACKGROUND: As the utilization of hemocoagulase becomes increasingly prevalent, particularly in patients with hemoptysis, the associated coagulative disorders are attracting the attention of clinicians. The risk factors of hemocoagulase-associated hypofibrinogenemia are still not well understood. Our study evaluated the risk factors of acquired hypofibrinogenemia in hemoptysis patients undergoing systemic treatment with hemocoagulase.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the medical records of hospitalised patients who had received hemocoagulase therapy for hemoptysis. Hypofibrin

Rigid bronchoscopy is a specialised endoscopic modality utilising a rigid scope instrument to afford direct visualisation and intervention within the central airways. In contradistinction to flexible bronchoscopy, the augmented working channel of the rigid instrument permits the introduction of larger-calibre instrumentation, thereby facilitating complex therapeutic procedures. These procedures encompass, inter alia, foreign body retrieval, endoluminal tumour debulking, airway stent deployment, and the management of life-threatening haemoptysis. While the procedure mandates general anaesthesia

Lymphocytic interstitial pneumonia (LIP) is a rare disorder that typically presents with cystic changes on computed tomography. We report a distinctive case of a 53-year-old man with LIP whose sole presenting symptom was haemoptysis. Imaging revealed a solitary spiculated pulmonary nodule, highly suspicious for malignancy. Diagnosis was confirmed by surgical resection and histopathology, which demonstrated characteristic diffuse lymphoplasmacytic infiltration. This case underscores that LIP can masquerade radiologically as lung cancer and must be considered in the differential diagnosis of sol

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital anomalies stemming from the tracheobronchial tree. Often, they are incidental findings, but they can also cause significant symptom burdens such as coughing, haemoptysis, and respiratory distress. Generally, the optimal treatment is surgical excision via lobectomy, but not all patients are suitable for this. Herein, we present the case of an 84-year-old female with a large intrapulmonary bronchogenic cyst who presented with progressive dyspnoea, haemoptysis, and fevers. Due to relative contraindications for surgery, an ultrasound-guided percutaneous inter

INTRODUCTION: Available endobronchial valves (EBVs) for lung volume reduction in severe emphysema are limited in variety and predominantly feature complex metal-silicone designs (e.g., Zephyr®). This study aimed to introduce a novel, all-silicone endobronchial valve (ESV) designed to simplify manufacturing and potentially improve biocompatibility.
METHODS: A preclinical study implanted ESVs or Zephyr® EBVs (1:1) into unilateral caudal lobes of 8 pigs, assessed using computed tomography, bronchoscopy, and necropsy over 6 weeks. A first-in-human (FIH) trial enrolled 3 severe emphysema patients

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic pancreas (HP) is a rare congenital anomaly, characterised by ectopic pancreatic tissue lacking anatomical and vascular continuity with the main pancreas. Its clinical and radiological presentation often mimics gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST), making pre-operative diagnosis challenging. They are usually asymptomatic but can rarely present with symptoms like GI bleed.
METHODS: This retrospective study analysed the four cases of HP in the gastroduodenal region, diagnosed over the past 4 years. All patients underwent minimally invasive surgical excision based on pr

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a complex disease with irregular ventricular response and tachycardia as a result of irregular and rapid contraction of the atria, with poor cardiovascular outcomes unless treated. Beta-blockers are commonly used agents in the treatment of AF. The effects of beta-blockers on bleeding continue to be evaluated.
AIM: Bleeding is a common complication in AF. In current cases, the evaluation of bleeding contributes to the follow-up of the disease. Our study aims to evaluate the effect of beta-blockers on bleeding in patients with AF.
METHOD: The study was c

Bronchial artery-pulmonary artery fistula (BPAF) is an uncommon vascular malformation with a left-to-right shunt. We report a case of a 72-year-old woman diagnosed with BPAF with two arterial feeders who had no underlying lung diseases and presented with intermittent haemoptysis. Her digital subtraction angiography confirmed BPAF supplied by the right bronchial artery (BA) from the intercostobronchial trunk and another ectopic accessory right BA originating from the right subclavian artery. Considering the future risk of catastrophic rupture due to high systemic pressure exerted on the fistula

Haemoptysis arises from diverse respiratory diseases and may involve a broad spectrum of thoracic vessels. Arterial embolisation (AE) is an effective, repeatable, minimally invasive treatment option for life-threatening haemoptysis. This case series included 10 patients (mean age 34 years; six males; five with cystic fibrosis) who underwent 17 AE procedures for life-threatening haemoptysis between January 2018 and September 2025. The study assessed the role of wide-field computed tomography angiography (CTA), extending from the thoracic inlet to L2, in preprocedural planning, bleeding localisa

UNLABELLED: Pulmonary cement embolism is a potentially serious complication following percutaneous vertebroplasty. The risk factors for pulmonary cement embolism have not been clearly identifed. Cement leakage into the azygos vein or in the inferior vena cava has been identifed as a risk factor for pulmonary cement embolism. In addition cement leakage into the paravertebral venous system also seems to be related to pulmonary cement embolism. Here we report a case with detailed preoperative data, intraoperative findings, and imaging evidence to demonstrate the relationship between cement leakag

BACKGROUND: A streamlined referral system for respiratory diseases is essential, and telemedicine offers a viable solution, particularly within the public healthcare sector. There is a paucity of data on the utility of the Vula medical referral application in pulmonology, a field that lends itself to telemedicine.
OBJECTIVES: To perform a 1-year retrospective observational study to assess the Vula medical referral application utility in a tertiary referral centre in Cape Town, South Africa (SA).
METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted at a large tertiary-level hospital located in Cap

We present a case of an adult patient known to have had idiopathic pulmonary haemosiderosis in childhood, which had been quiescent for over 20 years. He presented with the classic triad of haemoptysis, anaemia and radiological pulmonary infiltrates. Bronchoalveolar lavage sample findings showed features of diffuse alveolar haemorrhage with coexisting features of lipoid pneumonia, with the patient reporting a recent occupational exposure to hydrogenated vegetable oil and kerosene. He was treated with oral corticosteroids and made a rapid and full recovery. This is the first reported case the au

A 70-year-old female patient diagnosed with stage IV EGFR-mutant non-small-cell lung cancer experienced three distinct instances of exogenous lipoid pneumonia while undergoing chemotherapy. Chest CT consistently revealed ground-glass opacities with a crazy-paving pattern, and bronchoscopy confirmed the presence of lipid-laden, CD163-positive foamy macrophages. It is noteworthy that each episode was associated with a distinct exogenous exposure: intranasal administration of petroleum jelly, prolonged utilisation of a kerosene heater, and subsequently, intranasal application of Junma Moisturisin

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), a rare systemic vasculitis, typically affects middle-aged adults, with incidence declining significantly in the elderly. Here, we present a rare and exceptional case of new-onset GPA in a 90-year-old female presenting with hemoptysis and characteristic systemic manifestations. Initially investigated for suspected lung malignancy due to her advancing age and history of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (in remission since 2017), the patient was diagnosed with proteinase 3 (PR3) anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-positive vasculitis and characteristic imagin
